aaaaah the first blush of youth. Can you buy us a drink before you ask for a fuck? How aboot a pic of said engine? what head is on it? what kind of carb? why do you think it needs a rebuild? Have you tried the Google search engine? It answers many questions.

try this book, many swear by it. http://www.amazon.com/Keep-Datsun-L-Series-Z-Series-Nissan-Alive/dp/031764890X

More reading fun that I doubt you will buy, but if you do you could certainly sell it again for good money.  You don't always see this one for sale.

^That would be a reference for all of the fun stuff you can do before you seal it back up and drop it back in.

The best advise I can give is to dig deep into this site.  Read the toils and successes of others like you so you can learn from them.  That is why they lay it all out on here.  If you see youtube vids of a dude with a headband, hes legit.  Aside from that, youtube is a serious gamble for intel.

Find a local mechanic, or retired mechanic that used to be a certified Datsun mechanic.  That would be an amazing resource for you.  I've got a couple that help me out when I get stuck, but not in NC.

welcome to ratsun. lets start with some info. like why does it need a rebuild? are you capable of doing a rebuild? do you have the time, money tools and space to do a rebuild?

it gets expensive quick. its not a 79 dollar kit you throw on in an afternoon. start by reading other peoples rebuild threads. then read some more. if your motor is toast its probably cheaper and easier to swap it with a runner than to rebuild.

here are some downloads please donate to help keep them around!.

15!  Careful, these guys will corrupt you.  Actually, good on you for learning how to take care of your stuff.  That is a dying trend.  I had a professional rebuild my engine, but I would not hesitate to do so myself now that my friend (the professional) is too far away to work with.  Rebuilding the engine is not crazy at all.  But you will need cash.  You will need a machine shop that is willing to work with you.  You will need a true reference manual (or wish you had one several times a day).  You will need to stay organized and clean.  And you need to have fun.  If you find yourself dreading going back into the garage you are doing it wrong, and you must adjust accordingly.

Ratsun will have your back, but the fee is pictures.  It's a simple equation really.  Pictures  = Interest = Responses.  Without pictures, you will see everyone drift away from your thread.

Oh, and at the end of your re-build, have a trustworthy mechanic that knows about old L series engines if possible, adjust your valve seats and do final tuning.  This will be a huge help for your engine during break-in.

I can remember being 15 and into the datsun 620's of the 70's/80's.  The good days........ Anyways now that I've come back, yes listen to these guys. The build isn't all that hard as your making it out to be.  Find your machine shop that is going to be doing the work for you. Then look around and ask these old timers about a good mechanic from back in the day.  Beleive me were still kickin.  I myself was fortunate I grew up with this guy who was my neighbor and he eventually became a master mechanic at Melloy Datsun here in Albuquerque.  Even though he swears he's all done with that part of his life, his knowledge on the motor is invaluable,  You can do this, and have confidence in yourself that is where all right stuff is.  Within.

why are you asking us how much machine work is when you already have a shop lined up?

ask the shop...

how hard it is to look up these parts on an auto parts website? or to go to a parts store and ask for the price...

im blown away with the lack of common sense nowadays.
