boxboy
I have now gone through 2 Napa clutch master cylinders in less than a year. Any ideas what to do about this problem? I don't really want to spend another $60 or so on a M/C when I have just recently paid for one. What are you guys using? Is it just Chinese crap, or am I doing something wrong? Quote Link to comment
wayno
I use centric, never had an issue with that brand yet, they are new, not rebuilt. Last one cost me about $30.00 at tonys auto parts in vancouver. Quote Link to comment
boxboy
You don't happen to have a part number do you Wayno? Quote Link to comment
wayno
You don't happen to have a part number do you Wayno? You should still double check the number against a 521 clutch M/C before you use this number. I put this part in my 1966 datsun 520 project. ATTENTION, I posted the wrong photo with the wrong part number, it would have worked, but repiping would have been needed. This is the proper part number for the 520-21 application. Ranman72
i have only heard good things about centric Quote Link to comment
Dguy210
The quality, even of NAPA MC's has gone down. The last one I purchased from NAPA was bad out of the box. I bench bled it and noticed it seemed to have too much resistance to moving, upon disassembly there was obvious metal chaff in the bore and the seal was looking not so good. This was a brand new part. If I had just installed and run it, it would've worked for a while then failed. Sorry, I don't remember the brand or place of manufacture. I ended up just doing a light rebuild on the old one with some Rockauto parts. 2 Quote Link to comment

I will have to call around tomorrow and see if anyone local here carries Centric. Quote Link to comment
wayno
I don't know about the bore size, I just know it works with the slave that is on the 4 speed tranny I have in the truck at this moment, it has a J15/4 spd. tranny in it at the moment. Quote Link to comment

Napa parts have taken a dumper. I bought electrical relays from NAPA that went bad after a year. I found the following parts for your truck at ROCK Auto. DORMAN Part # CM39244 {#30610B0300, CMA39244} Bore = 5/8"; From 5/68 $34.79 BRUTE POWER Part # 39244 From 5/68 $33.79 * Non-stock item--shipping delayed up to 2 business days probably Add $10 for shipping. boxboy
So why do none of our local parts stores have these M/C's? I called everyone in my area and I have found one or two, Dorman brand cylinders. RockAuto has tons as long as you call it a 521 instead of a 520. Napa will refund my money and also has a cylinder in Ohio that they will replace it with. It is Luke brand, which I can find nothing about. I am almost inclined to get my $ back from Napa and buy a rebuild kit from RA. What do you guys advise? Quote Link to comment
wayno
I get the centric brand at "tonys auto parts" in vancouver/orchards wa. So far, that brand was the only one that I was able to buy that worked properly when I changed over to the dual type master in the diesel KC project, all the rest had issues. Quote Link to comment
boxboy
I am more than an hour south of Vancouver. I'd hate to make that drive for a part if I can get it local. Frustrating. Quote Link to comment
wayno
I just called Tonys auto parts, they are also having issues getting them now. Quote Link to comment
banzai510(hainz)
99% of them are made in Taiwan. MY Centric slave cylinder lasted 1 year after I installed a SPEC brand clutch. If I had a stock clutch Im sure it would be fine. I got new Nabcos slaves out of Rockauto now master are almost taiwan. I always BUY 2 or 3 and buy NEW. Never seen rebuilds on these anyways for 521s. also soemtimes you have to cut the threaded rod where it is at the pedal underneath. I notice soem are too long Quote Link to comment
boxboy
That is what I figured. They are probably all made the same place with the same crappy quality. I had NAPA get a new one ordered for me, but it will take over a week to get it. Mostly just because it won't cost me anything. At least NAPA is standing by their stuff. I may order a rebuild kit from RA and rebuild my Nabco as my spare for when the other one goes out again. I feel like ranting yet again about poor quality stuff. If we are so uptight about being green these days, let's build something once and build it right! Quote Link to comment
banzai510(hainz)
I wouldnt even waist my time getting a rebuild kit just buy another new one as a spare. they are cheap about 35$ the taiwan ones fail I think cause the seals/rubber not as good. The castings look fine to me. Quote Link to comment

I posted the wrong part number, it would work with some bending of the tubing, I edited my original post with the correct photo/part number. This is the correct photo/part number. Sorry about the mix up. wayno Quote Link to comment

The castings look fine to me. I am not sure where you are paying $35 for them. My parts stores all could find them for $50-60. I see them on line for $35, but with shipping it brings it up to $50 range. I have my new one on the way and I'll hope for the best. My new issues is that the fuel pump I just bought from Classic Garage worked for about 3 minutes before the diaphragm failed! NOS pump, and I double checked the part numbers several times. Now I have to figure out how to get my $$ back for that too:angry: Quote Link to comment

No one I have talked to has the Centric brand, and with the above opinions, I am not sure brand matters much. Thanks for your efforts Wayno. Quote Link to comment

I ordered two clutch master cylinders today, they are $31.something, the proper part number helped the process, as these are available, the other posted wrong part number had only one left. I have other 521 projects that need these, so I bought them now while they are around. If you have more issues boxboy, let me know and I will get one for you also. wayno Quote Link to comment
billair
Hey, I'm new the whole slave clutch thing, I bought this 67 with l18 and 5 speed, it was sitting for a while and now I have been starting it and, in the process of try to get it on the road, have been starting it occasionally and booting around the block. My question is, today I noticed the pedal is releasing / coming back really slow, does this mean my slave is toast or just needs bleeding and do you bleed it like brakes? Quote Link to comment
