datsunrides
This was the 520 that was recently on fleabay. Price was not bad and it was only 15 minutes from me, so I threw down a bid and won! Guy I got it from said he picked it up from Oregon a while back to flip. Well, that supposedly did not work as he said he paid $500 for it and had to get it back here. Oh well, his loss, my gain (sorta). Anyhow, I believe this is either a late 65' or early 66' based on what little I know about 520's,. and was hoping to get some insight from the knowledge base. Vin is sub 3000 if that helps any. Here are the required pics,Supposedly only the first trucks got the grill without the center badge? It's in good shape to boot!Hood badge, turn signal (all metal lever), steering wheel and door pulls a clue?No back up lights?Look, original tailgate chains! You can also see the square fender well. And the glove box knob.Truck so far has only surface rust that I can see. We'll see if that hold true when I dig deeper. And the might J13.After replacing dry rotted rad hoses, new plugs, + batt cable, and a temp fuel supply, she fired up pretty quickly and ran well considering how long she probably sat. (shot a bunch of peanut shells out the exhaust ) Another case of how hard it is to kill a Datto! I will need to drop the tank and flush it as I see there is gooey varnish sitting in the bottom. Got the brake and clutch masters working, but need to bleed the brakes and replace the slave as it is rusted pretty bad. Plan for now is to just get it in drivable shape and store it until I can get at it to restore. (Thinking maybe a CA18DE would look good in there  )Got to finish up a couple other projects first.Mark 1 Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
The last VIN for '65 was #4603 The last single headlight was Sept. '66 Clear reverse light lenses were introduced in '67. 1 Quote Link to comment
datsunrides
Good info there datzenmike. Just what I was looking for. Based on the vin info you have makes mine 65' then. Can't be too many true 65's left out there. Makes me wonder if it may be better off doing a stock resto or just keep on the original thought of a resto mod. Sad thing is it's probably more valuable (?) modded. Oh well, either way, plenty of time to contemplate. Mark 1 Quote Link to comment
DanielC
Does it have the crank you can stick in the oval hole center below the grill to start it? It looks pretty nice, actually! It is your truck, but my suggestion for your truck is to go stock. 1 Quote Link to comment
fj40dave
That's a nice looking project you have! I would mod it to whatever you want it to be! If it were mine....dependable first, then improvements along the way. 1 Quote Link to comment
datsunrides
Does it have the crank you can stick in the oval hole center below the grill to start it? I do not believe it is still with the truck. Mark 1 Quote Link to comment
dat521gatherer
Nice score. You got the uber rare glove box knob. 1 Quote Link to comment

K_trip
This was the 520 that was recently on fleabay. Price was not bad and it was only 15 minutes from me, so I threw down a bid and won! I remember seeing that truck ... but for some reason it looks much better now! Here we go folks, saving the world - one Datsun at a time. Quote Link to comment
datsunrides
The plan is to document a full frame off restoration of the truck, within reason, as I do plan on selling it upon completion. Rough overview will be full on repaint, top, bottom, and inside, frame completely stripped and repainted. All worn out parts to be replaced. Not sure about the drivetrain yet. Part of me says stay with the stock J motor, since it runs well, but the crashbox tranny sucks. I have a swap in mind but will keep it on the downlow until I actually decide if it will happen. All new interior. To update on where it currently stands since the last time, I have fully replaced the front and rear brakes, including the brake hoses and replaced a frozen clutch slave and cracked hose and got some good used tires. Made do with a newer slave as this one took the wide pattern slave that is $$$$. So it is fully driveable and got all the DMV paperwork done and have plates and a title. Fixed all the little electrical gremlins so everything works now. I have started stripping it to bare metal and it never fails to amaze me that some people just fill dents with bondo without even trying to bodywork the metal. Anyways, here is where it stands at the moment,This will take some love,Not so bad,Pretty good,Mark 1 Quote Link to comment
Z chopper
I would suggest a restomod build, the A series from the 70's looks close enough to the J series engine and has a bit more power and better trans 1 Quote Link to comment
datsunrides
Finally got around to this in earnest a few weeks ago and blew it apart for the resto and heres the proof! Sandblasted the doors, hood and cab. And in epoxy Floors had some small rust thru spots, but were still solid, strength wise so I reinforced it with fiberglass mostly to prevent water from getting in. And the floors and inner fenders undercoated with dynapro. Not too bad for a couple weekends work. (I hate sandblasting) Next up will be the bodywork on the cab and doors along with cleaning the frame and drivetrain for presh paint. Only rust of any worry is in the rockers, and it's pretty minor. datsunrides
Hi Eric. Not much progress. Been concentrating on finishing the Suzuki motorcycle and the Corolla wagon so not going to make JCCS. Everything cab foward is ready to spray, just waiting for better weather since my "booth" is outdoors! Chopper, yeah staying with the J13, albeit with a few modifications. The other pics went byebye when webshots/smile screwed the pooch. Been too busy to re-upload them to my new host. I'll get to it eventually. Oh, I decided to paint it Ford grabber blue. That should draw a little attention. Mark 1 Quote Link to comment

datsunrides
At this point, just some bolt ons. Aluminum valve cover, header and sidedraft weber (wayyyyyy overkill, but looks hella cool). May also get a cam ground for it, but we'll see how it works with the other parts.
