Cpl620
Umm, lets see. I like datsuns, im a grease monkey, and im in cali. Yeah, Thats pretty much it. I love the lines on the 620, thats why I picked if for this project over my second love of a 510 wagon. Plus a wagon seems like it would be so much harder to work on. umm so plans. Im going to be a panzy and put in a IRS out of a 240sx. No its not going to be drift status with my pants sagging and a flat billed hat. ill be useing the front linkage as well. Yes this has been done a few times but so what. I was back and forth about the engine for a long time. First I wanted to put in my boosted KA I had put together. Then I had an idea for a rotary, but now I think I settled on a small V8. ILl be using a lexus/toyota first gen 1UZ-FE. Its a 4L with 6bolt mains and has been proven for some good reliable power. So with out delay, lets get this started. The truck I started out with, and later junked. I called her the death trap. The frame was almost rusted in half and one of the front ball joints gave out when I was driving. Luckly I was going about 20mph so I only dragged the front bumper about 10 feet, hahah. Thays all for your intro. 1 Quote Link to comment
]2eDeYe
Looks like a great base to start with. Look forward to seeing progress :D 1 Quote Link to comment
Cpl620
So after I scraped that one, I picked this up. It all looks good. Rust in the usual spots like the floor boards? Tips of the doors, front hood. Nothing bad though. Has a L18 with what seems to be a non stock aluminum head. it looks a lot cleaner and new than the rest of the engine. I used it for a DD for a little bit and put for 4" blocks and wheels on it. Thats about it. 1 Quote Link to comment
Cpl620
back to the truck again. ive been working out some carb/timing issues and making sure its reliable for a daily. most of its worked out so i went looking for some inspiration to map out a direction for the truck. ill be trying to mix the styles of all of these a bit. So with that i decided that those steelies Driggers has were pretty damn sweet. though they are not what i want for the final product (i wont be able to run 6 lug anyways) they will hold me over for now while i restore the inside of the cab and everything. So a few days after i got the new truck i dropped her down a bit and gave her a bath. only 2 inch for now.Craigs list yielded a sick deal on a set of 15x10 steelies a few days ago, right after i found Driggers truck. had to pick them up and slap them on. this is how she is for the night, ill drop another 2 inch and roll the fenders tomorrow. then the internal electrical nightmare begins.got some major rolling to do.I'm thinking a two tone for the paint job (runners boards/body) google is lacking on results to find a decent example though... 1 Quote Link to comment
Cpl620
so its getting closer to the time to take this thing apart. Im getting a new daily in a week or so, and parts are getting in order.as she sits now.picked up the new heart a few weeks back...1UZ-FE.... i know... sacrilege! ill be mounting a 6speed z33 trans to it. how the hell do you get this in there? big kid super soaker time, WOOOOO! getting some new gaskets and stuff put on. just to keep her tight for another 100K 2 Quote Link to comment
Cpl620
some more inspiration, the drift caddy. though most of my inspirations are "drift" trucks. i dont plan to drift my truck. it will be a daily/AutoX until i get too many tickets.... i decided to do a little render of the final concept a while back. ill freshen it up on the computer later. this also means that ill soon have a L18 for sale with a 4speed, read end and front end parts, and the wheels will have to go too. hit me up for dibs on the stuff. 1 Quote Link to comment
Cpl620
so im pretty much taking this thing apart tonight. i got some DOM tube sitting on the rack and everything else. I'll start to grind away on the old linkage brackets tomorrow. everything you see is pretty much for sale. let me know if you want something. 1 Quote Link to comment
Cpl620
gah, only so much time in one day. ill have to start grinding away tomorrow or wait until next weekend probably. for now, its almost bare frame. pulling the bed and the cab off got me thinking since the shit was so damn heavy. maybe replace some panels with fiberglass? like the front bulkhead of the bed? maybe the floor too since im going to make it wood panel. thoughts? wtf nissan, worst idea ever.... (bed bolts) so no pics of the cab coming off (that shit was kind of sketchy...) bed is heaver than i thought too. wheels for sale...15x10 with 225x60s about 70% life left. engine out running L18 for sale now. leaks oil like a mofo, but still gets me 60+ miles a day. made a 400 mile round trip on it a few times. dual carb, not stock head? and a 4speed. ran out of time (to make a racket in the neighborhood, cant run the grinder too late) so this is how she sits for now. 2 Quote Link to comment
Farmer
I like your render. Reminds me of one of my trucks I had I still have the roll bar if interested. Larry 1 Quote Link to comment
Cpl620
that thing is sweet! and tempting, but i think im just going to fab it up as well. its actually going to be bolted to the frame to keep everything a bit more ridged. i want it a bit more low profile, and its going to connect to the strut towers that will be poking through the wheel wells for structural support. 1 Quote Link to comment
mrbigtanker
Wow you got it going on.were in Cali are you and keep the pics up. 2 Quote Link to comment

JNHEscher
UZ's scream on standalone fuel management. Keep this going, man. I have a running uz, r154 and toyotav8.com adapter sitting right behind my 620, but I have other plans. I'd love to see you get this done. Get that motor as low as you can. Theres several dry sump pan options around as well as remote oil filter flange. I hate how the stock flange sticks out in harms way. 2 Quote Link to comment
Cpl620
Thanks. I have no plans of stopping, just time constraints during the week. Its going to be a tight fit all the way around. I got a front sump UZ so it should snug in past the crossmember, but ill check out those dry sumps just in case. A remote filter is on order for sure, and I just need some new looms to wire the megasquirt up to it. Im curious what your UZ going in. 1 Quote Link to comment
JNHEscher
I had it in a '88 Toyota supra that I was helping a friend build. He gave up on it though, so I've been parting it out. I'd love to get another Tacoma to put it in but I have enough projects already. I'm still helping another friend install a 1uz in his '92 Toyota truck. I'll have to post some of that build. 1 Quote Link to comment
Cpl620
Damn, both of those would be rad. Tacoma or an old toyota pickup would be sweet. 1 Quote Link to comment

Cpl620
I didnt have a lot of time to get grinding and fitting tonight. just cut the rest of the linkage i wont be using. bent a few sawzall blades trying to cut through all that metal. at $4 a piece that kind of pissed me off.plans for tomorrow? -check to make sure the frame is straigh -grind the rest of the cut supports -notch the cross member, tack in. -brace, cut, and start fab on rear frame. 1 Quote Link to comment
Cpl620
got a late start from shipping out some items from mt KA-T part out. grinding and sanding down those brackets, then wheeling the front half of the frame took longer than i thought. wire wheeled off enough gunk to fill a 2 gal bucket.dragged all the stuff over to get some inspiration. ill be disassembling the sub frame and cross member tomorrow. notch and tack some stiff in place. hopefully i have time before i have to go watch the walking dead. 2 Quote Link to comment
Cpl620
so the grinding and fitting business takes time to get it right, who would have known? since i spent a lot of time making sure all the measurements were right on the front cross member, i didnt have a lot of time to cut and fit for the sub frame. ill also have to draw out new plans as the non KC frame is a bit more confined than the KC one i was mimicking. so on a fabrication stand point, do any of the plans bellow seem better than the other than one another? the bottom left is what i was going off of. and the rest are just ideas. other than that, a productive day, the cross member tacked in. getting ready for the subframe. 1 Quote Link to comment
Cpl620
too late to work on it, so a little future planning. i like A and C. what say you? accent color for the linkages and stuff with be a metallic purple. A B C 1 Quote Link to comment
