ratsun workshop project

Recommended Posts

hhhi

after moving to a new place with some room out the back i thought itd be a good idea to make a workshop so i can continue building ratsuns and things. 620 is still where i used to live and hasnt seen progress in a while, i really miss working on it. it and everything else, ive been away from tools and stuff for ages

so this is a build thread for what ive been working on for the last 9 months or so

started out like this, thats the fleet :D just missing the 620 and a cressida, and my current daily. an extra manly mazda demio/bubble

some dudes came round to bore some holes and make some mud

then the shed turned up a couple weeks early

07_10backyard4.jpg

then some formwork and some reo

then some concrete, then saw cuts

just curious, will you be putting up a vapor barrier / insulation ? Other wise it's going to be raining moisture from  gathering on the inside of the metal panels.

nice work, what size is the slab. I got to get me one of these, some day.

Looks great.

I wish i had mine built out of steel like you did,  i'm always worried about torch cutting and welding when i know i'm going in for the night.,, if i ever build another it will be.. (( pipe dream  :crying: ))

thanks fellas

slab is 6" in the middle and 4" either side, 9m by 7.6m. i want to try insulate shed for noise to help keep neighbors happier so sealing it is reasonably important for that. not sure how to go about it yet but when its up ill see what has to be done. gotta be careful with not making it flammable, lots of welding and cutting and things to be done

at work to cut down noise from crane powerpacks theyre contained in steel panels filled with fibreglass, the inside walls are perforated. i saw the same thing at school in a grinding room so ill try figure that out

i initially was going to comment how cool it was that they were using steel instead of just wood, but then some of the finish of the metal kinda resembled aluminum so i assumed it was aluminum.

sooo... is that steel or aluminum beams that we see

I'm not sure they make aluminum sheds of that size (I could be wrong, of course), but I'm pretty sure it's galvanized steel.

youre right. i was confused. i was associating the look of galvanized steel with aluminum for some reason ><

yep all steel. the frame is galvanised steel, its all made of sheet pretty much. from 0.9 to 1.9 depending on which section. i thought of making my own but engineering it might become important later so the costs there already make that idea too expensive. im jealous as of the US, you guys can get away with so much more without bullshit regulation than this place. cars and sheds alike no doubt

ive got one of these waiting to go in, just need to finish the roof first cos the lift isnt weatherproofed. this pretty much had to be to australian standards too, worksafe approved etc :\ it jjjuussssttt fits :D

ive made a pretty complete model in sketchup before i put most of it together, but also did a less detailed one to get an idea of where everything is going. ive planned a mezzanine toward the back to hold a bunch of engines and transmissions ive got spare. theyre hard to store so i figured this would be the most effective way. room underneath for more datsuns

Happens to the best of us man! I only thought it was most likely galvanized because I've helped build one before.

Freedom only matters if you can use it- at least you got a job that allows you to pay for all that in the first place.

weather has been getting in the way but getting there

frame for the door is up after some figuring out

13_10progress1.jpg

i messed up the walls, the top rail was supposed to go on the roof so spent some time fixing that

13_10progress2.jpg

also got the roof ready so i can fix the walls for the raised bit. might be able to get some of the top roof done tomorrow

That is a great looking building. Where did you get it and how much was it? (I realize your no where near me but would like to compare :))

lol your name broke forum quote code

was through a shed place, they figure out kits using various steel stock from whoever supplies them. this one was from bluescope lysaght. theyve figured it out pretty good its coming together ok

this kit was about 10k, thatd probably translate to a lot less in the US tho

little more progress, would have been a lot more were it not for weather

some more sheets up, these were small and easy, the roof sheets managed to hold me up there ok

damn weather. rain was on and off all day. this pic was taken same time, one side was beautiful, the other was rain and wind. perfect shed weather

14_10progress2.jpg

this side done

14_10progress3.jpg

was raining pretty consistent toward the end of the day, so i put these roof rails together at the right length ready for the top roof. still dunno how im going to do that

14_10progress5.jpg

also since it was undercover i fitted some of these, kind of a draft/weather seal. i just hope it keeps out spiders

got a little more done today, was supposed to rain hard all day today but turned out cloudy and warm and kinda nice

screwed the other wall down proper and sheeted other side of the step up

20_10progress1.jpg

20_10progress2.jpg

then measured out the outer top roof rafters since thats all i could reach. managed to get them screwed down nice and figured out they were strong enough to have a ladder lashed to them so i can reach the rafters to go in near the peak. hopefully works out that way, i dunno how else to do it without spending money

nice! home workshops are best workshops. wasnt much of a view to begin with, probably better for them cos more shade. no skin cancer for them

weather and overtime have been holding things up. today was pretty good. the last two rafters in

27_10roof1.jpg

started on the roof and got it all up, just needs to be screwed down proper. the plastic panels dont line up to the ones in the other roof bits, i call it character

lookin better, not too far to go

27_10roof5.jpg
