been looking for a small truck and found this little gem was traded in at the vw dealer i work at. Couldn't figure out why someone would trade in a decent older vehicle like this on a new car till the first trip back to work after driving it home. The PreviOuS owner had changed the battery, alternator and in doing so grounded the power wire from the starter to the alternator. Lost lights and all electrical functions and was able to push it into the driveway at work (luckily these things are light). charge the battery and pull it up into the shop. Grabbed a flashlight and started to see the trail of melted wire. Tore it down and found the ground from the alternator up to the voltage regulator is melted. Cut out all the damaged wire and replaced the melted block to firewall ground. Have a replacement voltage regulator coming tomorrow. Just need to replace the starter to alternator charge wire and it should be back up and running.

No interior shots so far. the dash pad is cracked badly and has been taped over by the po. All the parts are there and all the switches work... dash has been cut and has an older Alpine deck. Doors have been cut for speakers (plans include new door panels and speakers removed/relocated). seat is dark green bench and in need of recover. I am currently working on a fiberglass rear decklid for my jetta coupe and once it is finished i will spend some more time fixing the datsun.

what are ur plans for the truck?

short term ...

minor mods, nothing drastic at first. I honestly plan on driving it as is for a while and getting some use out of the bed. This isn't a project vehicle for me its a utility vehicle that still puts a smile on my face. I had an old ratty 620 about 10 years ago and it was fun but was a major pos. Besides from basic maintenance, some interior work and possibly new wheels and tires i don't plan on doing much.

long term ...

who knows. it is the least practical vehicle we own but my daughter after riding in it once was doing this

maybe more power and better gearing in the future.

thanks to ray from garage autohero. I called him today about a new alternator and he suggested an alternator from a 1985 subaru 1.8l when to the auto parts store and checked it out. same bolt pattern, same T style wiring plug and internally regulated. same old belt size and was able to discard the external voltage regulator. Found the old alternator was shorting out internally after the po had hooked up the + wire to the ground terminal on the case.

some quick phone pics i took after i got home from work.

Love the truck!!!!!!mine is a darker green same white rims with a samll white wall.

I would see if you could adjust the front down a little more if you got more threads on the torsion bar bolts.

otherwise just leave it. Look good as it is. I did the whole find better rims thing but went back to stock and people like it better.

what year subaru. car and model would be nice to know on that alternator????????

on 521s the IR altnator are bigger and soemtimes they hit the idler arm.

also on 521s the alt mount used the smaller bolts. So there was not proplem there as the later IR Nissam alt use the bigger bolts that go thru the mount.Unless this is a L18/L20 block already

thanks.

block is a l16. alternator is from an 85 subaru gl 1800. part # is 15575 (Bosch w0133-1610982)

i had to use a longer bolt in the rear bolt hole due to the sliding steel insert.

you can prolly get those relipped over at rotiform dude buddy

as hot as rotiform is i would simply buy another set of used gotti's with smaller lips. Since they are only 16 bolt lips Brian and Jason would either have to have bbs lips holes welded or order the correct lips from gbs in france. Ewasier for me to wait till something pops up. this is what they looked like with skinny lips

thanks for the part#

Just to let you know if you do have this Boesch or other type of rebuild I would get a alternator batter checker to plug in the cig lighter. so you can monitor. I notice these rebuilds dont last long. get new batt cables also if you dont have them already.

get this or a close version of this. There are diaode light types also . They work and you can ck you out put with a load way before you break down. ex put lights on then your getting only 12volts then you know your not chargin

http://www.iequus.com/Product/3721/Battery-Monitor

On 521s is always best to ck out the king pins as they dont use ball joints. Its like a door hinge. Like old VWs.

ck the trans oil level. GREASE THE KINGPINS.

521 use alot of odd sizes or SAE sizes so dont think all is interchangable with a 510.

Like lugnuts a re 7/16 not same as a 510

521s use a 510 radiator hoses. ect.

order some new engine heater hoses while you can and maybe buy a spare 521 slave or 2 as most are taiwan.

master and brake master while you can. rear wheel and front wheel cylinder as spares.

new cars vs old cars is a tough one. i like having a new car in the family but i like old and simple too. I am thinking about selling my mk4 golf daily driver so i can clear some $$ for the coupe and datsun. coupe is getting a full stereo build with focal mids/sub and an old xtant amp. datsun i am trying to keep budget minded and keep it useable as a pickup to fulfill some utility. once it becomes just a driver then it becomes pointless for me to own.

Any one ever stuff rims that size under a datsun? i have bubble flares so it can stick out and look good but just want to know if any one has got some to fit?

those gotti's came off a 510 racecar from flroida. when i got them they had old weather cracked Goodyear rain track tires on them, size was 23x11.50-16 and 23x12.50-16. I have a pic of one of them mounted on my neighbors 83 corolla and it stuck out 3-4 inches or so on the back
