l20b Exhaust manifold de smog

Anyone ever de smog an l20b exhaust Manifold? Those little fittings are stubborn and I can't seem to get them off for anything

i welded them shut and the heat from welding loosened them up so i spun them out and put brass plugs in it looks much cleaner

Well i haven't tried heat yet.i was afraid of catcking them on fire haha I've soaked them in every kind or penitrating crap with no luck yet. I can't figure out what size wrench fits either. I tried metric and stanard

Maybe you should try a standard size wrench...

tried standard too. my mechanic buddy tried every size he had. Almost ready to use a pipe wrench haha

Actually, that's exactly what I would use - a pipe wrench.

The hardware store probably has exhaust plugs as well. Take one down and match it up, and screw them in.

 

They can be buggers, that's for sure.

That's exactly what i plan on doing and after that I'll work on deleting the rest of the vacume stuff from the smog equipment. Have to wait till I get payed friday tho.... broke again. So for now i'll give it a bath and work on cleaning up the motor a bit

That's what I like to hear.

I hate working on dirty engines. Mine is almost spic-n-span, and my L20B was rarely ever greasy. I had a nasty leak on the front inspection plate, and a leaky rear main seal (getting fixed next couple of days so I can the L20B in my truck!)... nothing is worse than getting greasy on something that should be nice and oil-less!

You and I are on the same level. Poor, but still trying to do work... Engine bay clean up is all I can do haha.

Haha glad to hear i'm not the only one working with a low budget. That's what I like about ratsun, we love our datsuns but nobody is down on you for makin due with what you have. My 620 may be a rusty terd but it's a datsun haha

Looks like what I'm lookin for. Any clue on the size and thread count? I wanna do some lookin before I pull one.

I bought those years ago. Took one of the air injectors in to a hardware store and matched the threads. Pretty sure it's a metric pipe thread.... something that might be hard to find in the states.

 

If you want to heat it up and try to loosen, just run the motor. I think you will find the injectors very soft metal. One of mine squashed trying to get it off. They are a bitch to get a socket on with the carb in place. Also the injector pipe is quite long and reaches down into the port.

I guess if it comes down to it I can find the right size metric bolt and shorten it to fit. I'll make it work, I've tried to get them off after the engine was hot before but they're pretty stuck but I'm stubborn so I'll find a way

Bolt and pipe threads are different I think. Worth a try.

I know a hardware store where I can pretty much find any thread count I want. Haven't been disappointed yet

Your looking for BSPT (British Standard Pipe Tapered). Try a local hydraulic hose maker.

 

The bloody difference between American and British Pipe is one thread per inch. If all else fails a brass pipe plug will conform to fit.

The problem with this is the 3-4" of pipe sticking down into the exhaust ports. Might as well remove any and all obstructions.
