The Silver Bullet

I DO have a post in the 620 section.. but as it stands this is really more of a project datto, so yes I am starting a new thread!

As some of you already know, I own a rusty little beater 78 620 with a decent l20 and auto tranny in it.. i just traded my nice clean 73 Chevy Vega for my second 620...a 73 620 with a rebuilt, bored l16 running a Weber carb and 4 speed manual tranny. Interior:Good Engine:Perfect Tranny:Perfect Body:Good, with minor body filler for dents, no real rust at all! But sadly, the front brakes aren't working, it seems im getting pressure to my wheel cylinders but they aren't working, ordered new wheel cylinders and hoping that's all that is wrong with it. So far i'm pretty happy, i'll have all my extra parts up for sale soon.OICS! Featuring my brother, and his lifted danger ranger project.Resized to 86% (was 800 x 600) - Click image to enlargeIMG_0389491.jpg
Resized to 86% (was 800 x 600) - Click image to enlargeIMG_0388493.jpg
Resized to 86% (was 800 x 600) - Click image to enlargeIMG_0387492.jpg
Resized to 86% (was 800 x 600) - Click image to enlargeIMG_0386494.jpg
Resized to 86% (was 800 x 600) - Click image to enlargeIMG_0385495.jpg
Resized to 86% (was 800 x 600) - Click image to enlargeIMG_0384496.jpg I was right when it came to my brakes, ended up putting on 3 new wheel cylinders (gonna do the 4th one for the hell of it soon) All new pads and turned the drums.

Heres some basic oics of brake-ly stuff as well as me abusing my dog dishes because I don't like or want them. I have 6. I'll put them in for sale with stock rims when I get new rims.

One of my many spare parts...but this one may end up being reinstalled, since I like it better than the plastic tank that's under the hood!!

Truck looks good. Like the nickname "Silver Bullett" Perfect  Looks better now that you painted the hood trim. Now paint behind the grille black. It will fill it in & look cleaner.

Keep the parts truck. Always nice having 2 620's

The name will change when i paint it, sadly, haha, PO did a shitty job painting it, bondo to be removed and/or sanded, and I plan on painting it a brick red oxide.

White door logos, 15x10 rims and some white letter street tires.

Yeah the interior is great, the dash is just cracked, I plan on redoing all the interior lights with LEDs and turn my kick panel speakers into 5x7s and build a box to hold a 10 in shallow mount sub and two 6x8s behind the seat.

I need to go take some oics of under the hood, thats the real beauty of it, no its not some kind of awesome powerful swap, but its a fresh rebuilt l16 bored out with all kinds of quality everything, and a weber.

It makes a great DD as i collect money to do what id like to it.

Next step is probably going to be suspension wheels and tires,

then paint,

then new stereo components and LED's

Here's the under hood pics I promised- A freshly rebuilt L16, bored out to approx an l18- says PO. Weber 32/36? carb, K&N filter, accel, etc etc very nice and clean, starts and runs beautifully. Wiring looks like shit but its all done right, I will rewire it all eventually for aesthetics, but until then it works!

Sorry for low quality/Night pics.

Also- i'm 18 years old and live in a basement apartment, I share a one bay garage with the couple upstairs. Luckily for me they don't do any kind of mechanical work or have any use for the garage other than storage, so it is mostly left to me. Until I got the Datsun I didn't have much use for the garage, as my previous project/DD was in great shape (1973 Chevy Vega Notchback). Since im too broke to do anything to the truck, and since nothing minor that i can tinker on is messed up, I had nothing to do today. SO I cleaned up the garage really nice, made space, put in a stereo system, and got everything ready for Ratsun Mechanomics 101.

Sadly I cant reclaim the tool bench/ work room alongside the garage due to a bunch of shit (hoping to be able to move it to the cellar soon for moarrr room!

Fought forever today putting a new filler nozzle hose on, finding the right size, cutting it, having to scrape out the inside some, wedging it in there...it sounds and seems like it should have taken me 15minutes, but it took me almost 2 hours... i was of course, doing this in an auto parts parking lot though...oh well, no more leaks or overflow when i fill it up, so whatever, time well spent.

Get low? Get rims and tires?

Rims and tires are temporary till i paint the truck, then i'm going to white 15x10s

Torsion bar shit tomorrow, didn't have the time today.

Seems to be riding pretty good on these 3 inch blocks, the wider, better tires are probably the cause of which, it kicked like a fucking horse with the stockers and those skinny damn tires on it.

Sorry for shit pics, more to come:

So... yesterday? Maybe the day before, ive been so busy it's all melding together, I adjusted the torsion bars down.. I need to reindex them, swap bumpstops, get new shocks, eventually move my shock towers, possibly drop spindles? Idk, it rides pretty rough, but not unbearable.

Four 15x10 wagon wheels for 80 bucks...Hopefully gonna be sandblasting them and repainting them gloss white this weekend, i know a guy who knows a guy that may be able to hook me up with some decent shape used tires on the cheap....

What size tire should I run if I want a semi low pro street tire? I don't want anything super skinny, i'd like a similar sidewall size of what currently have, maybe a little less.

MANY UPDATES COMING SOON!!!!

Things ive done without oics:

New dual points distributor, cap, rotor, pertronix flamethrower 2 coil, rewiring, ordered shocks, new 8mm red plug wire set, had to order a new antidieseling valve for the 32/36.

In the near future: Painting the 15x10s, tinting the windows, getting tires, buying flares, reindexing torisions, new bumpstops, new exhaust setup, many little details and stickers and such!!!

Alright so last night We dug back into the truck, the red 8mm plug wires I ordered online were so fucking sort Myabe one of them would have reached so I have to return those, We got a radiator return tank installed and hooked up... ((no oics of that really)) and I changed my oil, 5 quarts of Mobil Super 5000 and this guy here

IMG_0674928.jpg

Which means the fram was no longer on it, so I decided to put the fram where it belongs...

IMG_0673929.jpg

Then I tackled the shocks.....Heres some front comparison and install oics:

IMG_0675927.jpg

IMG_0676926.jpg

And my rear comparison ((Look at the end bolt!!))

IMG_0678925.jpg

Now with all the wiring and such thats been happening ((new distributor, coil, plugs, antidieseling valve)) I have yet to figure out what these wires are for, they hook up to the coil... but what are they?

IMG_0680924.jpg

they go into the wrapped tape wire grouping pictured here IMG_0681923.jpg

Anyway, crappy night shot of how she sits for now, needs to be really tuned and times with new wheels and tires and flares before I put her back on the road.

why dont you get a volt meter and put the key to ON and then to start and see what happens.

early cars used a ballast resisitor and there will be a bypass wire that has 2 wires going in to a lug. so when key in START the 12volt goes direct to the coil then when key goes to ON the other wire will go to the ballast resistor then to the coil.

IM not familiar with 620 wireing but if you figure those 2 posistions START and ON.

what was wrong with the old coil and ballast.?

Whats thenew coil resisitance??????If 3 ohm coil youll bybass the ballast and go straight to the coil. so to make sure you have 12volt at Start and On

Link to comment

I have the ballast resistor hooked up and the truck is now RUNNING WELL!!!!! ((Not just because of the resistor, I already had that hooked up..)For the first time in 3 months! But I dont have these wires hooked up.. it seems in the diagram that black/red goes to... ignition?? and blue white goes to the distributor relay which im guessing is the same as the ballast resistor which I have already wired around...I fucking hate wiring...

Link to comment

Black Red looks like START power, as in, powers the coil bypassing the resistor to provide hotter spark, while starting only.

Black,Blue/White looks like negative coil. Blue/white goes to a relay, basically looks like things like the Neutral safety switch can turn it off that way.

So I decided today that the one ton 15x10 steel wheels aren't going on the truck... probably gonna be looking for some 15x8 alloys instead.

In lieu of this delay I started on another couple projects.....

This is getting painted.....

IMG_0687948.jpg

A little sneak peak....

IMG_0688949.jpg

Oh.... and I started rewiring everything under the hood for cleanliness and mostly just so I know what everything does....

IMG_0689950.jpg

More oics tomorrow, wiring and valve cover should be done, maybe I will have new rims? Maybe tires?
