rjdaaa
Hello; I just joined the forum and have had a 1975 Datsun 620 for many years, I mostly used it with a 7 foot six pack camper but now I removed the camper and plan to drive more on the freeway. Thus, I need to know what years of other Datsun cars or trucks with 5 speeds will pretty much bolt right in with just a speedo gear change, same driveline, etc. I looked on the site and looks like certain years 280ZX might be the easiest fit? Thanks for any help here. Robert Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
'77-'79 620 '80 720 (2wd) '77-'78 280z '79-'83 280zx (non turbo) '79-'84 810/Maxima All these years have an L 5 speed as standard or an option. There are 3 different ratio spreads with the '79 620 and the '80 720 having the wide ratio. The 280z and first year ('79) 280zx, 810/Maxima and '77-'78 620 have the mid ratio. The '80-'83 280zx having the closest ratio gear box. As far as over drive, the '80-'83 280zx hands down has the highest with 25%. All the rest are in the 15% range. All will bolt in no mods required. 1 Quote Link to comment

Llittle_Llama
Goes without saying, but make sure to check the drain plug before pulling the "new" one for any unsusal metal shavings. Quote Link to comment
seventhree.datsun
@ king rat what would be the best for a 73'620 I have a L16 wirh 4 speed in it now im going to the eagle rock swap meet to get a tranny of a 280z. What do you think ..would it work Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Yes a '77-'78 280x 5 speeed will work but because it is longer than your 4 speed you will need the shorter front driveshaft from a '74 on up 620. If you get it also get the transmission mount . A 200sx dogleg 5 speed will fit without changing the driveshaft but they are getting rare. You would have to modify the rear mount as well. When tranny shopping remove the drain plug and inspect. Use a 1/2" ratchet end or it may need a large cressent wrench. It has a magnet on it to collect ferous metal like ball bearings and metal shavings. I doubt it will have oil in it but if it has some drip it out and inspect. Milky brown is water. Silver or silver flakes it aluninun. Oil can be dark golden brown and clear see through. It should have a good unbroken reverse light switch half way up the passenger side behind the clutch arm.Try to get one with the shift arm rubber boot and the shifter and boot or you will have to find them later.
