86 720 High Idle Problem (Carbureted)

Hey Guys. So I finally got my 720 back on the road after a year and a half. Its running like a champ with the new Z24 I put in it. Now Im having an issue with high idle speed. I believe it has something to do with the auto-choke or the choke pull-off. I sprayed it down with carb & choke cleaner but it didnt do anything. Sometimes it idles right but most of the time it idles as if the choke is not disengaged. Anyone have any suggestions for me?

Thanks In Advanced.

Look down the carb once the motor is warm. The choke plate should be vertical or fully open. If not perhaps there is no voltage to the choke heater when running.

Check the wire on the choke heater with motor running. (it's actually a Blue wire under the black covering)

If no voltage check your battery voltage when running (14v or over) as the heater relay needs alternator output to work (motor running)

Yes. The relay needs full charge voltage from the alternator to stay on and supply the heater. This relay is that way so that if the motor should stall while you are inside on a cold day having another coffee, the choke won't warm up and turn off, making the restart very difficult.

If you aren't too worried about this just jumper a wire from the idle cut solenoid (red wire) just to the right. It is only on when the key is in the on position so this works perfectly. Either way that alternator needs to be looked at.

So I realized what was happening with the high idle. I hadnt torqued down the connections on the back of the alternator thats why I wasnt getting a full charge off of it. It idles and runs perfectly now!

Thanks for the help you guys.
