This reminds me of the time I stopped to visit my uncle. He had a Corvair engine sitting on a pallet. The old bastard starteds it up and it shook its self right onto the ground. He was laughing drunk on whiskey.

When GM abandoned the Corvair, one thing survived.  GM sold their recipe for Silicon nodule embeded Aluminum engine block alloy to Porsche!  Porsche knew what to do with that technology!

It was actually developed by Reynolds Aluminum and is similar to hyper eutectic aluminum pistons with around 17% silicon content. GM had to figure out how to use it as a hardened surface that piston rings could seal against without wearing them out..

The Vega engine, one of the worst pieces of shit gm engines ever made also used this aluminum in it's blocks.

The only aluminum was the crank case and heads on the corvairs. The cylinders were cast iron, just like a VW. The only silicon embedded blocks I know of was the pos vega, and the 928 Porsche. Never saw a 928 trailing blue smoke like a vega though!

Dyno at 1:00 The car it's in looks like ass. (just like the Veron) But it exceeded the dyno's limit and made 4,500hp/3,500tq. Billet one piece aluminum V16 (just think two LS engines, one piece crank and cam. Four turbos at 36psi.
