It goes on the body under the latch for the hatchback.  The factory one is very thin.  I didn't take the latch mechanism out when I painted the hatch, so I'm not sure why it didn't work right when I put the hatch back on. The hatch lines up correctly and works fine, so I'm going with it.

Just found this photo on my phone.  Forgot I took this.

Mark,

That shim, does it go on the body or on the hatch.  Took a quick gander at mine yesterday and couldn't really tell.

I'm wondering why I just didn't fill and delete the drains and covers.  Seems like they are totally unnecessary.  Didn't they put those on the 240z for just the first year only?

On the 240Z, yes only the Series 1 models had them on the hatch. And it wasn't deleted, it was just moved to the C-pillar.

Their function is twofold. You need to allow escaping air at the rear of the vehicle for the "flow through ventilation" system to function properly. And it does help when closing the hatch rapidly for the rushing air to have somewhere to escape so it's easier to close.

Every Datsun of the 70s had these somewhere on the rear 1/3 of the car.

Ooohhh, pretty. Would almost give my left nut for a set of them corner pieces.

Are you more partial to the right one?

Let me rummage through my stuff.  I have a bit of extra roof moldings and whatnot.  When I first got the wagon, I was able to find 510 wagons in a junkyard now and then, and I pulled off a lot of those moldings off in the yard for practice.  I ended up buying the ones that came off the car that weren't damaged.  I'm not 100% sure, but I may have more of those curved pieces.  I'll take a look and see.

After learning the "double secret technique" for putting on the belt moldings, these went on fairly well.  Before picking up the technique, I spent a bit of time struggling to put these back on the car.  Was thinking it was the new rubber, turned out it was me.

Passenger side all done.  Then I went to the driver's side..

Freekin' Hell.  I have two left side trim pieces.  I did pick up some spare trim pieces along the way, but I don't remember getting extra cargo window trim.  I'm in San Diego this evening and will be home tomorrow to check. I'm really hoping I have one for the right side..

I wouldn't be surprised to find out this wagon had a two left pieces on it and I didn't take notice of it..  There's been a lot of stupid things I've run into on this thing.  (Denim iron-on floor patches, franken-tunnel, etc, etc.)

A little dark, but it's looking like a car.  Can't wait to drive it again.

After this weekend it should be done right.

I would have hoped so, but the aftermarket hatch seals are giving me trouble.  The inner seal is pretty good, but I have to slam the shit out of the hatch to get it to latch.  It just seems like it's too thick.

I also fucked up the trim piece that goes under the cargo window on the driver's side.   I can fix it and use it, but I'm on the lookout for a different one now..

It wasn't the best day at the office today...

Are you talking about the drip rail?  I have bent drip rail pieces, and I cut those into smaller pieces and make the cover for that join area.  If that's what you're talking about, I can do a couple of those easily enough.

practice makes perfect.
Got any of the finishing clips? The short piece that covers the joint.

Custom. I need at least one.

Thanks!

It just seems like it's too thick.

That's not what she said.

Barely loosen the hardware on the hatch and body and see if you can get it to latch without slamming. Maybe your shim is too thick?

Took me a few times before I got just right.

  • 2 weeks later...

Pretty much starting to button this up..

Got all fluids back in the car and started it up again.  Had to replace a leaky, rusted thermostat housing, and did the thermostat and upper radiator hose while I was there.  Heater hoses were a bit loose and leaking, too.  Could have sworn I tightened those when I had the engine out for the oil pan change..

Also got all the belt molding back on.  The cargo window ones are a raving bitch with the aftermarket cargo window rubbers.  The seals are bigger than stock (I think) and getting them on was a bugger..

Again, not too exciting but it's moving forward.

I am so glad I got NOS cargo rubbers.

The repros were already on my wagon and in really good shape, so I re-used them.  The repros are expensive. I can only imagine what the NOS seals cost.

If I could find the two hatch seals NOS, I'd probably pay it.  I've had to futz quite a bit with all the repop stuff, but the hatch seals have been the biggest pain so far.  I got so frustrated with them, I'm letting them sit for a few weeks.  I'll come back to them later with a better temperment...

That's the right approach. When I'm aggravated NOTHING seems to go right.
