How to fix an Outer Window Squeegee cheap!

Recommended Posts

NOT THE HANG-510 METHOD!!!

That can be found here btw http://forum.ratsun.net/showthread.php?t=3234&highlight=Window+Squeegee

This is great cus you wont have to pay 112.95 for a set at Datsun restore and it will cost less than 10 dollars plus it wont scratch the glass anymore...

Ok... This is what you do...

First find a 4runner years 91-95 and look if it has the rear door

Once you find this SUV with the 3.SLOW look for the rear window squeegee... "you will need two"

Here is my suv for an example...

Second remove that squeegee with some pliers and be careful not to rip it.

Third buy it cus it wont fit in your pocket and or bend it.

Forth take it home and cut to fit...

Here are some finished examples...

i also have taken the trim off an early 300zx. it is close to perfect length for a 2dr, it was a task to trim for 4dr or wagon.

used was a little loose but a new pc should fit tite.

i have it on my sedan and it works well.

:w00t:

 for any alternative!

To any one who has done this.

Do you just put the clips on this new rubber, or do you use the metal strip that the clips are on? This new one seems stiff enough without that metal piece.

I've been bored and broke lately. I wanted to fix my Dime's outer window squeegees. However the 510's squeegees are embedded in a piece of metal trim. I don't have the scratch to buy a new set, So I set about figuring it out on a Ratsun budget! First I took my old squeegees off and figured out how they were built: The outer stainless trim piece with a piece of squeegee rubber sandwiched with a piece of steel(not stainless) glued and stapled together:

So I took it apart as gently as I could:

I went to the hardware store and found some cheap but quality rubber squeegee material for a screen door that had close to the same squeegee wiper depth +/- $3

It had some extra ridges on the back so I cut them down/off to flush like so:

Sanded the backing plate of steel to clean off the rust:

Then I sandwiched the squeegee with the backing plate and drilled out the old staple holes a tiny bit bigger. I had some TINY little picture framing nails and I used them like a hand bent staple. Basically sandwich it together, hold it with a small clamp, drill out the holes, drop the nails through & bend them over like a staple. Pics:

After that I used some epoxy on a toothpick to the underside of the nails to make sure they don't work themselves out with vibration. I just put a dab or two on where I bent the nails to hold them together/in place. After the epoxy cured I put some fresh paint on to protect the backing plate and make them nice and shiny!

Snapped them back on my doors and VIOLA! Work better then alot of other squeegees I have seen brand new! Total cost was around $10 for paint, epoxy, and the squeegee material!

I wont tell you it was fun to do but it fits the Ratsun budget and how often do you get to use nails on your car ;)

I cut off the the two ridges by my thumb, So it formed a upside down L shape. I found that material at a local 'Sebos do-it center' Which I doubt there are many left! I'm thinking just about any quality rubber with a squeegee lip will work. Shit after reading something about using windshield wiper blades, They would probably work great pinched in there! I'll try to track down the compatible parts and post them up!

Necro thread rising. Thanks for all the great info.  I am trying to figure out the best method to repair/replace my interior and exterior ones.  I believe [2edeye said the taiwan stuff sucks... So... looks like I may mod some of my own.
