Local Disk Y

Recommended Posts

Okay, so I've only just started seeing this. In the file manager on Windows 7, a local disk "y" will show up. Can't click on it, nothing on it. I searched the net and see lots of instances of it happening, but quite a few varied responses. Disappeared yesterday after I restarted the laptop. It's back again today. Any ideas?

Looks like this:

Go to device manager in the control panel to see if it says anything about it..

I was just using ubuntu for the longest time, and Just yesterday I just reinstalled 7 into my pc lol.

I know that before I installed unbuntu on my PC, it would show all the USB and SATA positions, even though some were not connected to anything or being used.

It's probably a card reader drive (or similar) that was previously plugged in but has a software bug so it occasionally appears even when not plugged in.

I wouldn't worry about it. I doubt if it is malware, but to be safe, run a anti-malware scan to ease your mind.

If you want to investigate further, create the registry String in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Environment

DEVMGR_SHOW_NONPRESENT_DEVICES

and give it a value of "1"

Reboot. You will see in Device Manager devices which have been installed but which may not be plugged in at the moment. Then you can manually delete it. It probably won't be under Disks.
