Hey guys,

So i was looking for some cool j-tin for an long time, i was looking at 240z:s but they felt to mainstream, every carguy knows what a z looks like. I wanted somthing that screamd "japanes car" but still was pretty and overseamd  by the masses... Something with that litle extra(turbo :D ). And then this happened:

I bought my first Datsun, a -74 Datsun 160j sss.

I have always been a Toyota guy, but this time i wanted to try somthing different (yes i still have a ke35 corolla to :D ).

The car is running an turboed and supercharged Bmw m42 1.8l engine, equiped with MS.

Rims: Xxr 513:s.

Plans for the cold Finnish winter:

-I disasembled the engine for an overhaul: I ordered new conrods, bearings, timingchain and an cometic .120 MLS headgasket. Im playing with the tought of adding an methanol injection (somebody please talk me out of this :D )

-I really would need to add an LSD for better grip.

Hopefully you will enjoy this tread:

And some pics for the p*cwh*rs :D

(Sorry for the quality of the pics, the are mostly from the ad i found, haven't had the time to take pictures: i have driven the shit out of here insted  )

Thank you, guys. I must say the bmw engine & gearbox swap seems quite easy in these cars, i guess it cant bee much harder on an 510? Anybody want any pictures how its done on this car? Just let me know.

About the exhaust pipe: i've heard from the cool guys that: -"Loud (side) pipes save lifes". So in other words: the exthaustpipe exists infront of the rearwheel on the drivers side. The real reason to this is that the pipe could not fit trough the facotry tailpipe holes in the rear axle.

No video available just yet, but if i get it running just maybe we can figure something out :)

Pictures from the engine parts:

  • 3 months later...

Haven’t got much done lately , it’s a bit cold in the garage -22ºC (-7,6 ºF) … I thought it was the perfect temperature to install pistons so…  at least  I got the pistons installed. :D

I received the head gasket after waiting for almost 2,5 months….  But then again: the head is still at the machine shop. Last time I checked they had at last got the head assembled… with the wrong parts :P

When I bought the car it hadn’t got an working speedometer so I solved this by ordering an GPS speedometer,  so at least I got one problem solved.

Pics to prove I have done something:

Thank you, I must admit that I am a bit proud to own this car: simply it’s beautiful car model with some nice mods on this example.

The engine fits amazingly and look good, the guy who did the swap did an awesome job… Best of all is how well the boost management system works in this car, there must be hundreds of hours to get it working this perfect.  The boost control system is made up by the following components:  a turbo wing control system, Toyota prius electronically controlled throttle control system (working as a bypass valve for the supercharger) and electronically controlled Westgate.

The oil pressure, oil temp, water temp and volt gauge are all 50mm. They cut me back 25$ each, dirt cheap but all the previous meter I’ve owned of the same brand worked like a charm.

The GPS speedometer cost me 95$ including the antenna, much easier to install then mechanical speedometers or the hall impulse driven ones. Size 85mm.

My luck :P When I bought the car none of the gauge cluster background lights worked. So I decided that I would change the light bulbs. After fought for I while I managed to get the cluster lose… this is what I was faced with:

The previous owner had hit the meter metal brace and and circuit board with a Dremmel like a cannibal hits a school bus. He deleted every background light connection, high beam indicator and messed up the watertemp circuit. All this to get the tachometer in the center, -“in true racing spirit”.

So after I many hours of welding, gluing, troubleshooting and reverse engineering I managed to transfer the tachometer to its original location, most of the background lights working and I got the GPS speedo installed instead of the earlier Non-working HAL-driven BMW speedometer.

And because none of you read anything I wrote, Here is a oic instead of the finnished meter:

That is a very nice example , I bet you must be pleased with the purchase? Are you going to re- install the front bumper and make the intercooler more of a stealth installation? The grill is also a non SSS unit but it does much nicer in the darker anthracite shade that has been used on your car compared to the factory light grey.

Almoste done :)

Interesting that the LHD "SSS" dash cluster differs from that supplied on RHD models. The LHD one is basically a stock violet unit but with a rev counter fitted instead of the factory clock. The RHD clusters have inbuilt gauges and the layout is simply sublime.
