Datsun 510 White Needle Tachometer looped white wire missing... NEED HELP!!!

Recommended Posts

Hey Ratsun! i'm lost here... i have a white needle tach that i'm trying to wire up but i seem to be missing the looped white wire that goes in series with the coil's negative lead. can anyone tell me the fix for this? i really don't wanna resort to an aftermarket tach. i'd like to keep it "stock". thanks!

thanks rpowell. i made a loop today and the tach works now BUT it's reading too high. some say i need to install a 1K resistor in series with the coil wire. tried it but no joy... continuing on with the research...

Well, the tach is designed to read 2 pulses per revolution because it's a 4-cylinder tach.  A VG, being a 6-cyl,  has 3 pulses per revolution.  So the tach will read 50% too high.  You can adjust it, but that far?  I don't know.

Wiring a resistor does nothing, or at worst makes it read nothing or make it extremely erratic due to weak signal..  The tach is inductive and reads pulses.  Voltage/current is irrelevant to the tach signal wire.   You'd need a logic counter that reads 3 pulses and turns them into 2.

It will not work with the 6 cylinder.

You can get a tach from a Z or ZX and take it apart and retrofit it into the 510 tach housing.

Read that article I shared in the post above and it will show you what to do.
