Marshallxharris
I haven't had time to check because I have to go to work but mine has had the ignition light on for the past week (wasn't sure if it had kicked into life or not) anyway, is it like it suggests above bad alternator earth? I'll look in more detail tonight. Quote Link to comment
EastBay521
So instead of starting a new thread ill add to this one. One day I was on my way to a fellow members place and when I started my truck up to leave my ing. light was on, so I got out took the ground off of the battery and sure enough it wasn't charging so I said fuck it and decided to drive it home on battery but would charge when I higher rpm's. My truck had 74k original miles so I swapped the alt. figuring its original aswell. Doesn't solve my problem so I put a new voltage regulator I had from my first truck and that doesn't fix it either so I throw a brand new regulator one at it and still not charging. Only now everytime I turn the ignition on it instantly blows the fuse for the gauge cluster. I was told something about there is a resistor or something behind the cluster that has to do with the charging system?maybe that may have something to do with the fuse blowing and not charging? any input would be appreciated. kelowg
The ign light bulb acts as the resistor. Thats all i know of. For the aftermarket gauges i replace bulb with resistor and charges fine, but its internal.reg alt. Quote Link to comment
EastBay521
But would that cause the fuse going when I turn the ignition on? im not finding any chafed wires or any making contact that they shouldn't be Quote Link to comment
banzai510(hainz)
mine did this it was the connection in back of gauge cluster. I just reseat it an then it was fine is its a corrossion weak connection issue 1 Quote Link to comment
kelowg
Maybe u got wrong volt reg. Wire postions r different between models i think. But bout impossible trace wiring for reg being they dont define the what ea wire does Quote Link to comment
EastBay521
Possibly.but when i put the old regulator back on it still did the same thing.and would the cluster have anything todo with the charging system? Quote Link to comment
banzai510(hainz)
I swapped the alt and VR also. my ignition light came on as normal then START Fuse would pop. then NO light. find out there is no 12volts to energize the alternator thru the plastic T connector. so I clean the fuse box cled in back of the instrument cluster put connector back on then it worked Quote Link to comment
EastBay521
My fuse goes out as soon as I turn the ignition on but ill try that when I get home Quote Link to comment
kelowg
I think u could bypass the cluster. There is a pin out for cluster plug somewhere on here. Put a bulb or correct resistor(300ohm?) Across wires goin to and from cluster bulb location. Quote Link to comment
banzai510(hainz)
if it worked before then its a corrossion issue if no elelctrical was fucked with usually a high resisitive short 1 Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
The 521 fuse box is well exposed to the weather and often the cover is missing. Record the wire locations and remove and clean. Soak overnight in a mixture of vinegar and lemon juice, rinse well, dry and put back in. Clean the wire ends also. 2 Quote Link to comment
EastBay521
Nothing was fucked with.ill take the fuse box out tonight and let it soak Quote Link to comment
EastBay521
Its soaking Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
It might fizz slightly. You can clean with an old tooth brush also. Actually if it's oil covered this should be washed off first. Quote Link to comment
