My S12 brakes were done with this stuff. I'm not sure what is ceramic about spray paint, but whatever.

I don't know how well it will hold up, but I did everything I could to make it stick. Clean, blast, POR15 metal prep and then caliper paint in silver.

Here is how one of the rear caliper brackets came out

Some small stuff to update as I assemble the car.

One of the reasons I had the body blasted clean was the condition of the trunk area.  A previous owner decided it was a good idea to spray the whole trunk with what appeared to be undercoating.  Since it looked terrible, I knew it had to go if I was going to be happy about this car.  There was no way I was going to ever get all that stuff off and make it look like I wanted.  Here is an idea of what I was working with.

I have not updated in a very long time.  Most of my last 6 months has been spent remodeling the house in preparation for selling.  New kitchen and 3 bathrooms later, it is almost time to move the Datto to its new home.  I realized I would need to get some stuff done so it will roll safely onto the trailer so here is what I did tonight.

I acquired some new wheels on trade this winter.  A step up from the ZX 6 spokes I had in storage for sure.  Looks like they will tuck nicely in the rear even if I go reeeeeeaaaallllly low... 195/50r15

I had to add a 5mm spacer to make the rears clear the control arm.  With the stock wheel studs, spacers and disc brake rotors installed, I only had 3 threads on the lug nuts holding the wheels on.  Totally not ok!  After researching threads on the subject, I ordered some 45mm studs

Here is an idea of the stock wheel stud length

After install the lug nuts have 9 threads of engagement.  Much better!

Next step is the front.  Have to take the front hubs apart so I can use the press at work to change out the studs.  I used the lug nut and washer method at home on the rear because I had to.  The Dorman studs held up just fine.

So the front wheels rub too. I assembled my coil overs with some shaft collers because I don't have my own welder (yet). Turns out the shaft collers rub on the wheel. I will weld in the perches that came with the T3 set up after the move. You can see where the wheel contacted the coller in the pic

The S12 front hubs have the same short studs as the 280ZX units I have. Here is a comparison of all three I am dealing with. From left to right S12 front, 510 rear and new Dorman studs

I used a swinging press to remove them from the hubs (hammer). The press at work made the install really easy

On mine, I lowered the split collars to below the tire. Right about where you would mount the wheel weights. (make sure wheel weights don't hit of course)

Then raised the coil over to above the tire, to a point where it clears, just enough. I have lower profile tires, so it's not a huge gap.. but it works well. Put over 500 miles on it so far and it's fine.

Thanks Draker, that did the trick for the move at least.  No time to check if the spacers can be removed as I am packing for the move to the new house.

So here it sits on all 4 wheels for the first time since it was media blasted.  Ready to be towed to its new home.

I am regretting that I cant drive it there as I towed it home when I bought the car in the first place.  I do what I can.

Staged for the move.

This is before all my stuff was crammed into the place.  It will take a little time to sort it out, but I will have more space to work here.

I have been pondering a name for the car.  I guess I am tired of referring to it as the Datsun or the 510.  Nothing seems to fit it so I am waiting until it comes to me.  Jackie said its because it has no soul yet.  I think she is right.  I thought about "Ginger" but decided that would not be appropriate ha ha.

So it is time to update.

I have been slowly working through the list of things that come with moving into a new place. The garage is still full of stuff, but the workspace is coming together.
A set of used kitchen cabinets were "included"with the house when we moved in. They are in great shape so I installed them in the garage. The "workbench" was err special Yeah that's it. I didn't get pictures befor I tore it out, but you can tell by the corner shelf pics that it was totally unstable.  I made the mistake of climbing on the work bench to look at something in the rafters. Whoa!

As a kid, my best friends Dad would have called that a "smack job"

So now that the kid car is sold there is room in the budget for the Datsun!

Started with something that I have been putting off for a long time due to cost. Time to remove the wooden blocks from the rear control arms and replace them with this.

Thanks to Carter for letting me check out the ride in Cooper before spending on this set up

Back at it again.  Finished a bathroom remodel on the house and got my garage set up enough to work on the Datsun again.

Had to rebuild my blast cabinet to use it as it was not really functional. I added LED lights and a media separator, sealed the seams on the cabinet and poured in some new glass media.

First project for the newly functioning cabinet:  B210 brake booster

image_zpsebedsjw1.jpeg

I have 2 of these set ups so the first thing to do was the aluminum spacers.  Blasted clean and then clear coated to help prevent corrosion.  Turned out pretty nice.

image_zpsejfd7kmq.jpeg

Then the booster.  Taped up the important parts and got it cleaned up and painted.

image_zpsofmm02rm.jpeg

Then it was time for arts and crafts.  Making my own gasket for the booster to help prevent fumes in the car.  I previously bought some closed cell foam for the steering column.

One for the clutch master cylinder as well.  Picture is the old one I used as a template

Nice to see some parts installed on the car

Next up is the brake system switch.  Looks pretty haggard right now.  Cant install it looking like that.  Took it apart at work today and found the piston that does the switching is stuck.  I am soaking it overnight with some PB blaster.  We will see what it looks like tomorrow.  If I cant free it up, I will look into the Willwood unit that also includes a bias adjusting feature.

Man it is good to be working on the car again!
