Bye Bye Black Sheep :) Going from Black to White...

Recommended Posts

Well the Datsun has been under the knife a lot this year, so after i recently dropped the motor off at the machine shop I thought why not take advantage of the time off the road to give the dime some much needed cosmetic attention.. I have been through every inch of the drivetrain, interior, electronics and wiring .. but have always left the body work for "another time" .. that time is now.

Here is how it looks up until now, the body is straight but the PO must have been wasted or in a huge hurry when they did the body work before spraying it flat black.. The whole car needs a good block sanding to flatten everything out .

The taillight panel suffered a similar treatment from whoever put in the bluebird tails definetly the worst section of the car by far... i almost picked up a replacement panel but after having our friend scott over at fleet autobody check it out he gave it the green light for an easy fix without replacement.. its a shame really that someone had such disregaurd for the car when doing some of the work..

Rear dismantle

I dont have a huge number of pics from the teardown .. But basically i pulled the whole interior, gutted the doors, pulled all the glass pulled the fuel system out of the trunk removed all trim, bumpers, lights, all the weatherstripping completely gutted the engine bay and pulled all the wiring back into the cab.

And this it how it sits now...

I have a few more things to do before bringing it into the paintshop, the plan is to have it in their capable hands by this time next week.

As far as color goes, I have always wanted to paint it white, in fact the car was originally white .. (not sure the paint code) but I would like to paint it an off white or ivory. If i can keep the paint an original datsun color I will def go that route but am not going tie myself down to those being my only choices... if the car was 100% original id be more worried about it...

I have found Mfg Paint # 502 "ivory white" which came on early roadsters that is similar to what im shooting for.. but I havent been able to find a lot of pictures of that color.. id really like to be able to see the color i choose in person on a car..

This car is pretty cool. I like the orange engine bay with the black body. I've got a friend with the Ivory White colour on his roadster. You'd have to come to Utah to see it in person, but I could find and post some pictures for you when I get home later on today.

Wow, Looks great Colbino... Indeed they are going to look similar, Although im not 100% on 904 yet .. its in the list of paint colors I provided to the shop.. but we are going to meet again before i have them start spraying after all the bodywork is done.. It does look really nice on your dime ..

I might go with something a bit more off white, creme-ish .. like pepper white. still undecided.

Dude, that is cool! Also, you need to save me a Blu808 sticker mang!! It's the only one I don't have.

I have Jeffs sticker but Luke never gave me one...

Thanks! I got an endless supply of blu808 stickers... I get you some next time we meet .. I also got the vector graphic and a vinyl cutter.. thats what i used on the valve cover.. so can pretty much make any size..

Just do matte white haha. I've thought about re-doing my 200SX SE-R in a flat white or a dark smoke gray. The valve cover is badass!

I have thought about Matte as well .. they look cool but i hear the maintenance is a pain on satin finishes.. and white.. I can only assume that makes it that much more of a pain....

So you can make pretty much any logo you want as long as you have the right file?

What file does it take?

Yeah I can make anything up to about 1ft by 2 ft .. my vinyl cutter is a small format desktop type.. If you need anything bigger I have a buddy who can do huge stuff... as far as file type It needs to be a .svg (scalable vector graphic)

Dude, while you are at it, you should put your vents back in!

That is one of a 510's Hallmark features!!

Seriously, it wouldn't be hard at all! But NOW would be the time to do it before it's painted!!!!

If you do decide to do it, I have a set of Metal ones I'd sell you and you can have them rechromed!

I had thought about it.. but I think im going to leave the vents shaved.. The shop said they could do it no problem. but instead of paying someone to do it i would have rather done it myself before sending it in.

I hear a little lazyness yer voice... hahaha jk

White with some nice vents would kill...
