Z32 stuff on a ZX strut...

Meh. It's 4AM... I'm so tired of searching. There was a thread I read a long time ago about how to put Z32 calipers on a 280zx strut with slightly larger rotors, and keeping a 4-lug bolt pattern. I can't remember if it was here, or on the realm, or back in the days of the bluebirds list.. I can't find exactly what I was remembering so it may be long gone by now.

But here's the thing. I'm currently running S12 struts. They fit and they work, but since I don't have any intentions of running fender flares, I'd like to go up to the 280zx struts... which I have a set of 280zx struts I picked up a while back when harvesting the KA swap parts I needed and such. The calipers are gone, it needs new rotors. But, since they are just sitting there and I am not running them at the moment, I was tossing the idea around about just decking the bastards out here and there so when the time comes for coilovers and all that fancy stuff, I'll already have the brake upgrade complete. If the cost isn't that much more, why not just do the brake upgrade instead of buying new 280zx rotors/calipers? I need to buy the stuff anyways, so...

This is what I want to do, but be damned if I can find the specifics.

I'd like to run Z32 calipers and rotors, but keep a 4-lug hub. I'm not 100% sure if my 15" swastika wheels will fit over this or not, but since it's in the future it's not as if the 510 will be down and by then I may find a set of wheels large enough to fit. At first glance, I should have quite a bit of room but I'm not sure on the size of the calipers since I've never taken the time to actually look at them in comparison, and I don't have the bits just yet.

Is this even possible without a mad amount of fab work? Somebody told me once that they fit just fine on ZX struts. I see it a bit here and there on other 510's, but they generally swapped over to 5-lug conversions. I don't really want to go that route.

Anybody run this set up? Is there a write-up somewhere on how to accomplish this, or is it one of those do-or-die things I am going to end up going head-first into?

I would assume Z32 calipers, Z32 rotors, and a 4-lug Z31 hub would be somewhere close to what I need to achieve this. The JY's here are dry for Nissans...

Any pics or info would be helpful, but no rush. It'll be end of the year before I get around to installing these at the earliest anyways, but I'd like to start cleaning things up and getting everything together. Oh, I also have a 7/8" master cylinder, and moving up to a 15/16" wouldn't be a problem, but would I be required to do rear disc's at the same time or could I keep the drums out back for now?

Thanks in advance.

I know that Z32 stuff bolts onto S13 everything, Not sure if S12 is that much different but as far as the 4-5lug issues an easy redrill of the rotors is all it takes. Be aware that there are 2 kinds of Z32 caliper/rotor setups 26mm+30mm

Thanks Skib - I didn't even think about searching HybridZ. I so very rarely ever go there for anything, that I totally forgot about it's existence.

While redrilling rotors would be a simple fix, I'm sure something out there will fit without doing that? I'd hate to have to go and replace a rotor somewhere only to be stuck finding a way to drill them out before I Could use them. I've seen a couple 4-luggers out there but I'm not sure what they were running.

I have S12 struts on my car right now. I wonder if I can use my hubs on the 280zx struts without issues?

I hate not actually HAVING the spare parts to fool with... and southern Oregon junkyards suck these days. Crush ALL THE CARS!!!! mentality.

Unless it's a Ford Taurus - they'll have like 20 of them fuckers stashed.

Draker, feel free to take pics of your setup.

This is what I am after.

I'd ask the Devil himself but he's banned, lol.

My key here, is that I really would like to maintain my 15" swastikas with the bigger brakes. In the end if it becomes a nightmare, I may just go with Wilwoods instead but I am dreading the cost of those. Perhaps I'll some day find a used set up somewhere for a fair and affordable price?

What are your opinions on the Arizona Z-car big brake setups?

Hmm, Z32 calipers bolt to the Z31 I do believe. Run adapters to get the Z31/Z32 caliper mounted.

Run the NA Z31 hub on the S130 strut. Only real problem with this, is you are going to not maintain the narrow track width the s130 hubs give.

I do know Z31 and S12 5 lug (no idea about 4 lug) hubs will interchange and are just about identical.

My setup is the stock setup on the Z32, but with 17's.

Looks just like this:

Z32's have very small setups for the weight of the car and under perform. I mean look at that little rotor! lol

If you need measurements let me know.

I am accually in the process of finishing this exact project up here soon. It's been a long process and I almost wish I would have went with a Wilwood setup... But it's something different and has been a good learning experience. I started by getting the center of the Z32 rotor machined and redrilled it so it would bolt to the back of the 280zx hub, same as the the 280zx rotor. The reason I did it this was instead of making it a slide on style, if that were even possible, was to space the caliber further back. This would make it a bit easier for me to still fit 15" wheels, theoretically... Then I had to figure out how to mount the caliper, I was planning on getting an adaptor made similar to how they do on the 240sx, in the end I decided to just cut off the 280zx mounts and have a bracket for the Z32 calipers cut out on a waterjet. This is where I am right now, tomarrow I am planning on welding the bracket on. I will post some pictures later on this week if you are still interested. Also because I am running a bump steer spacer the steering arm was rubbing the rotor so I took some material off the inside of these rotors, next time around I may try to take some material off the arms instead or see how they fit without the bumpsteer spacer.

DID THIS BRACKET EVER GET MADE?
