Speed gear

Well just picked up my rebuilt dogleg. They didn't put the speedo gear back. No one bothered to notify me the gears on it were trashed, such a disappointment. So my question is, Is the speedo gear from my stock 4 spd the same as the one in my dogleg?

Easy fix. You just need to replace the plastic pinion gear like the ones below. (these are just for showing purposes)

The one on the left I found in a 510 4 spd. The outer housing or sleeve is identical between the 510 and the 200sx dogleg but the pinion gear is different. The 200sx pinion (BLACK) 17 tooth is 32703-N9017 less than $15. To remove the old one just punch out the roll pin on the narrow part of the neck just below the plastic cog.

The 'O' ring is 32710-14600

Mike, if all four gears fit on the same sleeve:

... which ones require a different offset sleeve? Only the 71-series transmissions?

Those are for the 620/280z/zx 5 speed and only for showing the pinion. That's a good question. More teeth means it will increase in diameter. If a larger diameter is is used, would it not be crushed against the drive gear inside????? I've asked other forums and still don't know.

Since you already have a good one for the 510, why go to the Nissan dealer to buy a different one?

One reason would be if your speedometer wasn't reading correctly before, you can adjust it with a different size gear.

Only the plastic part is destroyed and is replaceable. The 510 and the dogleg are both 17 tooth (BLACK) cogs but they are different part numbers so they could very well be different in some small not obvious way.

The correct one is 200sx pinion (BLACK) 17 tooth is 32703-N9017

It won't crush it for several sizes. The drive gear (on the output shaft) can work with a variety of different size driven gears. Same as GM, Ford, Chrysler. But once the difference gets too big they either use different drive gears or an offset position. On most of the Datsun transmissions you can't change the drive gear, it's cut into the output shaft. On the 71-series the drive gear is removable but Nissan don't seem to have but only the one.

Last time I looked at the dealer for those speedo cogs, they were unobtainium, just sayin'. I'm going to go programmable speedometer in the 510. Lot more accurate anyway. Also more expensive. <_<

and would anyone know if it would corresponde well to the FS5W71C in my 620, 3.70 rear gear, 235-45-17s? id do the math to make sure, but im unsure of the thooth count on my drive gear in my tranny, and dont know the required ratio to equal what rpms of the cable to get my speedo accurate to say 50mph.....

Just saying the 510 4 speed and the 200sx dogleg have different part numbers for the 17 tooth pinion assembly. No harm in trying it. It may work.

somebody help me!

well I just finished swapping a 280z 5 speed into my 620. Now my speedometer reads way too high. Actual speed of 45mph reads 60mph on the speedometer. I looked at the pinion gear and it's black. Which color should i get to help it be closer to my actual speed?
