Boxcar
There ya go........ Watch that oil pan clearance though. With the shack rev. the axle will swing to the rear. That's why I ended up running a modified crossover steering system over the full high steer. 3" was just a bit close for my liking. I now have 10" to the tie rod and the drag link just clears the pan at full steer and compression. Quote Link to comment
housew
nice work. I feel like a dana 27 is a weird choice, unless it was free or someone paid you to take it. The yota axle should be a better unit. I dig that truck pretty hard. Quote Link to comment
Boxcar
The steering column is a different story. I ran the stock 620 cut down / & re spline'd to Chevy knuckle then an Astro van slip modified to bolt to the Yota. I was trying out the new Mill. Toyota column sounds much easier. ]2eDeYe
nice work. I feel like a dana 27 is a weird choice, unless it was free or someone paid you to take it. The yota axle should be a better unit. I dig that truck pretty hard. The Dana 27 was the predecessor to the Dana 30 and was uses through the late 70's. It was a closed knuckle axle and never came with disc brakes, so someone converted his to disc brakes or it was ordered custom from Dana for the conversion. You can still order a completely custom Dana axle from their factory, so that is probably what happened here. I know the 30 in the front of mine came with a few rare parts that would have been a custom axle build. Of course the work done to put it under the truck was hack, but a decent axle considering how light the 620 is. Quote Link to comment
housew
yea, im from the world of jeep. I have d25s and d27s collecting rust and dust cause I can't give them away. NOT bad axles (thats why i still have them and keeping as spares), but seeing how cheap / available / better dana 30s are that seems to be where people go with it. I think the yota axle and modern runner calipers will be awesome though. This truck is seriously cool, I like it a lot. How big are those tires? Quote Link to comment
sidewayzvegan
Yea, it is way more solid now and will be more of a beast than it was. Here is another shot, not much today, I added a leaf because it needed to be a little more firm. Hopefully next week I will be able to steer and brake. 1 Quote Link to comment
sidewayzvegan
Oh yea and the tires are 31" Quote Link to comment
sidewayzvegan
Also, @ boxcar, thats a crazy steering setup you have, pretty cool. We are leaning toward keeping the datsun steering and trying to adapt it to the box. I don't really want to have to get into wiring if i dont have to ya know? More pics of whatever we figure out next week. but definately thanks for the pics and giving me ideas for steering and power steering. Quote Link to comment
Boxcar
That was the one largest reason I used the Rat column. Wiring stays stock-ish. Truck looks good man. Quote Link to comment
Jester
Don't know if your interested, but, early Studebaker PU's had a Dana 27 rear end that some came with a Power Lock rear Differential. The Power Lock will bolt RIGHT IN to your front end. Later Studes came with the Dana 44, so a lot of early trucks were and still are switched. They are easy to find. Quote Link to comment
]2eDeYe
Are you using the Toyota pump and reservoir? I had to adapt the Nissan lines to the Toyota fittings. I didn't get any pictures of the column install, was in a hurry to get done and go camping. I will see about getting some, I really need to finish it though as I was in a hurry and just made it work. Willdatsun
Nice, not sure about welding the front diff though, unless you only want to go mud bogging in it and not drive it on paved roads. Quote Link to comment
sidewayzvegan
well, I am not welding the rear, so most of the time it will not matter that it is welded. I wont feel it until i put it in 4x4. I do plan on putting a locker in the back at some point tho. Quote Link to comment
Jester
If you decide to weld the front diff, keep in mind any off camber sections in the mud can be a bitch locked in the front. One trick I found to work pretty well ( on an old Willys) is to unlock the uphill hub. Off camber your rig will wan to go straight with both hubs locked in. By unlocking the uphill hub, it allows the down hill front tire to bite without being driven sideways. Being welded in either diffs is not the way to go. Especially if your running Toyota gear. There is enough aftermarket stuff for Toyota running gear you get dizzy going back and forth. Birfield joints DO NOT like to be at full lock while loaded with force. You WILL snap an axle. Trust me. 1 Quote Link to comment
]2eDeYe
I had the front welded in my CJ, I went through a few u-joints but it was a Dana 30. I solved the corner issue by modifying my t-case for front drive and was able to use the fronts to drag the jeep through tight corners. I plan to move that t-case to the Datsun eventually. sidewayzvegan
alrighty, so at this point the landcruiser brake booster and master cylinder are in. it took some fab work and some finagling but it is in. The clutch is hooked up also. Next on the agenda is getting the steering up and going. the plan is to mount up the datsun steering column to the steering box, and it looks like it is going to go fairly smoothly. Once that is done we throw on the backend and I am going to have one bad ass Datsun!! and my custom reinforced brake pedal More to come soon 2 Quote Link to comment

sidewayzvegan
A lot more was done today. We got all the brake lines set up and bled finally and they are stiff and ready to go. The bump stops were welded on and the steering had some major progress. No pics right now, but soon I will get more @ jester, I know, I will get some undercarriage shots soon cuz its lookin bad ass under there!! The goal is to get this thing back on the street next friday. Wish us luck and hopefully I will be running that truck into hillsides and rocks in no time. sidewayzvegan
Sorry for thelag guys. Friday we were able to get the stock datsun steering column rigged up with a bearing and some fine tuning/ welding. We got it to a point that probably another hour or 2 of fab and fitment and I will be destroying the woods in this thing. I will get pics next time Im at the truck. Just as a side note, I have been somewhat distracted with the datsun project as I aquired a 94 land crusher in great shape with the e lockers,. Im soo pumped on it!! anyways more pics to come eventually. 1 Quote Link to comment
