74 620 4x4 dana27 to '83 toyota axle swap

Recommended Posts

What year is your front axle? If gen.#1 then the IFS rear will be a bit wide....

You can remedy this using IFS hubs and calipers with Land Cruiser rotors. Actually there are a couple braking options including Tacoma brakes.

How I did it. (sprinkled through the build). This thing might actually get finished soon, it sat for a while after the SAS

Sweet SAS build j2

and regarding the width of the axles, its an 83 front and an 87 rear.  the rear is wider but im going to run spacers in the front and itll be good.

also I got the rear taken apart and it is a 4:10, everything is clean and ready to go.  next are wheels/ tires and beginning stages of fab work on the truck. still no pics for ya of the rear,  but ill get em soon.

im stoked that its coming together

The 'Yoda front is about an inch wider per side so I assume the rear is too. On my 620 it was so tall and had such large tires you couldn't tell it had the narrower H-190 Datsun axle in it. It was gaining a lot of weight though and the L20B really wasn't up to the job.

did you re gear the datsun rear end?  Mine is sluggish with the lift thats on it with the stock datsun rear end and dana 27 on it.  Thats one of the reasons Im trying the yoda rear because of the 4:10.  Im hoping that the gear change will make a good difference.  If it doesn't........ then screw it we will put a ka in it.  one thing at a time though so that this project actually gets finished..........

So today we got back at the truck.  The steering arm was welded back on so that I can do some dump runs as the truck has become storage since this project started,   by the way do notice my awesome rear bubble window, represent,  i love it

Also the rear end had already been disassembled so today it was cleaned, resealed, and reassembled.  Unfortunately I did not get pics of it disassembled, oh well.

We used bolts to pop the drum off and it was a pain to get off, but nothing some crowbar couldn't fix

And finally threw a quick coat of black on it to keep it from rusting

Thats it for now.  Hopefully real soon we will be able to get to the fun stuff.....  Torching the old and welding the new and really bringing this beast to life..... coming soon

Well today we got a lot done.  We were hoping to get the front hung today and it almost happened.  The front hangar was welded on and gusseted and we made the shackle mounts for the rear of the front springs.

The front end was finally painted, looks good

I have stock Toyota IFS/ late 80's rear springs and cut the overload spring down in order to keep it from being too stiff.   For the rear I have some 2" lift springs.  This set up should put me at a few inches higher than I was already.  But we wont really know till its on there right?  Anyways as for the steering, I have a power steering box from a late 80's Toyota ifs and we are going to put a Toyota column in and figure out the wiring.  I still haven't figured out the pulley system for the power steering, but Im sure there are pulleys for power steering that bolt up to my L18..... Anyone?

So, we will see how all this goes, but it is getting close.  Im pumped.  Gonna be way different from when you owned her.

Alright, so today the shackle mounts were installed and the steering box was mounted with a little more reinforcement on the frame.  also the axle was hung.  this is coming right along and I have to give it up to my buddy Jordan for being a champ.  his welds are awesome.

enjoy
