1980 720 LSD options?

Recommended Posts

I'm asking cause I don't know! Can't seem to get a straight answer and can't seem to find a forum that has a straight answer either. If you want to post up a link to one that I couldn't find sweet. I'll even give ya a plus one.

I've heard that there were some pathfinder LSDs that fit? I don't know enough about them to figure it out myself!

The Pathfinders did use a C-200 on the rare 4 cylinder engine BUT the vast majority were H-233s. Neither will fit the H-190 housing. The H-233 did come in 4.375 and 4.625 ratios with clutch LSD but are massive and larger that the Ford 9inch.

There was and OPTIONAL LSD H-190 diff offered in the early D-21 Hardbody with the Z24i or KA24E (ONLY FOUR CYLINDER) motors from '86.5 through '93. Since this isn't marked on the engine tag whether it has this option, you will have to climb under from the back and look for the orange LSD tag on the 'bum'.

Be sure to take a rag...

They are limited to 3.90, 370 and 3.545 ratios but I guess you could swap ring and pinions into them. I assume they have the standard 29 spline side gears.

There have been after market LSDs made to fit the truck H-190. Last I heard they were no longer made but they pop up on E-Bay now and then.

The old pre-Z car Roadsters had an LSD option on the H-190 but these are in high demand by racers or very well used. A worn out one can cost $1,000 to buy. The Roadster diff also has 21 spline side gears so you would have to re-spline your 620 axles.

Complete 8.8" Ford Mustang rear ends can be swapped in, maybe needing to be shortened, drilled for 6 bolt rims, driveshaft mod to fit U joint...whatever. Large range id gears, LSD and rear disc brakes. Plentiful too.

Whew, all I can remember right now...

So, I know I'm beating a dead thread here. The 4 cylinder locking h190, is it possible that I could just transplant the third member into my 620 with minimal mods? I have know idea if the axle splines would be right, and I'm thinking the driveshaft mating flange could be different.

The Ford 8.8 out of a 94-01 Explorer has an offset differential and will likely be too wide at 59 3/8" WMS to WMS, but the long axle side of the housing can be shortened by 3" to use a short side axle. This will center the diff and give you a 56 3/8" width.

That gets you to a workable axle width, w/LSD and rear disc. Ratio will likely be a 3.73, also usable.

Are you saying you have a locker for an H190?

It should bolt right in. :)
