fabricators!!!! welding q's

Recommended Posts

hey guys. i am seriousley looking for a new welder.

Our body shop has the millermatic 212 W/auto set. Which i love that feature. local napa has it for $1800. plus tank and spool

my snap on dealer, has the mm 250sl. seems like a good welder. no auto set feature. but has the capabilities of tig welding. Dont know a whole lot about tig, but i want to learn. He says there tig torches do not have a frequency box? So you can only tig mild steel.... this just seems dumb. It also has the portable section, so you can use in weird areas. not needed for me though/ and is not a selling point. This runs, after instant rebate, about $2660.00

now my problem.... i got approved for the snap on. i could have it next week. As he comes every thursday, and has one in stock at his wharehouse at home. which is about 150 miles away. The miller on the other hand, i would have to pay out cash. which i do not have lol

i will have this at home in my garage. i want to really start working hard on the datsun. And a good welder is holding me back.

Snap on welders used to be made buy century and sold for huge profit. I think lincon bought the century brand. I'm not familiar with the Snap on welders. Theirs nothing more frustrating than learning to weld on a mig machine that runs like crap! Its hard to beat the miller and OG lincon welders. If i was you I'd look into taking it for a test drive and find out what kinda consumables it uses including liners, tips, nozzles, rollers, etc, so later on down the road you dont have to pay out the ass for "snap on" packaged consumables that may just be standard lincon stuff you can order online or your local welding store will have. As far as tig welding goes its a great process but has its short comings too. Having both is great i will admit, but if for most general welding a mig welder is alot more user friendly.

They self adjust for what your welding and they work quite well in their power range as long as you have the recomended gas and diameter wire in it.

I guess that would come in handy.

And if you are trying to spot weld/tack, does it fight you?

I ask because most of the welding I do is tack welding on sheet metal, and I have found any mig will do that with no issues.

I have also come to the conclusion that flux core wire works the best also when tacking, but maybe that is because I do most my welding outside.
