Irs 210?

Recommended Posts

I got an orange 80 2-door 210. I want to put independant rear suspension in it. Is there a way to do this easily? Im a Mopar man in search of better gas mileage and have alwayse had a soft spot for the 210 and especially the B-210. So I'm a Newbie. I want to do the suspension before the engine so any help would be greatly appreciated:)

Thanks

Dave

There is no easy way to adapt IRS to a 210 (or any car for that matter). IRS doesn't give better gas mileage either, btw. The small A series engine and 5 speed that are stock in the b210 give excellent gas mileage.

I have had 2 B-210s and just left them stock. I want to do things with this one. I plan on taking my time and mostly workin on it in the winter. So I am not worried about difficulty, I was just wondering what would be the right years to get parts off of. And if there were any tricks of the brand I should know about. It has the 1200cc and a 4speed. I want a big 4 but that wont be till later.

Honestly, I do not recommend the IRS. 510 IRS takes a lot of money to correct the shortcomings of the stock setup. In the end, they are almost a live axle. I'd stick with the live axle and focus on other stuff..

Thanks for the input. I have a 95 Mercury Grand Marquis with a 4-link and I love the way it performs. So I was also thinking of beefing up the rearend and doing that setup. I suppose I could search around and find this out but I figure you will know. What year struts will most easily swap and what do I have to do?

What about a L20 and a 5 speed? Will it fit? Do I have to make mounts? And what year? What year did they go to fuel injection?

An L20B 5spd in a 210 would go! No, it won't fit. Yes it can be made to fit, actually anything can be made to fit if you use a big enough hammer. The mounts are nowhere near the same so you'll have to make them. Driveshaft will have to be shortened.

Any '75 on L20B would work, personally I would use the '78 and '79 620 and the '80 720 ones. You might find and try a first gen 200sx L20B, they were sporty and the one I found had a P-nut head and a HD 3 core rad on it. The EI ignition was also available on these years too.

If you have to have EFI, the first year that I can think of, that Nissan used it on a 2 liter, was when they redesigned the L20B into the Z20E in the '80 200sx. If you find a runner get the tranny to match the motor and the rear axle, as it's a H 165 with disc brakes. The '82 and '83 had the Z22 motor. A third gen 200sx has a CA20E and an optional CA18ET, a real tire roaster! They also went back to IRS in '84?

Thanks for the help guys. I am new to this whole Datsun thing. I have the mechanical knowledge but lack the datsun/small car stuff. I have alwayse loved Datsun cars and hope to do cool things to this one. I need a left fender and driver door so if you know anyone with some 80 210 panels, let me know.

Thanks

Dave

If you 4-linked it with coilovers it would be much easier, and handle just as well, as if you converted to IRS.

Not true at all, IRS will always handle better than a live axle. You must think of the suspension geometry, and the tread contact when cornering.

To answer your question, if you really want IRS, look into a second gen RX7 rear suspension. Many mini truckers use this setup on their minis, and their are plenty of aftermarket suspension pieces for them. Im not sure of the width on the 210, but the axle can be narrowed on the RX7 rear and the arms can be too. It all depends on what you feel your up to.

Looks like Im gonna be spending lots of time at Pull-A-Part with my tape measure. I was thinking that if I had to I could cut the whole rear frame out of the donor car and trim out the 210 to match. I know it will be a pain in the ass, but it is all pretty simple stuff. Just gotta make sure it all lines up.

I want to know why the HL510 crossmember won't fit. They came with the L motor, I think that is where you should start. Before you start fabing parts just see if you can steel everything from a HL510. Doug would know the years that might work. I read a suspension article that said back in the trans am series the live axle cars handed just as good as the IRS cars, they said it had a lot to do with the tracks being so smooth that suspension wasn't as critical.

I think IRS is over rated!!!!!

They just lool COOL when lowered and get that camber going

Put some Konis adjustable shocks if they make them for a 210 and a sway bar and youll be happy. Believe me!!!!!!! try Addco for the sway bars.

That is a nice 210 One of the Better ones. Hate for you to start something and then say Fuck it. Its too much work. Its alot of work to get what? A 510 in desguise, you could get for 500$ somewhere in back of yard under a tree.

I would just polish it up and put some nice Panasports on there. and maybe find a way to put a L20 in there. It would be cool to put a rotary motor in there before waisting time on a IRS suspension.

Mazda RX2, 3 ,4s and early RX7s still one alot of races with straight axles

Ask Jeff's Brother on his 521 project. The Get up and Go(Motivation) has got up and went!!!!!!!I have not seen a IRS conversion personally. I have heard alot of TALK aout it. But never seen one besides a Dude in Austraila did one o a 510 which was very intensive.Dont get over your head

I dont want a 510 in disguise. If I do any stuff like that I will put 68 barracuda nose and tail on it. And I also hate the cambered in wheels, it makes the car look broaken lowered or not! I am about to get a set of 14in pollished sloted mags for it. I love the B-210 and the 210, 2 door ONLY! I bought this gem for $300 and want to do some SCCA (Rally/Road) racing with it maby next year. I have plenty of mechanical know how, and want an ongoing project. Just looking for what would be the easiest. I am pretty sure that the Z cars and my 210 are about as wide as each other and I am also fairly sure that IRS is better than live axle. I am not making a Lowrider, I want a performance car. I also want to keep it all Datsun/Nissan.

The IRS system has a lower unsprung weight than a solid rear axle, allowing the lighter mass wheel and drive shaft to remain in contact with an uneven surface better, but that's about it. By the time you add a sway bar, stiffer springs, stiffer shocks, stiffer bushings you might as well have a solid rear axle anyway, so if you have one, stay with it. If your car came with IRS then work with that. If you are bound and determined to go IRS, do it after you swap in an L20B, transmission, brake and suspension up grades first, and have time to experiment.

I bought a new '76 B 210 back in the day and the best thing I did for it was to replace the bias tires with radials. Lowering the center of gravity is also a good idea to enhance handling.

I did a little digging and found mention of 'newer' Stanza and maybe first gen 200sx struts being used. Also 'newer' 310 discs and rotors. Try the Datsun 1200 club and ask some q's. I have a second gen 200sx and they have solid axle w/disc brakes on the back.

Thank you so mutch for the info! I live at the top of a real fun hill and drive the datsun all week to work and junk. (The Merc is for the weekends.) I can have fun on the hill but I want it too be faster on the uphill and really perform. I hope to be able to enter some SCCA road coarse and rally racing in a couple years, so it has to be done right.

So I looked under the rear of my Pumpkin and low and behold it has a 4-link in it already! All I need to do is beef it all up and it will be all I need. The rear diff is kinda sloppy so I will start there. I wonder if they sell springs for it cause it has little coils on the rear.

I have an '80 and an '81 200sx and they also have the coil spring/link rear end too, so keep your eyes peeled for one of these 2nd generation cars. It might be a nice little up-grade for the 210. All I can tell you is it's an H 165 B with 3.70 gears and disc brakes. The disc brakes are in demand for use on the 510s

Does that mean I have a 2nd generation frame car? So the rearend from a like year 200sx will swap? And the springs? Cause for now I cut like 1 coil out of the front and got about 2 in of drop and it still has plenty of suspension. If I can do a rearend swap and buy some springs for a 200sx I'll be set!
