edakotaford
what year trannies will bolt up to an L-series? Quote Link to comment
ppeters914
Gee, look what I found in 2 minutes using the cool SEARCH feature: The Dogleg (FS5W63A) was only used on the following stock:'77-79 200SX (L20B) - was the standard transmission '78-79 510 (L20B) - Option on sedans, standard on Hatchbacks, not available on Wagons '80-81 510 (Z20S) Option on Sedans and Hatchbacks (wagon used a different 5-speed optional in '81) I have heard, but never verified, that it was optional on 1977 710s. It would make sense since '77 was when Nissan reintroduced factory optional 5-speeds on almost all models again after a long hiatus. There was also a dogleg-pattern 5-speed in the B210 in '77-78 (FS5W60), but it's much, much smaller. Now, go away before I taunt you further! Wheeeeeeeeeeeeee! It's Triple Abuse Thursday!!!! P.S. - anyone see the new Snoop Dogg album? There's a 510 on the cover! Quote Link to comment
edakotaford
ahhhhhh, jerrrrrrrk. i deserved that. but also, i saw just recently that a guy was using an s12 tranny on his l20b, is that possible? s12's are 83 to 87 if i'm not mistaken... Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
The '77-'79 5 spd doglegs are weak and won't take nearly as much as an FS5W71B. The FS5W71B was used on the 11/'84 to 2/'86 200sx cars. The FS5W71C was used from '86-'88 in the 200sx and the 240 sx after that. The C type is an up dated B type and much stronger. The 200sx FS5W71B only needs the front half of the case from an L series 5 speed swapped on to it to get rid of the CA bolt mounting pattern. This tranny will be 80cm long and will fit into any long tailstock vehicle like the 620. The later 200sx FS5W71C uses a larger counter shaft bearing which will have to be swapped also when you put the front case half on. Some clearance grinding will also need to be done to get it to work. The C type is about 2" longer so the drive shaft needs to be shortened BUT, this is a far superior tranny for strength and it's ability to take abuse. 300zx owners use them as a good replacement for their not so good Tremecs. Ask Jeff Hino(ichouse) for sure But I believe you swap the Bellhousings. I know the later trucks you can do this and the Napz trans and put the 77-79 or maybe Later Z car bellhousing ON. datzenmike
Yes the '80 -'83 were the same as the '84-'86 but had a Z 'bell' on them and maby different ratios. A 12mm socket and snap ring pliers are all you need to swap the the front case halves. The C type is much more involved though. The '81-'86 720 will work too but watch out, some have short tail stocks and the 4X4 does not have a speedo cog mount hole. If you are changing the front half you could always change the rear half too and use your speedo. The 4X4 trannys had a much lower fisst gear (same as the 620 early 290z)) and a wide spread between gears. The 2wd were higher geared because of the newer NAPS motors which were larger and had higher torque. Quote Link to comment
