H20doctor
I heard you can use bondo to fix cracks in and on top of the dashboard...? I am going to pull my dashboard out of my 620 truck and custom paint it.... But i need to fill up some cracks first... anyone fixed a cracked dash before.??? let me know Quote Link to comment
bagged_datsun
that's what my dad does (who does interiors for a living) but we doesn't paint them after we wraps them in vinyl or even leather...the bondo holds really well to the dash pad so i guess you could paint it after..:D Quote Link to comment
]2eDeYe
A buddy of mine just refurbed a dash for me, fixed a couple cracks and repainted it. One side is deformed (from whoever removed it) so he's gonna refurb another one for me. Gonna wrap this one in suede. I'll get some picks up a bit later. Quote Link to comment
spiffinspudater
how can you tell if you have a "dash Cap"? I see those for sale every where. I figure they are going to be set on over the dash but I really have no idea? I think there is a post in nwde that pac coast(?) did. I will see if I can find it. Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
I know nothing about this but would seen to me that the bondo would be kind of hard compared to the dash padding around the crack. Wouldn't silicone be 'softer'? Quote Link to comment
]2eDeYe
Not sure what my buddy used for fill, but he said the foam & vinyl were tough to work with and the texture was hard to match. This dash was deformed as well from whoever removed it. :( I'm taking him a more cracked dash but its straight and he's gonna suede it for me :D BEFORE AFTER Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Looks better than I imagined for sure. Too bad there wasn't a 'shrink wrap' cover you just put on with a hair drier. Suede would be nice, anything but Blue fur LOL (nice electrical tape band aid! BTW) Quote Link to comment
Glengemen
It probably doesn't matter to you as you are recovering it in suede, but you can usualy get thosed strech marks out of your dash with a heat gun and form it back into place. Oh yeah, and I have one of those dash caps that I haven't put on yet, it goes right over the old one with gorilla snot. Quote Link to comment
]2eDeYe
First aid kit and electrical kit are in the same box :P You can't put a heat gun on these old datto dashes. The foam and plastic are way too brittle after 30 years ;) Quote Link to comment
H20doctor
ok... it looks like bondo is the way to go...cool... Also what type of sanding and prep work is needed to rough up the dash in order to paint it....? AND what type of rattle can paint should I use..? Krylon, thanks Quote Link to comment
bagged_datsun
the paint to use is SEM's color coat....krylon tends to chip unless you use the one made for plastic...SEM's is a bit more expensive but the way to go i think... Quote Link to comment
]2eDeYe
There's also a plastic paint adhesion promotor you can use before laying your paint. Quote Link to comment
hang_510
krylon (or rustoleum?) now makes rattle can paint specificly for plastic. havent used it myself Quote Link to comment
BEEBANI
I did a hb dash and skim coated the whole thing with nyglass (kitty hair) and sanded and bondoed that, then you don't need to worry about plastic adhesion. I put raised flames in it, and smoothed out some places. Quote Link to comment
