I found an 85 300 with 185,000 miles for a grand.. the guy wasnt real talkative so Im a little suspicious.. I only want it for the motor and tranny to swap into my 521.. hes asking a grand, which seemed a little low.. he said It doesnt smoke or knock and will make the 200 mile drive to my house.. maybee its just my nature to be suspicious.. any Input is welcome.. what should I look for, or ask?

you should rebuild it then you wont have to worry about it :D Then when you get it in your rig it will be a good runner. The 87/88 have the better ecu's from what I hear.

late 1987 to 1989 are the 16bit ECU but still rated at the same hosepower.

If you get it, replace the timing belt! (correctly) not that I know how, but my friend's Z just bit it after only a couple years since the new belt was replaced. Obviously not done correctly or something.

If it starts up cold, idles good, revs quick with no hesitation then take it for a test drive. Make sure it revvs to at least 5 grand and let it fully warm up on your test drive. That's about it. $1000 isn't bad. 1984/85 are the least desirable due to the ugly body. The car could just not be in a good cosmetic condtiion to be sold at that price. I've seen the Z31 for much less as a running car. Maybe its a 2+2 :D

Is it a 5-speed? better find that out as well.

So flashed is another way to say programmed, correct..

So 87-89 is the way to go.. I was actually thinking of building it fresh Jeff... after of course I get it in and running so I can work out the bugs and find where everything is going to mount up, so when I disasemble it to get built I can be "PAINTING"... what about turbo??? I know that the compression is a little diffrent on the Turbo but thats only the Pistons correct? Is there any other problems regarding turbocharging the N/A.. Computer??

um 1000 for a n/a is a bit high unless its mint, IMO. peace.

that was for the whole car... Im sick of chasing parts im buying the whole car and scraping it when im done with it.

computer, fuel injectors, compression, exhaust manifolds.

The usual differences. Might as well just find a turbo engine if you can. I see them now and then cheap but I don't bother with those.

What im asking is if I have the 88-89 ecu, then I can have it programmed. If I do a turbo Ill do larger injectors turbo... plenem.. all that shit. Just figure Ill get an NA and drive and learn about it while I collect everything needed for the conversion.. But if this is a bad Idea.. By all means I will listen, Ive got time to wait and find a Turbo. Have to sell the Ford Exploder first.

how about fitment? That VG will barely fit in there as it is. The turbo hanging off one side certainly wont fit. You'll have to cut out your upper a-arm on one side.

Yes a 1988-89 NA ECu can be programed for a performance turbo ECU. Or turbo one can be reprogramed. probably $600+

a Z31 in mint condition is not a $1000 car. We're not talking about a B210. Really good Z31's sell for $3k-5k still.

I think getting a turbo under the hood of a 521 with a VG is going to be a very tight fit. I'd consider building up a NA VG. I know you can get cams for them. You will probably have to make headers to get it in the engine bay. Then there's tuning. Should be able to have 200whp with a NA VG30. You could also up the displacement with a VG33..

Tell you what... I think Ill be lucky to get the N/A motor in there period. And there is a pretty good chance the exaust manifolds will have to be chopped all to shit. Couple of N/A's in Tulsa, might go drive one this wknd.. a 5 speed with 89,0000 miles. 2 owner car... think I should tell him my plans:D

I have had a couple. deffinately get a newer 1 like 87-89

the early 1's had really bad lifters. lots of clatter. I think they might of had a recall on them back in the day.

no matter what change the timing belt. Probably the main cause of engine failures on the vg.

don't tell the guy about your plans. some people are funny.

also, any body or interior flaws gives you some bargaining power.

don't forget if you get 1. don't scrap the front hubs. they can be used on an s30 for the 5 lug conversion. also the rear end will be an r200. fits in any Z or ZX 240-300zx to 89

turbo vg in a 520? not unless you fab some tricky exhaust mani's, or maybe an under chasis mount turbo? hmmm
