Just joined and wanted to say whats up to everybody. Been a datto fan for a while and I've had my '72 for a few years. I'd say that it defineatly fits the Ratsun style...hopefully not for much longer though.

Welcome Duke! Info on your car??

Some info...

sss jdm L-18 with tuna can SU's, nismo header, nothing special, peppy little motor.

Suspension (what I really like):

Front:280zx struts with Porche 911 koni inserts, coilovers, 300# springs, custom camber/caster plates, 1 1/8" sway bar, etc...

Rear:1100# springs, "special" shocks, adjustable x-member, solid x-member mounts.

Alot of other stuff like custom roll bar, seat mounts, gas tank...

And really crappy looking paint and body!

Suspension is my favorite to :D

So for a daily how does it ride? After the big discussion on the realm it seems like high lbs springs with less dampening shouldn't be to bad on the street. I have 185 lbs springs in the front with VW inserts WAY to soft in the rear I have 300lbs coilovers, they are the T3 ones, the adjustable dampening does nothing. I think they kinda suck but I'm going to try them with lighter springs and a rear bar. I guess overall I just want to know what you would do different if anything, thanks :D

I like the no bumper look to, I'm going the same route.

The springs in the back aren't bad at all. I would say that I am running about the same rear wheel rate as you in the back, and I think its about perfect. I used to run a rear bar and softer springs which had about the same roll rate as the setup that I have now but the major downfall was how bad the suspension geometry is with a 510. Because of the excessive toe change, as little movement as possible (especially when cornering) was what I was going for. I have even heard of racers running solid struts in the rear to do away with any movement at all (and any toe change that this causes). I had some long messages with Keith (Bertvorogon from the realm) about this and the sugestions that he had really worked out well. I haven't auto-x yet, but I will be doing a few soon so that will help me really dial in the setup.

From what I have heard from people alot of the 510 rear coilover kits are overdampened. I was considering getting some coilovers for the availablity of springs, but I ended up going the way I did because of the shocks. Plus, I don't really see the point in coilovers unless you are going to corner weight the car.

So what would I do different...well, I don't really know. I'm kinda a young buck so I'm still learning...if I change anything I will let you know. I came to the setup I have now by talking to other people, so I haven't really personalized it yet.

And as for the no bumper thing, I think we both fell in love with the same 510 back in the day...blue turbo rotary in sport compact car???

That is so true, I had this as my back round for so long!!

I want my 68 to have some of the same stylings :D

As for the suspension I feel the same way, I've owned a few 510's but still haven't found my "personal" settings yet. I had one dime with a rear bar and it would get sideways in a second. I never autoX, from back road driving I realized I wanted rack and pinion. I guess part of it was comparing my s13 to my 510's. This really got me reading on suspension, and I guess what got me more interested in forums. I even bought some suspension books :D I couldn't understand why the steering on a basically stock s13 was so tight compared to my 510 with quite a few suspension mods. I kinda wish I would have kept the 510 cross member and done a rack setup on it, I could of fit better offset wheels that way.. better looking anyways :D I feel if I built customish suspension again (which I do have planned for my 1200 in the future) I could really build something nice :D I sure love my 510's though. I really need to get mine on the road soon!!!

P.S how old are you?

I would be interested to see some pics of the front crossmember setup that you made. From what I remember from the realm, you basically grafted the front crossmember of a 200sx onto a 510. In tearms of basic suspension geometry, I would have to say that the wider track would be a very beneficial thing because it allows you to run wide, high offset wheels. The bigger the lip on the wheel, the more it will wonder under breaking. But yeah, I agree, big lips look cool, thats why I have rewinds.

In regards to the tightness of the 510 steering, I found that with a properly adjusted steering box, and some good steering box braces, it makes a BIG difference in the feel...not quite new car good, but way better than what it was.

As for my age, I'm 21, so I guess I'm not that young.

Hey Duke - what did it take to get the rewinds to fit in the fenders? I like them...

Well, to get them to fit the fenders were rolled and the rear inner fender was massaged a little. Also you need 280zx struts with camber plates. I was running about 3.5 degrees in front and an unmodified crossmember in the rear. Still with this the fronts rubbed in tight turns. FYI I am running 205-50-15 rubber, I have heard that they fit better under stock fenders with 195's

To get them to fit RIGHT I have slightly flared the front fenders. By doing this I have been able to run anywhere from 2-3 degrees of camber without rubbing. In the rear I cut out half of the inner fender and made a kind of "mini-tub", if you have read the trans-am section of the how to modify book, that is basically what I copied. I also slightly flared the rear fenders and I am now able to run about 2 degrees of rear camber.

Fitting wheels on a 510 is a challenge in it self. I tried the ZX arms on the rear of my dime, I heard they fit. They do but the toe seems to be way off. The shock/coilover perch is way higher, with my coilovers its still a stomper. The wheels I want are a 4/5 lug universal, they are at fairlady motors and I think they would fit perfect. If I could find the center caps they would be sick! I would love to fit 205's all the way around.

Adjusting the steering box does help, on the car I had it was a little to late :( for most of the front suspension. Its funny how s12 suspension with 200,000 + on it can be better than 510 suspension with about the same amount of miles. I did basically just graft it onto a 510, through all my research I found that newer cars were basically just setup better. Like the s13 is set up like a "streetish" or "mild" 510 is setup. Thus the nice handling s13 with just drop springs. I want to build dual A arms for my next suspension project. I want to fit 225 under the front of a dime, that would be nice :D

When I talked to Steve E about the ZXT rear control arms he told me setting them up is simply a matter of how you make your rear crossmember. So, you can move the wheel in or out, etc by where you place the mounting points. Doing a pentultimate makes this seem pretty straight forward.
