]2eDeYe
Posted in the grass at the show. My buddy's truck is running a 12 valve Cummins with a 5 speed- pulled my car like it wasn't even there! Any shots of the Cummins? Build thread on that truck somewhere? Quote Link to comment
twistedimages
I'm trying to keep moving on this car, I promise! The big fabrication work is mostly done, so a lot of what I'm doing doesn't make for much of a post... But here's some stuff anyway! When I set the airbag brackets up, I installed them a couple inches higher than they needed to be to make the car lay on the ground- partially so I have to run higher pressure to achieve ride height (which will hopefully stiffen the ride a bit), and also so I can run a taller wheel/tire combo if I want. Here's a shot of my front wheel at full tuck: http://www.twistedimages.us/510/347.jpg I've started taking the BBS wheels apart for refinishing, and I'll probably go with a slightly taller tire all around to get the center caps tucked a bit more. The rear wheels may also be going a bit wider, since I have some clearance between the inner lip and my trailing arms. We'll see- a bit more rubber on the ground might be a good thing! While the BBS wheels are off, my buddy lent me a set of stock Q45 wheels so the car can still be moved- I kinda like 'em! http://www.twistedimages.us/510/342.jpg http://www.twistedimages.us/510/343.jpg I've got a pile of stainless tubing sitting at the shop, just waiting on my exhaust flange before we start building the header. I'll post some pics of that process- should be fun! In the meantime, I made a panel to hold the MSD box and coils on the cowl. I won't be running wipers, so this covers that hole nicely. http://www.twistedimages.us/510/346.jpg I have to mount it a bit better, but it's a start. Not "my car" related, but still Datsun stuff: I went up to Oroville a few weeks ago to drop off a bumper and some doors for Bob Grant of Grant Kustoms. If any of you minitruck dudes read this post you'll know the name, but for everyone else I'll just say he's the best sheetmetal customizer I've ever known. Truly an artist! He's got a field full of projects outside his shop, but this is the one that caught my interest: http://www.twistedimages.us/510/344.jpg http://www.twistedimages.us/510/345.jpg I kindly offered to take the '68 grille off his hands, but he knows what he has! He's got some fun plans for the car, but I'll let him make his own build thread! That's about it for now- I'll post some wheel pics soon I hope! twistedimages
Any shots of the Cummins? Build thread on that truck somewhere? I'll bug Riley to make his Z build thread, so he can post more pictures of the truck. We just rolled in it again last weekend to pick up another project car- it's a head-turner for sure! 1 Quote Link to comment

twistedimages
While I've been waiting for some of the mechanical stuff to come together (header and exhaust, shock mounts, etc), I got a little antsy and picked up some new tail lights! Marking out some cut lines... http://www.twistedimages.us/510/350.jpg http://www.twistedimages.us/510/351.jpg http://www.twistedimages.us/510/352.jpg No turning back now! http://www.twistedimages.us/510/353.jpg http://www.twistedimages.us/510/354.jpg Test-fitting one side. http://www.twistedimages.us/510/355.jpg Held in with one nut per side- I had to make a run to Ace for some new hardware! http://www.twistedimages.us/510/356.jpg And done! http://www.twistedimages.us/510/357.jpg http://www.twistedimages.us/510/358.jpg I found some nickel plated plugs to fill the license light holes- I'll just throw some button head bolts in the bolt holes to finish it off. Then I'll just have to come up with some sort of license light... My wheels are completely apart and ready to head out for some polish! http://www.twistedimages.us/510/360.jpg 30 bolts per wheel... even with air tools that process took a long time! While I had all of these centers and barrels sitting, I played around with them: http://www.twistedimages.us/510/359.jpg I'd need some MAJOR flares to run them like this!! One last note for today: If you ever want to feel loved, have a friend watch your house while you're out of town. Came home to this present: http://www.twistedimages.us/510/361.jpg My shower stall was filled with balloons, which was funny enough, but when I finally went out to work on the car I found this extra surprise! Fortunately, just airing the car up and rolling it into the driveway was enough to pop almost all of them! So, wheels are getting picked up today, driveshaft is done and ready to go pick up, and the car should be heading to the shop for some welding next week! It's on a roll now- let's see if I can get it driveable for Canby! Edited October 27, 2022 by twistedimages oics 10 Quote Link to comment

Lockleaf
It shames me to say it, because I loves me some meshies, but I actually like the look of those q45 rims better. 1 Quote Link to comment
WagDatto
Until you see what the meanies are about to look like... Quote Link to comment
twistedimages
If the Q wheels didn't have such weak specs (15x6.5, +45 offset), I'd totally rock em! Love the full face look. But the BBS wheels are going to be super clean when I get them back. Can't wait! 2 Quote Link to comment
Lockleaf
I'm not yet cool enough to have done multi piece bbs. I've got a set of rx7 convertible single piece bbs waiting for mgr to finish my 5 lug swap on my s13 though. They are about as weak as your q45s. 15x7 +4something. Love them anyways. I do want to see your finished rims. I love the build, it's ridiculous in all the right ways. Keep it up. Quote Link to comment
Seansm10
No and then! (Sorry couldn't resist) Great story.. MOAR! I'm so glad I went back to the start of the thread for a full read through and saw a dude where's my car quote hahaha 1 Quote Link to comment
twistedimages
The RX7 BBS wheels will look great with some spacers. These Q wheels needed 10mm spacers on the rear just to keep them from rubbing on the trailing arms- no good! I picked up my driveshaft yesterday, and it fits perfectly. Driveline Service of Sacramento took good care of me- definitely recommend them to anyone local. 1 Quote Link to comment
reza
Very cool car, I dig the Trans-am graphics down the side and trunk.. Is it an ex racer, or some kind of package? Quote Link to comment

twistedimages
Very cool car, I dig the Trans-am graphics down the side and trunk.. Is it an ex racer, or some kind of package? Take a look at page 8 - my car was a dealer appearance package, sort of a tribute to the car the Bay Area Datsun Dealers campaigned in the Trans Am series. Originally came with a wood rim steering wheel and center console- not sure if it had any other fancy options... 1 Quote Link to comment
reza
^ Thanks, I don't know how I missed it.. has a really cool history to it, do you know how many tribute cars drove off the lot?? Any plans for eventual body work or paint restore in the future? Quote Link to comment
twistedimages
I only have evidence of one other car with this graphic package- a good friend dug up pictures he took at a Pick N Pull 15 years ago. Shame he didn't grab the door and fender, because they were a lot better than the ones I have on there! I'm undecided on body and paint at this point. I'd like to find an original white fender and match the stripe on it, but other than that I think I'm going to keep it original for the time being. This project has already blown any budget I may have had in mind, and adding paint and body to that would just ruin my marriage. Plus, it's only original once, right? 4 Quote Link to comment

sedition88
I'd leave it as is if it were mine. That's my plan for my 4 door, make everything nice and new under the body and leave the outside ratty. Quote Link to comment
twistedimages
That's kind of my goal at this point. With the exterior as rough as it is, it'll be more shocking to pop the hood or trunk and see all the work that went into it! 1 Quote Link to comment
shacks510
What are the plans for the front wheel wells? The suspension is too nice to hide. Quote Link to comment
twistedimages
No inner wells. When the firewall goes back in I'll make support rods to tie in the front clip to the rest of the car, but no sheetmetal. This car would be terrifying in the rain, so I'll just have to deal with road dust- maybe clean the engine bay more often... Quote Link to comment
