Disc Brake Kit Install - mklotz70

I've been meaning to get this up for some time now.  I did a complete disc installation on a 521 recently and shot a lot of video while I was at it.  I'll be posting all the vid on youtube, this will make it a lot easier to find the vids specific to the install.  I separated the drum removal vid since it's not really necessary for the disc upgrade.  These vids are going to be long enough!!!

 

The first is long and detailed.  The second is real time.  Past this point of the install, it's basically just installing parts, the hard part is over......more or less :)

I'm going to say $200 shipped(flat rate priority in the US) and only for guys buying them for my brake kit.  I haven't completely added up the cost of the parts yet, but I think that's a safe price for now.  I'll have to find out how much the bearings are going to be.  I have no desire to refurb hubs for guys that are not brake kit customers, lol!!  I'm just trying to help out those guys that want this kit, but don't have access to the hubs.

 

I will clean them up, true up the wheel mounting surface.  I will only clean up the other areas if they're beat up and need it.......but not if it's just cosmetic.  I will install new studs and bearings, new nissan caps will come with them, but....I will not be painting them.  The seal comes in the brake kit.

 

Cleaning up greasy parts is one of my least favorite things to do so typically, I just resell them "as pulled" from the yard.  Then they're about $100 shipped(flat rate in the US). 

 

The hubs actually show up new, online, in at least two places.....but they're about $250-280 each.

I dropped off the 411 brackets, 710 brackets, 1/8" wheel spacers and truck brackets at TFC Plating this morning. They said it might take about a week. Tons of house work and cleaning for a yard sale this weekend......then I'll get to making the 620 inner bearing adapters.

Hi so I have a 1972 Datsun 620 pickup with all four drum brakes, I was wanting to buy your brackets, but I had a few questions and that is what hubs do I get? And also calipers and rotors? I'm just confused on what cars can I pull the hubs from. And also like I said what calipers and rotors can I use?

"whole set"...??  I've sold hubs before to guys in areas that just can't find them, but I don't think I've ever offered to sell all the parts in a package deal.  If the calipers turn out to be bad, I don't want to get stuck in the middle of a warranty issue.  I'm not sure I have any hubs left.  I'd have to check.

I've intentionally held off on putting more info in here until I was a lot closer to being done.  I'm getting to that point.  Some people have already seen this on FB or IG, but I figured I'd put post some up here for those that done do much social media.

 

I've been wanting to make a one piece bracket for quite some time.  This is what I've come up with for an aluminum version that I can machine in house.....for the time being.

Although I still have my original owner 1967 RL411 in almost as delivered condition [after 49 years some parts do wear out], I applaud your efforts to keep the early Datsuns, especially the various 410 and 411 variants on the road instead as "museum" but undrivable examples.  Keep up the good work, and if you need a factory original RL411 to engineer off of, I would be glad to drive my 160,000 mile original RL411 [with original British Borg Warner Automatic Transmission] example to a mutually agreeable meeting point, like your garage!  The RL411 is a great car and deserves to be preserved, and not cannibalized for dubious other version "upgrades" so let's keep them on the road and out of the few museums, or varacious Japanese JDM buyers.  Japanese buyers?  Just because the 411 was the first car they bought after they got their driver's license, and JDM 411s have all been scrapped due to age and stringent examination criteria, and the export versions have the exotic Left Hand Drive setup, American and European export 411 [and later "Domestic" Naha Okinawa LHD] versions have become desirable,

One thing I have heard about your original brake kit is that it extends track width.

Is this true? And by how much?

 

Do your aluminum brackets keep those same dimensions?

 

 

My tire/wheel poke is about as maxed as I'd like. Don't want to mess with that,but I really want your parts...

 

 

...and...where is the matching rear brake kits?

LOL!!  Ummm.....the equipment making some of this possible has eliminated my "garage" space.  I couldn't even pull a go-kart in if I wanted.  I'm kinda hoping that in another year or so, I can afford to build a shop here or maybe go rent a space.  It sure it nice having it at home!  

 

I wish I had more time to play with some of the other models like the 410/411's.  Sadly, they're such an extremely small market, I may not do any more of the disc kits after these last 4 or 5 are gone.  Of course, that might be a good time to create them in aluminum. lol   An upgrade for the SSS models would be nice....yes, they have discs, but I doubt you can find rotors or calipers anymore.  If I had more space, I could have more projects going on at the same time.  I'm limited right now to what I can move aside or put away easily.  If I end up waiting for parts/supplies on one project, it gives me a chance to work on another......provided I can move the first out of the way easy enough.  Maybe in another 5-10 years, I can retire and have more time to work on stuff. :)

 

Kinda of a double edge sword with the value of the 411's going up.  Some will get saved, but more(nicer ones) will end up going for parts.  I don't seem to have that problem with my Kia. LOL :)

You're correct.....and no, I'm not sure the vids answered the question.  They push each side out about 5/8"(.625").  I'm sorry to say, but the new version will move out another .050". Less than a 1/16".  The trade off is that stock rims fit without the 1/8" spacer now......so for the guys running stock rims, they gain a tiny bit of space........which that definitely don't need with stock rims! lol!!

 

If you're worried about your wheel poke, then you're not running stock rims.  I'm going to be working on a "big" brake kit (hopefully soon), that will not use the passport rotor.  It may not be very cheap though.  I may end up using wilwood hubs($160ish each?), rotors and calipers.  I'd like to stay with nissan parts, but something has to give when you're trying to stay within other design criteria.  I may opt to use the stock hub....hhmm....I could actually do it so that the 620 bearing could be used with no spacer.  It will require custom made top hat most likely.  I haven't really spent much time looking at it yet....been busy enough with this setup! lol

 

With the new front disc setups I want to do, I'll definitely need to do a rear.....I'm just not sure I can keep it nissan.  I'd love to do one that fits stock rims on the rear....might have to get a bit creative.
