FireFighterZach
Hello gents, first ill start with the boring intro of my self then ill get to the god stuff, the oics. My name is Zachary Ripley, I'm 20, im a volunteer Firefighter/EMT. and i am a car nut. this started quite awhile back, i went to church with a buddy of mine and i met Atom Church, he talked about his datsun and never hearing of a datsun i looked it up. from the start i was hooked i loved the look, but i didn't have a license. fast forward a couple years i got my license and looking for a datsun 510 i stumbled on to a 65 volvo which turned me to a gear head, since then i have had 3 other volvos. 2 Volkswagens, and two BMWs. being strictly a euro guy i stopped my search for a datsun 510 awhile ago. i built a BMW e30 and one day on facebook i say a pic of my old love a dime. so i tossed it up for sale, two week later(last night) i got my first datsun. 1971 (8/70) 510 goon. with LB20 swap. here is what i started with car came with 15x7 centerline reps (on test fitted in front) the grill and rear bumper has been painted by PO body damage is that fender and the lower front valence dat ass dirty motor A/C and i think a header(?) only bad part of head liner poor little goon i found in the car the chrome grill surroundings. one is a littel damaged needs some carpet Quote Link to comment
FireFighterZach
but there was some good things like a crack free dash so i started cleaning the interior to clean the dash but not wanting it to crack i used leather cream for leather seats. worked on my clean dash on my bmw. i also used it on the dash. and then the trunk (if this isnt the factory mat let me know cause ill take it out) next i cleaned the door cards and door frames i realize i didn't get a pic of the drivers door card but its the same haha and the back seat, its in great shape! the front seats are unknown, not fan though, im gonna swap bmw e30 seats in the are the same style leather and the are molded after recaros. very comfy. so these will be for free if anyone is interested they can PM me dibs, might be a little bit before they come out though and the paint..... some one in the past re-sprayed over the factory(?) paint same color but they did a awful job, and not only was it oxidized to hell, but it was flaking in random spots. they say you cant polish a turd, but you sure can a goon. before 2012-12-13 10.48.31 by Photos by Zachary, on Flickr after side by side i used rubbing compound, then some random pink shit( said polish on it) then wax to seal it after working all day i got only the hood, fenders, and valence here are the results then i took apart the grill and put in all the grill surrounding on and the final touch more to come feel free to ask questions thanks guys Quote Link to comment

Laecaon
Hey, did you have a white Volvo 122 (I dont remember 4dr vs 2dr...)? 2 Junes ago I was driving north on I5, I catch a glimpse of a 122, speed up, and get over to my exit (HWY 217), 122 saw me pass him, and caught back up to me, and the 122 driver and I exchanged thumbs ups. I was in my white wagon. Anyways, yay a goon stays in the family! 1 Quote Link to comment
FireFighterZach
I have a 2dr but around that time it had a Swedish flag roof and wood panel on the side haha. Quote Link to comment

FireFighterZach
a little update, i started by working on the horns, found that they didnt work, traced them to the horn and found that they where shot but the wires where all good so i started to pull them but all 4 screws stripped. i have some 1970s horns that look really cool that i tested today and they work great so i will keep trying to get the old ones out and swap in the new ones i also kept up the buffing and got the roof done today heres the oics first i pull the roof rack. this is what was growing under the rack. then i washed the roof and got all that moss/dirt/ect. off and then i buffed and buffed and buffed. took around three hours to get the roof to this.... 2012-12-14 15.13.30 by Photos by Zachary, on Flickr i still have about 55% left to buff, but i am getting closer. i still got electrical things i got to work out and more but i have no cash flow right now so this updates will be mainly getting this ol' bitch shiney! also i will be putting the A/C kit up for sale (taking offers) and the 15x7 Sendel centerline reps up of sale/trade let me know thanks  Quote Link to comment

banzai510(hainz)
I seen this car on here before I think. Some looser kids mom made him get rid of it.this is a cool wagoon.I would have taped off and spray can the fender where the bondo is. over time it will match up. Lower this and call it good. motor bay looks clean. You got a good rig there read everything on olddatsuns.com 20 years old and had that many cars? This means you wont have this one long either Quote Link to comment
hobbes_the_cat
I'm glad you are doing this car right. I told that kid that used to have it not to bondo that fender but he obviously didn't listen. I doubt he preped it right, maybe it will flake off? BTW I'm pretty sure that rear cargo mat is factory and im not sure but the front seats might be civic seats. That is a fairly common swap. Quote Link to comment
FireFighterZach
Thanks guys. I have had a lot of cars but I have always wanted a Datsun, the only reason I was thinking of selling my last bimmer(which is the seconded longest car I have owned) was because the only thing I could really do with it any more was a motor swap and motor swaps for bmws are $$$$$$$$$$ to be done right. I also started with cars from the 60s and tried newer Cars and never muched liked it, so I'm back in what I love. As long as this stays a project I'll keep her, the minute I get bored and be comes just a car is when I get rid of them. I am on the look for some matching spray paint for the fender it's a eye sore. Yeah the bondo is all over this car in Random stupid holes like the rack was moved forward because it would smack the hatch and the holes looked like they where just bondo in. Old mirror holes.....bondo, some one got a little bondo happy but slowly I'll go through and weld them all shut the right way. Mainly I'm trying to do the car right once it's all clean and running great here is my list in the order I want to do it Suspention: I want poly. Bushings all around, new tie rods, sway bar end links ect. While doing that I'll start looking for 280z struts and start making coil overs, I'm gonna go 2in block in the rear, and Monroe air shocks Brakes: I would like to do disc all around but at the least get what I can upgraded Seals: I plan on buying all new seals I want this baby almost air tight I cant stand wet carpet Interior: I want e30 Recaros (already have one) and new carpet. I want to sound proof the best I can as well. Exterior: maybe fender mirrors....? I like the stock look other than that Motor: down the road I would like a ka24de swap but the L is working fine now so it's not a big concern for me Paint: kinda the last thing, Im getting this paint to shine up nice so it's not a huge priority for me. Along the way I would like some nice old jdm wheels but my main concern it's to make it my DD. Thanks again Quote Link to comment
FireFighterZach
I doubt he preped it right,.To the best of my knowledge from the looks of it he got it really really hot them put bondo on. The paint is burn around it but it looks straight Quote Link to comment

FireFighterZach
if cant affors to fix a 510 why buy a BMW cant afford to fix I'm looking at a BMW that would not need fixing, one that I could just drive. And chances are I will be fixing it here next week because I will have the funds. I'm not to sure about heads, or what lash pads do(I will be googling it tonight) but the top hat of the spring has a flat spot alittle off centered (ill take pics) so that is what I conclude, there is a chance I am wrong , but I was on the side of the road with little tools and light. I'm needing a car to drive to school and work, which is more important than keeping a dream car, but there is a chance I can have a BMW for far driving and keep working with the goon. I'll be pulling the head Friday Quote Link to comment
