Trucky-chan KA-T 620 project

Recommended Posts

I'll be sure to post up MS impressions. Based on the number of cars running successfully on it I'm fairly confident it will do well.  I got the wideband bung welded in last night and I'll be finishing up the install tonight. Once I update the firmware on the MS and decide where to mount the ait I'll hook it up and start playing around in some tables.

It was nice to be able to drive the truck through all of the gears without grinding, nothing like a 14 hour trans swap.

Well, I finally quit being lazy long enough to finish the wideband install. Feel free to ignore the power wire there. I need to do much cable organization under the dash.

At any rate, I have found that at idle and low load/rpm I'm running on the stupid side of lean, higher rpm/load is closer to what it should be. I'm sure this is due in no small part to the placement of the O2 sensor in the number 4 runner of the header rather than the collector since there is clearance issues with the control arm that I didn't notice until it was already installed.  So, I started installing the MS since it will be running off of the wideband and not the stock narrow anyway and found out that the serial cable the PO had included was junk. Oh well, new cable on the way, hoping to have it dialed in by next weekend so I can take it on another short road trip.

I'm beginning to wonder how I ever accomplished anything without a band saw. It is quickly becoming a favorite tool. Not really much of an update on the truck front other than I got around to zipping out some mounting brackets for the ecu.

Band saw front got a little more done as well. Could still use some refinement, but I have a functional stand.

Wow took a porta-band and made it not so porta-bull.

But sure looks like it will work- was it cheaper than just picking up an upright from like harbor freight?

Reroute to under the passenger seat like I did.

Meh, too much work. Already made the bracket and don't feel like stripping the loom back down to reroute it.

I have the same seats, are they out out of a nissan sentra, I cant remember. Truck looks good too.

86ish Escort GT.

Is that a neon console? You fit that up real nice also

Yep Neon, don't remember what year.

back up to my place to help me with this wiring? XD

You aren't done with that yet?  :poke:

Undo two bolts, slip handle back in place, reattach bolts and it's portable again.  Picked up this saw used for half of retail.

As for updates. I got the firmware updated and loaded a start up map, and now I'm not getting a fuel pump signal, so that's cool. I'll have a couple of hours this afternoon to troubleshoot it.

It works out pretty nice.

Got the truck running and started idle tuning last night. It helps to have the connector fully locked into the ecu...

Just because I didn't post it before I'll do it now.

When I was swapping the transmission I took the time to test fit a buddy's spare ram horn style top mount. One nice thing about the KA is that the exhaust flange allows for manifolds to be flipped. In this case it doesn't matter because in the top mount position that this mani was designed to run the turbine housing sits on top of the master cylinder and in the bottom mount configuration as show the compressor housing hits the block. Oh well, now I'm looking into bottom mount T2 flange manifolds and have been keeping an eye out for a dirt cheap used one to test fit before biting the bullet and shelling out actual money for one.

Not much of an update, basically just been driving the truck around and making little tweaks to the tune. Only issue I've run into so far is that the eccs relay is staying on with the key off. From what I've found this could be the result of having the firmware for the wrong module installed. I'll test that theory when I get back to town.

Otherwise, I went ahead and got shadow dash ms, an Android app that integrates with megasquirt to display various configurable dashboards. I've only played around with it a little, but like it and no longer need any gauges other than my phone.

I had already shut off the truck for that screen shot and that is only one of four stock layouts. Each of those dials are configurable to anything ms can measure.

I tried several different module types and even different versions of firmware in hopes of fixing my eccs relay issue, but no luck.  I did however do a bandaid fix by putting a switch on the eccs lss wire.  The switch has the practical upshot of acting as the killswitch I've been meaning to install, but still a bit frustrating.

Took another screen shot of shadow dash while I was out driving around. I've found that my phone rests nicely between the windshield and the dash pad. Acting as a heads up display without hindering viability.

Been pretty busy lately working on buying my first house so not really any new progress.  That said, I did snag another shelf warmer.

I figured I'd just mock it up before actually pulling the header to do a real test fit. Glad I did. That damn master cylinder is really annoying.  There are a couple of options if I wanted to try to use this manifold. The first of which is to add an angled adapter which would clock the turbo up a bit to something like...

Clearance would still be pretty tight on the master. So the other option would be to delete or move the brake booster closer to the firewall. I'd like to avoid deleting it all together, but its on the table.
