Hi Joey! I am restoring my 280z and I would like installing those ccw wheels in mi car. I was looking at the website ccw wheels and the 16" appears in different lip sizes¡ Do you know the size lip of your wheels?

Wow, i can't believe its been almost a year since my last update. Hopefully i can upload all my pics and post something up this weekend.

sweet ride man

Thanks buddy!

WOW why haven't I seen this thread bump in the last year? The updates are AWESOME!

Yep, an update is definately over due.

absolutely amazing. DAMN that thing looks good. NICE work

I was looking at some z's online and then at mine and thinking how far from cool my stocker was. but you just posted a pretty sweet recipe.

coilovers, camber plates, 16x10 -25 215/45, over fenders, bre rear spoiler, and is that a bre front lip, fender mirrors, and remove the bumpers. Sounds like something i could do for ~3k and a couple days in the garage. I actually hope i have a little rust or bondo cause i don't want to cut up a clean car, but i want to cut it up lol.

Haha, go for it!

very nice.  really like those wheels

Thanks!

It wont be that color for much longer  B)

your car looks really good i even like the new paint job seen it on ig the other day!

That was actually just a render. The car should be ready to go in a 2-3 weeks.

holy shit, ive been in love with your car for a while now. its been an inspiration to me for a while. keep it up!

About to start working on the front suspension a bit before starting to pull the engine.

This was the last time i drove her... It's been just about a year. Picture was taken April of 2014

Pulled the motor at a buddy's house as he has more space.

Stripped the bay as much as i could

IMG_71271_zpsthwaqhgu.jpg

Pulled off as much as i could that day... 4 hour drive to the shop that's was supposed to do my paint and body work. Thinking about that shop just makes me angry.

IMG_70571_zpsfb8ijuuz.jpg

Okay so... Next day... made it to the shop. The owner goes by Soloelement. NEVER DO BUSINESS WITH THIS GUY!

Okay, before continuing I want to give a bit of back story as to why i chose this shop 4 hours away from my home. The car was supposed to be a 2014 SEMA build going under Airrex USA. This guy had worked with them once before and he offered to do the job for just the cost of paint and materials which i couldn't refuse. BASF ended up sponsoring the Z and i got all the primer, paint, clear, hardener... EVERYTHING. I help up my end of the deal and paid our agreed amount anyway. The following picture are from the countless times i drove up to Soloelement on the weekend. Oh, did i mention its a 4 hour drive?! :sneaky:

Next trip up there, nothing was done so i had to pull out my toolbox and get to work.

IMG_81501_zpsikdh3atw.jpg

The following trip up there I started with the welding... Yes i did... Never used a welder but i had to learn.. This was 4 weeks into the build because there was absolutely ZERO progress.

IMG_75771_zps9esjmb9d.jpg

There were a few more trips in between this but after all that I'm thinking there is not much else i can do. He needs to sand and do this thing. I focus on the motor because i need to have the swap ready for when i get the car back. I'm here rushing to get everything done because i don't want to be holding up the line.

IMG_71541_zps7sow57tr.jpg

Fast forward. SEMA is only a couple of months away and the car has not been touched since i last did. I took the car in Late April... SEMA is in Early November. Suspension is in from Airrex so i get to work on that. Little did i know the car would sit in this same spot until weeks before SEMA.

IMG_85531_zps2qvgrn6v.jpg

Pulled the old suspension and took this pic to show the evolution this car will be going through. Lukily i was able to find a local to swap suspensions with me since i needed a clean slate to work on.

IMG_85371_zpsixa8qwws.jpg

Ready for sale...

IMG_85661_zpseyuuz3pf.jpg

Suspension is ready to accept the new Airrex bags.

IMG_86691_zpskvbvtaya.jpg

IMG_86611_zps6uqygwhz.jpg

While i was down there i decided to do a few more things

IMG_86671_zps1dzq5cwf.jpg

IMG_86761_zpsvshkbltj.jpg

IMG_86771_zpskq67dbvj.jpg

At this point i know the car is not going to make it but Soloelement keeps reassuring me that it will be ready. He's a man of his word so he will have it done. So i push on... Engine bay cleaned and scuffed up to the best that i could...I was so un-motivated at this point... Thinking did he really plan to just paint over this...

IMG_88431_zpsod8refby.jpg

Paint from BASF is in!

IMG_88391_zps4dladwas.jpg

Remember that spot the car was jacked up on... That's where he painted the engine bay... Yay!

Oh, this is a week before car needs to Ship to Vegas. Were in Florida. He still tells me it will be done....

Made it to SEMA... I flights and hotel had been booked months before...

IMG_90911_zpspfge1chu.jpg

We talk there... he still says he will get it done. I decided to give him a few weeks. I'm texting and calling almost daily at this point. Weeks go by and he says its almost ready. We set a date for pickup. He is no where to be found. After a 4 hour drive and hours of sitting outside of his shop. He tells me its ready and painted but he had an emergency and is out of town. LUCKILY, i peak through his window and see my car... Surprise, surprise... its still blue. I'm furious at this point. I call him threatening him with the cops. He comes the next day give me my car back and gives me all these stories as to why he couldn't get it done. It looked like he was going out of business. His electricity was cut off. At that point i started thinking back i never saw cars coming in to get work done. I never saw any employee of his... He created this illusion as to how well he was doing, but it was all a lie. So this is what i got back. Just like it was right before SEMA. 28 weeks the car was at his shop.

IMG_96321_zpsz79hztb9.jpg3

YES, that hole on the left side he just painted over. I cut it out for him to weld a plate but he ignored it.

IMG_96351_zpscro0chfk.jpg

Took some pics while refueling

IMG_96401_zpsfou3qwvp.jpg

I'm trying to look at the bright side, at least the rear is shaved.

IMG_96421_zpsd889kvph.jpg

Then i check his work.... Sigh...

IMG_00901_zpsbe47exeq.jpg

So top pic is what i was supposed to be picking up. Bottom is what i actually got... I used this to blast him on social media.

IMG_96491_zps8ugpzgu9.jpg

At that point i have zero motivation to get the car done and a few months go by which brings us to the present.

I cleaned up the engine bay the other day to figure out what I'm going to do.

IMG_00871_zpsdub14dkx.jpg

Oh i forgot about the l28ET. The block was damaged so i decided to scrap that idea. Yesterday I stripped the motor so i could try and recoup some of the money from that. It had a P90 head and forged pistons so i should be okay.

IMG_00961_zpsudek6rae.jpg

IMG_00971_zps0y1dmrdn.jpg

IMG_01291_zps9ix9zcoq.jpg

The plan now is dropping a RB25DET into it

The task at hand is to do as much research as possible to so i can attempt to do this on my own. I got some pretty hefty quotes doing this at a shop. $8500 from one shop to do everything even get the motor. Another shop $2800 for labor and wiring fuel and ECU, this came out to about $7200 after buying all the needed parts. Cant afford that lol.

I'll do my best to keep this thread updated. Most likely i'll be working on the car every weekend. I'm motivated to get this car back on the street again. I miss taking her to shows.

Glad to see you didn't give up after all that.

It's your car, just don't ruin it.

It's also not my money, so i'll suggest the most expensive option.

Yea the airride is done and working. I'm not sure when Airrex is making the announcement of the kits going for sale.

If you don't do you own work and just have to have a shop do it.....

Get references. Talk to customers and go see the work done on their cars. If on the 'up and up' there should be lots of them and willing to show you. Ask them questions like were there problems getting the work done, how well was it done, was it done on time.

Talk to the builder. If it sounds too good to be true it probably is. Get a time line for the work done and a break down of work and an estimate on paper. For example body work finished second week $1,800. Pay $1,800 and NO MORE until body work is done. Do not move on to the next item.. do NOT pay more money!

NEVER NEVER NEVER pay up front. If the builder want's all the agreed on money up front... GO SOMEWHERE ELSE. Pay only for work to be done that week or two weeks or what ever his and your agreed upon time line. This is a 'pay as you go'. Builder has an incentive to get the work done to your satisfaction before he gets more money and moves on.

BE INVOLVED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Probably the biggest most important thing. At least every week go and review the work. Again this is an incentive for the builder to make good on his promises. This is NOT a visit where he tells you why he couldn't finish the work HE agreed he would do, and you say 'Oh, OK". Do not settle for phone calls. If you get the run around about problems, or he asks for more money.... cut your losses and tow your vehicle home or somewhere else. It's true... "A fool and his money are soon parted"

Thanks for the input Mike. That all made a lot of sense. If I do decide to go to a shop ill definitely keep all that in mind! For now Im hoping to run into some Miami guys that can help me in a driveway or a garage to help with my project and try to do most of the work I can do myself to save a little lol. Or if anything recommend me to a place or person that have experience with the stuff I want to do with the Z in the South FL area. Hope Joey J can see this lol.

Sorry this might be a little long.  This is my first classic Z. It actually is a very solid car. I paid 2500$ and I've seen worse at that price. Had plenty 240sx before with a KA-t and my favorite one a 98 240sx 1J. So this is my first 280z that I want to build.

I have a decent tool collection. I do what I can handle. And have time for on my driveway (No garage). I have the Haynes manual so far and all these forums. I bought the car not being able to run and start and realized it was just the starter. So I got it started and loved driving it. So far I did all the maintenance stuff. Plugs, wires, distributor cap and rotor, did the rear drums, oil change, fixed a little surface rust on the roof, fiber glassed a little hole in the passenger floor pan. Took up the bumpers, installed a front air dam and other little things I cant think of right now.

There are little rust areas that need to be checked out besides little stuff on the body. I think the TC rod area on the frame on the passenger side might need a little attention. The driver side looks ok. I already have the bad dog frame rails ready to be welded. Under battery tray needs some repair too. But otherwise a very solid and fun car to drive.

I am not looking to do a V8 swap and really trying to keep it all Nissan. Was thinking a L28ET. Maybe RB? I gotta go boost lol. At least 400 HP. Kinda spoiled with my old 240sx making 528HP. But like everyone I am on a budget and need to think things through on what I want to spend because I also want to enjoy the car as well and not let it sit in a shop forever. Would like to do things little by little. And if possible some help with some local guys rather than a shop that wont cost me an arm and a leg. I know it will take a long time to build it the way I want but I am trying to enjoy it while I work on it too if that makes any sense.

My plan so far besides boost and obvious paint and rust repair. Is suspension, Watanabe 16'' maybe 9 or 9.5 wide wheels, 240z front and rear bumpers, AC, and flares. Thats why I want coilovers, for lower stance, adjustability and extra wheel well space. Just trying to reach out to you guys and especially some Florida Z guys. Trying to find a starting point somewhere.

If anything I can send  texts to anyone if they want to see pics of the car too. But really looking for some guidance and some FL guys. Thanks for reading.
