q-tip
Its a very strange issue you're having.....strange indeed.... Quote Link to comment
Trophy24
Hmm. need to somehow divide this problem and follow the symptoms. Carbs don't care what gear you are in, but might have fuel starvation after a period of time under load if the fuel line can't keep up for some reason. Does it still bog down when you downshift into 2nd after the symptom is present? Does this car have ignition retard in 3rd gear as an emission control? Quote Link to comment

carterb
I know. :crying: All my pictures are on http://www.datsun510.com/photopost/index.php http://datsun510.com which has been down for months now. It's supposedly almost back up... I'm holding out because it will be a huge job to rebuild all my threads if I have to move my pictures somewhere else. --carter Quote Link to comment

carterb
Trouble has been in the back ground for the last three years and now took a step even farther back - I traded positions between it and the Rice Wagon in an effort to get the wagon running and on the road. Last year it gave up its Recaros to Cooper Getting Coopers stock seats in the process You'll have to read about that swap in Cooper's build thread. Highlights were how awkward the driving position was at first since the steering wheel is not in the center of the seat when driving a 510. You don't notice it with squishy stock seats but with high bolstered Recaros, you are held tight to center so it was a little odd at first. It also gave up a set of brake pads to Jeff so he could get ready for an autocross using 280zx calipers for the first time on Hey. I ordered replacements and found something quite interesting. The new Porterfield pads have a trapezoid shaped boss on the backing plate of the outside pad This boss did not fit in the round cut-out in my caliper You can see how it is preventing the pad from seating I looked in my garage for another set of 280zx calipers and found this set (painted yellow) and you can see how much bigger the opening is - plenty big to accommodate the boss. Here is another look at the caliper vs. the blue ones mounted on the car What am I looking at here? Did something change mid-model year? Is the blue set an aftermarket version? Is the blue set NOT 280ZX? For now, I put in a junk set of pads just so I could move the car but I will have to deal with this later. Quote Link to comment
carterb
I had a set of Work Equip 03 wheels w/ junk tires I got from Japan and rather than store them on the shelf, I figured I could store them on the car instead! Very happy they fit, I didn't think they would as the tire size is quite bulbous! In ya go Mr. Trouble... To the corner for now. Good boy! Quote Link to comment

Any idea what the little black tab thingie is that I have sticking out at the bottom of the pad? Edited October 20, 2020 by rosso Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Got a better picture of it? Wear indicator? Quote Link to comment
rosso
Looks like it is a manual wear sensor - not electrical and is a scratching screeching sound maker. I don't have a better picture but it is just riveted to the pad. Thx. Quote Link to comment
carterb
it's a retainer spring and is supposed to be on the inside pad, not the outside pad. Quote Link to comment

Yeh, I had such a hard time getting them together and that trapezoidal thing didn't seem to fit I knew I would need to redo it. Little did I know how badly I had really done. 😱 Quote Link to comment
carterb
Are those new/rebuilt calipers? Quick! Remove them and paint them before they turn nasty like my Rice Wagon calipers. 😢 funny, now that I see these - they have the small opening as well. There must have been a couple variations of the 280zx caliper! Edited October 21, 2020 by carterb Quote Link to comment
rosso
I cleaned up and rebuilt the calipers then used dry graphite spray lube. Good to 750F and been like this for months sitting in garage. Same for the exhaust manifolds if I can't get headers. These have been sitting for at least 6-8 months on a shelf. Left is buffed, right is as sprayed. Quote Link to comment
