Sorry dave, I thought I hit the post button B-4 bed last night, oh well.

Can't help with serial #'s but maybe we can narrow it down a bit.

Because it's in the Z section I guess it's an L 5 speed from a Z car?

280z pre 8/'78... Long Tail 3.321 2.077 1.308 1 0.864

8/78-7/79 280zx Long Tail 3.321 2.077 1.308 1 0.864

8/79-6/80 280zx Long Tail 3.062 1.858 1.308 1 0.773

7/80-6/83 280zx Long Tail 3.062 1.858 1.308 1 0.745

810/Maxima...... Long Tail 3.321 2.077 1.308 1 0.864

(I included the Maxima as it's identical to the '78/'79 280zx. It's possible that a '77-'79 truck 5 spd could have been previously swapped in also.)

EARLY: FS5W71B with top access cover plate (with 6 screws) just ahead of the shifter, on the rear housing. Looks just like the 240/280 F4W71B 4 spd.

Used on 280z and till '79 280zx. Often called the " 280z 5 spd"

OR:

LATER: FS5W71B with out cover plate on rear housing. Typical of '80-'84 280zx and 300zx. Often called the "zx 5 spd"

Perhaps, if you place in first gear and carefully measure and count the number of turns to get one output turn you could identify the transmission that way. Or an average, for example... you turn the input 30 1/2 times to get 10 output turns. Divide your 30.5 by 10 and you get 3.50, which is very close to the 3.62 first gear on the '78-'79zx but also the '80-'83zx. Well you get the idea anyway, the O/D 5th is slightly different between these two.

Looks like every Z 5-speed I've ever seen except the T5. Of course it also looks like every truck 5-speed I've seen too. Definately came OUT of a Z, as it has a 280Z or ZX type mount on it. It's not a NAPS-Z one, that's for sure (the starter mountpoint would be a lot lower).

Later ones (80-on) are usually marked on the bell "L71B" (cast into the aluminum), so that's probably a '77-79 type.

It's the first smooth one I've seen. All the truck ones I have or seen have ribs around the front half of the body and radiating up the bell. Also it has a vent tube on the top mine doesn't.

doesn't look like a Z tranny. I dont' think I've seen a Z tranny with a smooth bellhousing. Its probably a truck longtail.

Are you sure that's even a 5-speed? might be a 4-speed.

As far as I know there are no long tail 4 spds.

FS5C60L: Another dogleg, used on some late '81 510s but usually used on 210s (2 different cases, A-series and NAPS-Z). You do NOT want that tranny. Reason below.

FS5C56A: Close-ratio A-series 5-speed (used on B210s and some 210s but it is non-overdrive. I have one, if I ever get another B210 or a 1200. Or I'd trade for a L or Z series dogleg (63A). Only saving grace is it's close-ratio. It doesn't handle torque at all.

FS5C71B: Used in the 280Z, ZX, and 620 and 720 trucks. Came in both the L-series and NAPS-Z type front cases.

This is from a post by 71-521.My tranny has the .....63A..... on the side of the case. So I think I'm getting closer to I.D ing it.

63A is a dogleg. But doglegs weren't used in Zs and never had that kind of mount. Zs all had 71 series (except the T5)

But it does look like a dogleg now that I look at it closer. Which means it's the shorter tranny, which would work with a stock '73 620 manual tranny driveshaft.
