My shaft broke my asain tranny!!

Recommended Posts

So I was on my way to Idaho today to play Datto with Chet and Wide when I felt a horrible vibration and then cab started filling up with blue smoke!! :o I rolled down all windows (2) and pulled off at next exit. A horrible noise was coming from tranny while I was slowing down. I checked it out and found this

Tranny was literally falling apart, rear seal gone and aluminum chunks all over the place!. So I turned around and headed back home. At 45mph a bad vibration could be felt so I limped her home at 40 and did just fine.

Got home and in 2 hours had tranny pulled to get a better look.

dogleg from early 200sx :D .

So this will actually be a tranny swap thread. I have a 1 piece driveline that I want to use. I have done prelimanary measurements and it looks like it will need to be lengthened aboot 2-3 inches. (Thats what my wife always tells me too!!)

I am going to put dogleg in then measure to have tranny mount cut and welded back together. Then I will measure for driveline as well. If I can't get driveline done in time I may go with a 620 front half. I just really want to get rid of carrier bearing!

I will be using fork and throwout bearing and collar from the original 521 tranny.

I hope this will help some of the 521 guys that are looking to do this swap  .

I prolly won't put dogleg in untill next weekend. (Hate my job sometimes most of the time)

Mike what would one do aboot a tranny that screams in 5th and neutral, when the clutch is not pressed in.

Check the oil level. If desperate, you could fill with 140W gear oil to maybe quiet it but only until you can get it out and fixed or replaced.

Old thread res erection time.

So last May, I was ready to do the 5spd thing. Found a 620 parts truck. Was going to use the splined front half of driveline to replace my flanged 521 front half. Yeah that didn't work. Someone long ago had put a complete 521 drivetrain into said 620!!!  :o  . FUUUUUUU......So i did the 4spd thing again. However, Asain tranny swap is going to have a happy ending!! Finally got the correct shaft and me and Chet are playin trannies tomorrow       . If all goes well I will have dogleg in my 521 by tomorrow afternoon. :w00t:

AWWWWW YEAH!!!!! Finally got dogleg all buttoned up and bolted in 521!!!!! I love it!!! Already put 150 miles on it today, no problems!

1st gear is a little tall for my L16 but waaay better than the original 4spd. I gained about 10mph. Since my truck has 488s in it I now turn about 3550 at 65mph. I am very happy with that for now. Farmer Joe has a 437 set for me to throw in some nice summer evening.

Puttin it in was a little more troublesome than first thought.. Tranny is same length as shortty 4spd but is a little wider in just the wrong place so, we had to take the pressure plate off to get it up in there.

Measured the mount to have it cut down and that didn't turn out as we had planned. We got a 1/4" thick piece of angle, took the mount and ground it down another inch or so and had mount welded to angle then bolted to cross member then bolted tranny down. Was able to stay away from any cutting on the truck.

Oh yeah, and I am still running the original flange driveline! :sneaky:
