trans swap

Recommended Posts

I want to swap out my 3 speed auto trans out with a 5 speed maual trans. What do I need to do to do the swap, the mounts are the same so, that's not a worry, But, would the gearing in the rear differential be different, and which would be better to run? And as long as we're on the diff, can I change the pinion seal without affecting the bearing?

You need the clutch and brake pedals. A clutch master cylinder and the push rod connecting it to the pedal. A slave cylinder and a hard line and a flex line to connect the two. The transmission may have a shifter and dust boot for it, a clutch arm and dust boot and a pushrod to connect it to the slave. If not these will need to be sourced also. A clutch and pressure plate and the matching release bearing collar. A flywheel. A pilot bushing for the end of the crankshaft. (be sure to remove the small cover plate on the end of the crank that was used with the automatic)

If the auto and the 5 speeds are the same length the driveshaft should work.

Speedo cable should work.

Don't know about the rear mounts... I doubt very much it's a simple swap.

Probably need a standard driveshaft.

An engine plate between trans and the block. Autos didn't have them, well not a full plate only the lower half.

The standards had 3.70 and autos were 3.889 not enough to worry about but your speedo will be out..

No. That's for an automatic flex plate. The standard flywheel bolts have shoulders on them to spread the torque when tightening them. That will only prevent the bolt from going deep enough into the crank.
