Factory center console doesn't fit

Recommended Posts

Bought a factory console and received it in the mail today. My car is a 1970 4 door, manual. I was told this would fit. Tried to install and the shifter will not line up with the console at all. The console is all the way up against the heater box that is under the dash but this thing is nowhere close to falling into place.

I have noticed that some 510's have the oval shifter hole in the floor while others are round. Mine is the oval.

Any help?

Thanks,

I dont think the console would slide under the heater, if it were double insulated/thicker carpet

more of pointing in the right direction/brain-storm on my end :D

you guys are the 510 experts not me ..

I have no real clue what's going on haha !

DTP OUT !!! *Farts and Scoot's away*

Sigh. Whoever had that cut the hole in a different place. If you did not get it as a car option. they came un-cut, so whoever cut it must of had a longer transmission due to a different motor. Or your car has a different transmission. Ill take a pic of mine to show you where it should be cutted at, or the area yours is needing.

I am thinking the same thing, maybe someone picked up a nos one(uncut) at some point, and cut it for a zx 5spd

PICS Ours are cut in WAY different locations. My suggestion is cut it up higher, then save that plastic, see if you can find a big enough shift boot to cover that entire hole. If not take the left over plastic you cut, shape it to same size as the left over hole, find a plastic welder, flip it over, and have it done up to fit. U will notice a lil difference in looks but looks better than a giant hole. Yours is cut right abouv the datsun logo is supposed to go. the shift layout plate should be where yours is cut at.

THANKS! This explanation makes total sense now. I was unaware that these came uncut! I know for a fact my car is 100% original as far as motor/trans and it being a manual. The hole in my console is cut much closer to the arm rest compared to the one in the photo you posted.

No I need to figure what I am going to do with this thing?!?!

I made a panel that sat down in the long "cavity" to cover the old shifter hole. In other words, cut a panel out of masonite (just like the door panels & kick panels, available at any Lowes, Home Depot etc) to fit the full length of that dropped down cavity, wrapped it in black vinyl, cut a new hole that matched the location of your shifter (4spd, ZX 5spd etc), came up with a nice shifter boot, and made sure that the console itself was secured to the trans tunnel (that's another story, cuz those flimsy dealer optional AMCO consoles were made out of stupid thin moulding injected plastic, that easily broke at the screw holes over time!).

I know this post is old so sorry for bumping it back up, but really hoping someone has a good pic of the shift layout plate...i have the plate on my '72 2dr. but it needs a mild reconditioning and i haven't been able to find a clean pic of how it looked from factory. Any help would be stellar! Since my console is old and almost ready to fall apart I'm going to make a fiberglass mold and make a new one off the old factory one ...at least i can paint match that to whatever i choose for interior color
