Duncan's 71 "Oz" Goon

My wagon had very crappy shoulder belt attachment points on the b-pillars.  I ripped them out and installed new ones.  The top of the new piece will be held on by bolting the shoulder belt through it. (I have new three point belts for it)

I honestly can't remember how I'm attaching the bottom.  IIRC, I think the bottom may slip into the top of the lower piece.  If I have to, I can use a black anodized sheet metal screw with a black finish washer and call it good.

Haven't updated in a while, but still moving a bit on the goon.

Did a quick test fit of the fuel door.  It needs adjustment, but I just wanted to see if I could live with the whoop-de-doo in the door.  My conclusion was no, I could not.  They warped the door a bit when they welded the hinge and the catch on the backside.  I have to say that I am getting very underwhelmed with the quality of this door assembly.  I'm pretty sure I can get it adjusted out, but it leaves a lot to be desired.  I did fix the warp and the fresh paint is drying in my garage as I type this.

Got the cargo windows back in..

Found this at the Eagle Rock swap last weekend.  Had to modify it for my 5-spd trans.  I'll post how I'll finish it as I get to it.  This is after it was scrubbed for that kick ass abs plastic paint I have.  You know the part is clean when the black color has partially gone away after it was cleaned :)

After paint.  It looks MUCH better in person than in the photo.

Trying to get my dash buttoned up, but I lost my glove box latch and a dash vent.  Latch is here and vent is on the way.  Depending on delivery. I hope to get either the console or the dash mostly finished up next week.

I did read that a while back, btw.  Nice article!

I plan on doing something in the future.  For right now, I just need to keep this thing moving forward, and it was easier (and faster) locating a stock vent.  I found one locally, and it should be here tomorrow, hopefully.

If you want something a little cooler (page 8)...

I have a few of the Mustang vents on hand...

Spent all day last Saturday working on the engine bay.  It had a TON of dirt, overspray, and other crap that made it look terrible.  I got most of it off and re-buffed the paint.  Looks a whole lot better than before.  The paint in the engine bay now matches the car again.

Made an aluminum piece for the top of my console which will get covered in the same pebble-grain vinyl.  Also found a shift boot that would work with such a small space.  (Also had to cut that down a bit to make it fit)  My arts and crafts project to cover it *should* be done soon.cons_1.jpg

Started putting doors on today!  This door went on relatively easy, pretty much adjusted out fine, and actually closes with normal (non_Hercules) force.  The aftermarket rubber is a crap shoot, and the time I spent putting it on the door as best as possible seems to have paid off.

I really needed something to go well, and the door going on nicely gave me a shot of enthusiasm that was needed..  It's actually starting to look (sort of) like a car on this side :)

Only one door will fit into my little panel truck, so I will be doing one door at a time over the next few weeks.

Well this is all done.

It looks pretty good, it works okay.  The hardware isn't terribly solid, and it doesn't feel anywhere near the quality of an oem door on any car I've ever owned, but I have an idea or two on how to improve it later.  It'll do for now.  I still think the looks are a huge improvement over having a gas cap sticking out of the quarter..

I am very happy with the 68 cap but that looks way better by far.

Probably wishful thinking, but....

I'm really hoping today is the last piece that I need to paint (or paint again) on this project.

After this project is done, I'm moving everything out of my garage and repainting the floor.  I did it last on Jan 31, 1999.  I had a gig that evening, and thought I might be driving home in utter chaos due to the Y2K bug :)  seriously...

Time for more pictures.

Just for you, big man..

Slapped passenger side doors on.  They fit pretty well, but I still need to adjust the bottom in just a bit.  I may have to invoke the nuclear option to make that happen..

(Involves using a 2x4 and LOTS of force)

Console is turning out pretty nice, IMHO.  More arts and crafts.

Lots of room in front of the shifter for my coffee cup holder :)

Installed the drivers door and discovered the hinges really need new bushings.  Gonna order those from Napa tomorrow.

Did more stuff, no photos yet.

Still hitting the goon pretty hard.  Nearly every piece that goes back on the car needs some sort of repair or resto, so it's taking a bit to get through it.

Wiper assembly was semi-nasty and had a broken stud that bolts through the cowl.  Fixed it with a heli-coil insert and a m5 bolt.   It had a luxury sauna in the hot tank for a few days, and now awaiting a spot of paint and grease in all the moving parts.

The refurbished dashpad and inner cowl panels.  I had the pad done years ago after I first started on the goon.  Had it done by Just Dashes in Van Nuys.  They did a great job, but tried to raise the price on me after I confirmed with them twice and had a written order with the confirmed price for the job.  Great product, customer service sucked out loud.  I did get the piece done for the quoted price, btw.

Putting the dash back together.  It's all redone as well, and I keep remembering how badly this was spray painted in gray.  We've come a long way since then :)

Drivers side doors on, but not adjusted at all.  The striker plates aren't even on yet.  I bolted them on just to keep the painted door from getting bumped into or knocked over at the shop.  Hope to get to these soon.  And yes, Mr Big, these are the driver's side doors

I logged onto picblaze (my photo host) and they are shutting down in 4 months.  I've had one host shut down already, and there is about two years worth of pics missing in my thread.  If I find a new site, I may just have this thread shut down and post all the pics only in a new thread.   We'll see what happens, and I'm looking for a new host in the meantime..

Almost forgot.  Sometime in the middle of all the above, I rebuilt the hinges on my driver's door with new pins and bushings.  Did both upper and lower hinges.  Huge inprovement.

My Rube Goldberg setup on the press....

I signed up there last time my host failed on me.  Never got approved.  I have a new one already that has a 16mb limit.  My pics are generally 45-50k in size, so hopefully, that should do the job.  We'll see.  Thanks!

I often use datsun510.com. They were down for a few months last year (due to upgrade issues) but it's been solid overall.
