Duncan's 71 "Oz" Goon

Fellas,

Thanks for the handy tip on the front valence.   I had in off in about 30 minutes.  It's in the hot tank as we speak, and it will be easier and nicer to paint it off the car.

I finished up on the engine bay repairs and finished the paint stripping today.  Next is is de-greasing and then body work on the bay itself..

I keep running into weird shit.

The center section for the firewall is very haphazardly riveted on, then all the gaps (big ones) are filled with seam sealer.  I didn't really notice until I climbed under the car and started doing some cleanup on the underside of the tunnel.

There's an outer section (where the heater hoses pass through) and a center section (where the brake line union attaches) that is overlaid on top of that.  Both of these pieces were loose, gappy, (Is that a word?) and would flex a lot of you pulled on them.

As usual, I was busy working and didn't think of taking photos, but I spent two days scraping out seam sealer and attaching these pieces together better.  I bolted through both pieces pulling the edges together, then tacked them along the edges.

Better shot from underneath.  You can see the rivet on the left hand side, and the seam sealer filling the gap between the panels.  The hole on the lower right corner is a missing rivet.  I scraped all the seam sealer out and used some 10-32's to bolt them together.  Tack the edges together and you get a tight fit, and a much sturdier panel.  After the edges were tacked, I went back and welded up the bolt holes.

I know in that area there's a gap between two panels that is supposed to be there. It's how the cowl drains rain water. I think you may have just welded up that drain? I could be wrong...

The actual "cover" (triangle piece in the middle) is spot welded on.  The lower piece (where the heater hoses pass through) was completely sealed with seam sealer.

I will pour a little water into the center cowl opening.  I'm pretty sure it drains into the triangle piece, and water can still get out.

That design doesn't strike me as a great way to do that :)  If it does get wet, water should pass through easier now since the seam sealer is gone.  Instead of rivets, it's now tack welded every 5 inches or so.

Did a little research and I think that's exactly what you did. So, not weird. Every 510 has that same loosely attached "cover" for the cowl drain.   B)

You might want to open it back up at least a little...   ;)

After you get the drain sorted out, add some window screen on the backside of the windshield vent sheet metal to keep any future debris out of there. Since the drain is funnel shaped, it doesn't take that much to plug it,( especially leaves) , then after that it's a snow ball effect and pretty soon it's plugged solid.

I was thinking about that.  Truth is, the car will be a fair-weather-only car, and rarely washed with a hose.  My Sunny is garage parked, and I *maybe* turn a hose on it 1 or 2 times a year.

I really do appreciate the input.  This is my first 510.  I suspect I will get to know it intimately before I'm done :)

Got the (now removed) front valence all cleaned up.  Found a few spots where light was coming through, so it's going to need a few small repairs.

Also repainted my front door that turned to shit last time.  Today, the paint flowed out and went on great.  Some days you're the windshield, some days you're the bug...

Well, thanks for the kind words.  You guys are like my support group that keeps me going sometimes :)

Sometimes, life has a way of reminding us what's really important.  I spent Christmas morning in the ER and was diagnosed with Vertigo.  Even though it is kicking my ass right now, I'm at the age where it could have been much worse news.   They gave me a head CT scan, and the entire time I was thinking I might have had a brain tumor or similar that was causing all this dizziness. Believe it or not, I'm relieved that's all it is.

It comes and goes, so I am hoping on better days I might be able to get out and do some work on my doors.

Until I get better, the updates won't be coming as fast and furious as they have been on the past :o

Take care, and enjoy the holiday season!   -Mark

Baby steps...

First time out of the house since Christmas.  Took my painted door out and color sanded it.  If I focus in what is in front of me, I don't get dizzy, so I was able to get this done today.   Maybe I'll try buffing it out tomorrow.

Felt great to be out of the house for a little bit.

Try the Epley maneuver. You can do it solo, but it's ten times better with a helper. My grandfather was in and out of hospitals for a couple months before he took my wife's recommendation on this simple maneuver. He saw instant results and was 100% in a few days. My wife is a doctor, and gramps was a stubborn man to his core. But after that she earned him medical respect. The problem is rarely neurological, it is almost always the inner ear. You just need to move the little bones back into place, and/or work out any trapped air in the spirals of the inner ear.

This works buddy, get well!

I have been to 4 doctors and did try that exercise for the first week.  Apparently, that exercise doesn't help the type of Vertigo I have.  (There is a clinical name for the vertigo I have, but I can't remember what it is)  The two specialists I have seen recommended NOT doing the movement.

My treatment is no caffeine and no salt  :crying:   I'm not a salt-a-holic, but decaf everything is a bitch.

I can function around the house, and I could have had something much worse, so there is a positive side here.

Thanks again for the well wishes.

Been working a little bit here at the house.  I still have vertigo, but can function if I don't look around or look down too much.

Got a couple of doors done.  (Datsunfreak, I did an artsy Sunny reflection shot for you)
