does an L20B have the same oil pan as L16/18?

As far as trucks I believe the L16/18/20B pans are the same, same gasket, but for a 510 L16 the sump is in the front, trucks are in the back so different shape. The pan for the '80 720 4X4 L20B is totally different shape.

yes you're definitely correct on the 510 being different. haha

when I swapped my L18 into my 521 I couldn't figure out why it wouldn't fit and got so frustrated when I realized that it was the oil pan that wouldn't fit! so I took the pan from my parts truck's L16 and no problems!

 

I was just wondering because I have a buddy who's got a 620 and said I could have his pan for that L16 on my parts truck since I'm stripping everything good from it so I can take it to the junk yard.

Yes a 521 pan is the only one that will work in a 521.Not that its important to this thread but,using a l16 oil pan on a l20b you will have to pound it out a bit in the front to clear the front crank journal due to the longer stroke.It hits and it only needs to be pounded out like 1/4".

It depends on what vehicle the pan is going into. Unless you are doing a significant engine swap (a totally different series engine, like a KA in a '70s vehicle) the oil pan pretty much needs to come from the car/truck it is going back into. There are a couple cars that use the same pan, but most models had a pan made specific to that model. So you can't use a 521 pan on a 510, or a 620 pan in a 521, or a HLA10 (late 510) pan in a 620- they're all different. And to make it more confusing the 620 had 2 different pans- the L16/L18 one was different from the L20B one.

 

The reason is the pan was designed around the steering and suspension crossmembers. Each model was different as to the location of those.

 

So the easy answer is use the pan that came with the car when changing engines. Makes life simpler. I hadn't heard that the L16 pan was too shallow for an L20B but I wouldn't be surprised. But there is one big caveat no one has mentioned- the oil pickup tube is also designed around the oil pan- most car ones bend forward or straight to the middle whereas truck ones go to the back. You have to match that part to (they also can be swapped between the various L-series 4-bangers).

 

I did all that swapping when I put the Z24 truck engine in my wagon- used the wagon's original Z20 oil pan and pickup tube on the Z24. L-series work exactly the same.

Sorry, I'm a little fuzzy on this. I have a 1979 l20b for my 620 and I have a spare 1.8 block(unknown year) with a clean oil pan on it. Am I gonna run into problems if I want to swap the clean 1.8 oil pan onto my l20b?

 

The pans are not engine specific... they are vehicle specific. All the I4 pans can be swapped around the blocks with no issues. You run into problems when you try to put them into a vehicle it didnt come in. If that L18 came out of another 620 then the pan will be fine in your truck.
