KiloTango1200
I marked the bearing caps with a Sharpie, but then I found an assembly mark. The axle bearing races look marginal. Lots of surface rust. Edited June 9, 2015 by KiloTango1200 1 Quote Link to comment
KiloTango1200
Lots of rust surface rust on the face of the pumpkin. The pinion has made it's mark. More surface rust on the pumpkin. 1 Quote Link to comment
KiloTango1200
The pinion gear looks really good. Don't see any major wear on the gear. 1 Quote Link to comment
KiloTango1200
The bearings need to be replaced. This one is in good shape. This one, not so much. 1 Quote Link to comment
KiloTango1200
After further inspection, the cracked part that thisismatt noticed. Nice catch Matt. The inner housing of the LSD is cracked. On the other side there are 2 cracks. No telling how many cracks are hidden. I am afraid I am hosed on the LSD. Quote Link to comment
KiloTango1200
Everyone thought the differential had 4:11 gears, but the ring and pinion both have 309 marked on them. Quote Link to comment
thisismatt
It would be interesting to see what's going on with the pinion shaft. Does this model have a sleeve that retains the correct spacing for the bearings & pinion depth? 1 Quote Link to comment

The data for the find must be extracted from the designated anal orifice. 3 Quote Link to comment
KiloTango1200
Just kidding. I will try to figure out what was going on inside the differential. Quote Link to comment

No clue what "309" means, but... 37 tooth ring gear + 9 tooth pinion gear = 4.11. B) Sad to hear the LSD housing is cracked... :crying: 1 Quote Link to comment

KiloTango1200
Started the dis-assembly process of the LSD unit. Lots of pictures for re-assembly in case it can be saved. Trying to stay optimistic. Assembly marks and I added one on the ring gear. Marked the bolts holding the ring gear so they will go back to the same place. The ring gear came off without much fuss. KiloTango1200
Either NISMO screwed up during assembly or this unit has been apart before. The other screws were like new but this one and the one across from it required penetrating oil, MAP Gas and the impact driver. Photo is before extraction. After the ring gear was removed, I found other damage, Dammit! Looked over the other crack and found this. The inner unit is toast. However one of my co-workers runs a CNC Machine part time and told me if I need any parts made to give them to him. 1 Quote Link to comment
KiloTango1200
The (bottom plate?) came off the (top assembly?) relatively easily. 2 of the (thrust washers?) came off with the bottom plate. All the thrust washers are marked for proper re-assembly. (Disclaimer: All descriptions are now wild ass guesses because I don't have any idea of what the hell I am doing.) 1 Quote Link to comment

thisismatt
Are you using a #3 phillips tip (or larger)? Phillips is the devil, but it really helps if you use the right size. 1 Quote Link to comment
datsunfreak
Also, that Traction Concepts bit looks like it's just a rebranded Phantom Grip. Probably not worth the money... http://www.tractionconcepts.com/Datsun-B310-Datsun-B210-Sunny-H150-Diff-Lsd-Kit-p/tcda6441.htm Spend 5 minutes reading this: http://mycomputerninja.com/?p=440 And then do some more research on Phantom Grip "LSDs"... 2 Quote Link to comment

I used MAP gas heat and the biggest phillips that came with my impact driver. It came out with little problem and no further damage. The screw was already messed up when I found it after removing the ring gear. Quote Link to comment

KiloTango1200
I was bummed out about the information I was getting for the Sedan's differential. The NISMO unit is broken. Traction Concepts unit is junk. A Mazda RX7 GSL-SE diff. is expensive and hard to find. A Ford 8.0 adds 70 lbs. and a Ford 8.8 adds 90 lbs. All the replacement differentials need modification that will cost hundreds, if not thousands of dollars. I decide to dis-assemble the broken NISMO LSD because I have nothing to loose. An 8 mm deep well socket is the perfect drift punch to gently persuade the LSD come apart. I used the ring gear turned upside down,as a spacer, to get the interior unit out. Quote Link to comment
