sedan20
i have what started off as my daily commuter, a 1995 geo metro 3 cylinder 5 spd. it didn't take long for me to decide that i wanted much more from this cookie cutter gas saver. so i have gone through great lengths in the last months to convert it into the contraption it is today, and while it approaches completion, on a daily basis i play 20 questions with strangers, and get compliments, thumbs up, and overall just start conversations, with this car. so far modifications go as follows:-Exo-Skeleton external roll cage with strategically placed structural supports-"Safari" style roof basket for carrying additional cargo-removal of every un-necessary exterior and interior panel on the car-"sway bar delete" to improve off road articulation-battery relocated to the rear for better weight disbursement-rwd "zero degree" offset 14" centerline wheels with semi aggressive tread (custom clearance had to be done to allow this rim/tire combo to work)-cutting out the rear fender wells to allow for articulation, and overall off road performance-remounting only the essential gauges onto the "crash bar"-trimming wiring harness and cleaning-up/hiding wiring inside the cab-completely custom made snorkel, made from factory air intake hard lines-2.5" cat back exhaust ran out through the body and up the side of the car with a street bike muffler-"gutted" doors and hood skin-2" lift in the front-aftermarket front racing seats (with five point seat harness holes) to replace the heavy stock ones.-custom made skid pan made from that of a jeep-custom fit tow package to help with weight distribution, and for use as a tow anchor-special attention was paid to the detail involved in the camouflage paint job-aftermarket "aggressive" steering wheel-radio and ecu relocated into a water resistant box mounted above the "crash bar" on the dash-custom water resistant turn front turn signals-Significantly larger Firestone Winter force Snow tires capable of accepting studs for extreme traction-completely modified structural support to the front end of the car in order to allow clearance for large size tiresthis vehicle has proved itself to be not only a one of a kind custom car, but also a very successful off road machine. it has been put to the test in a variety of situations ranging from rain, and driving through deep water, mud holes, dirt hills mild rock climbing, and Rally Xing, to actually catching air over off road jumps. 16 Quote Link to comment

elmerfudpucker
Could you toss the 3cyl motor and tranny in a envelope and send it to me? ;) Cool car! Quote Link to comment
Lonestar
Welcome friend and nice project ya got there. You did good with posting pic's and I got to hand it to ya, that is one of the more better modded Metro's I've seen in awhile. Hell of alot better than the guy who made a three wheeled gull door with the ass end of a 1964 ford falcon! Now while I get the fact you want to make it an AWD, why not find an old Rav4 or other small 4WD car/truck and just use the motor/drive train out of it instead of cutting out the rear sub-frame to put in another engine? I figure that would be less work and you wouldn't risk the chance of messing up the car's balance? Just a thought, still is bad ass looking car, people must give you all kinds of looks when you show up to those rally events eh? Quote Link to comment
poor-mans-720
that thing needs a body lift and 31" tires!!!!! get some hella clearance... :) Quote Link to comment
Ken_B
I used to have one of these, never thought of this! Very Cool!!! I have to ask, howd you "lift" it? Quote Link to comment
sedan20
thanks for the response guys! i LOVE starting conversations with this car... the wierdest conversation i had was with an old man that pulled up next to me at a chevron pump and asked me if i still got good gas mileage. lol... he was talking from the drivers seat of HIS four door geo. haha. @poor-mans-720 - the tires that are on it now ar 29"... yeah i know... even going 29's i still had to cut into the subframe in the front end and recess it just so i could get the wheels to spin... and ultimately turn. haha @ken_b - i cut the lower spring perch on the front struts threw an inch and a half exhaust spacer in there before RE welding it together and the back got a rubber spacer jammed under the spring.... this only did so much... i still needed clearance in the rear (the front end lost the fenders 2 days into me owning it) so i chopped as much of the material from the body as possible without leaving holes... it did the trick...no rubbing WITH 29's front or rear. @lonestar - i have had all kinds of thoughts... the whole idea about dropping a drivetrain over the rear wheels wouldnt be something in the immediate future... i enjoy beating this thing AS IS. lol. but i really like the unique nature of the three cylindar engine... im running a 3cyl/5spd setup. its light as hell.. specific to this car, and it makes you feel great when you can yell at the guy in the toyota tacoma whos stuck that he just got passed by a three cylindar. haha. the other drivetrains would be more effective, its true, but it would loose the "geo" appeal in my eyes. lol @elmerfudpucker - nope... id have to ups ground. haha @anybody reading this, id love to pick up a sponsor for the metro. im based out of central california, and have (and continue to) frequented all of the offroad parks in my area. i have a blast in this car, and have full intentions of keeping it for years, and building on its already unique nature. im open to suggestions if you all have any as well. thanks guys! http://www.facebook.com/v/1711075222187 - heres a video from my facebook of me beating it after the rally x was over. sedan20
@mikerl411 - im sure. haha. but i would loose the unique nature of the three cylindar. @poor-man - lol. yeah i've been looking at the red lifted one for a few years... its been all over the internet for a while... that guy dropped the body of a geo onto the frame of a 4x4 chevy... its a good idea, just not mine. looks damned good though Quote Link to comment

Shonuff
i see this has been marinated in awesome sauce... good why not find some stock samurai axles, rotate the motor 90deg and use one axl for the front and one for the back. bam full time awd that works on pavement and gear reduction bonus, plus still a odd lil 3banger Quote Link to comment
sedan20
^^^ true... i guess i never really thought of that... and run some straight axles like from a toyota in the front and rear to recieve the modified cv's.... hhmm..... this sounds enticing... ill chew on it. Quote Link to comment

sedan20
lol.. just stumbled across some older pictures. LINED UP NEXT TO A DATSUN 510 4DR AT THE SANTA ROSA RALLY CROSS (early 2011) the geo won 3rd place in the 2wd modified catagory (one timed lap was with my wife behind the wheel!). i dont remember what the other cars were that placed above and below me, i know that some of the other cars in my class was another geo stripped with fiberglass replacement panels, and no windows... and that four door datsun, and a late ninties corvette.... plus im sure there was others, but i cant recall what they were. Z chopper
hmmm wonder what the wheelbase difference between the metro and a tracker is Quote Link to comment
sedan20
not entirely sure. but if it makes a diffrence these wheels are 29" tall wheels... as opposed to the origional P155/80R13 tires. Quote Link to comment
bonvo
have you considered subaru drive train swap? mid 80s wagons can be had for REALLY cheap and it will get you dual range 4x4 ability and still be small enough to fit into this thing 1 Quote Link to comment
Mr.Dean_Yates
i agree, go witht he subi drive line, those rear ends are damn near indestructable as well, and btw SUPER UBER PROPS! im diggin this hard man thats bad ass 1 Quote Link to comment
sedan20
google says the geo tracker has an 86.6" wheelbase, and the geo metro has 88.4" wheelbase... good question... Quote Link to comment
Z chopper
google says the geo tracker has an 86.6" wheelbase, and the geo metro has 88.4" wheelbase... good question... close enough to maybe use tracker drive train?? and there are kits to match up the 3cyl metro engine to the tracker trans etc.. so you can keep the 3cyl goodness Quote Link to comment
