wagon axle off-center?

its not a variance when they are all the same... Every single 510 wagon owner claims its offset to the driver side...

If it was actually centered, then a 3/8" variance would mean 3/16" to either the passenger side or driver side...

I more believe it was cheaper to make the axle shafts the same size, which resulted in the diff carrier in the center of the axle, which then means the pinion is off center. They then moved the axle housing to split the difference of centering the axle housing and drive shaft.

and FYI, you meant 10mm not 10cm...

New problem .. I managed to move the axle about 5mm to the passenger side. The rims fit equally on both sides now, but it looks like the tire will hit the lower shackle/shock mount on the driver's side. There's over 10mm of clearance on the passenger side, but less than zero on the driver's side. WTF?? is that possible?

One or both leaf springs may have a horizontal curve in them besides the normal vertical one. If the springs were off the car were they swapped? shackles swapped?

Could you remove the U bolt and lift the axle perch off the spring. Drill a new hole for the spring pack and shift the axle over, if it will go?

Just loosen the u-bolts and see if you can wiggle it back into place before you tighten the u-bolts. Make sure they are properly torqued too.

A leaf spring suspension is about the oldest design extant, and it has a few flaws. This problem you described is one of them.
