bryant2482
Does it work when coasting in 5th with the clutch in???? nope not at all. before it happened i was in 5th gear and i was hearing a very very small grinding noise then put it back into 4th. i just had the tranny rebuilt in july with new bearings and seals Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Thing is the speedo drive worm gear is on the output shaft behind 5th gear. The speedo pinion cog is mounted just below and to the pass side. Forth gear transmits power straight through the tranny but other gears, specially 5th is driven by the counter shaft below it. Under load the two shafts will develop a side load and try to force each other apart. If the mainshaft lifts it will lift away from the speedo cog and if bad enough it will disengage. You say it was rebuilt so this should not be happening. Very interesting. Quote Link to comment
datsunaholic
As Mike said the only way the speedo cog can disengage is of the output shaft moves away from it. I suspect you've lost a bearing or bushing on the output shaft and the transmission will self-destruct fairly soon if you don't fix it. The grinding noise was the bearing letting go. Just because it was rebuild doesn't mean it was rebuilt correctly. Quote Link to comment

ronnny
I looked on a google search and did not find a lot of people complaining of this like the fifth gear noise/clinking problem. But i am with the others on a bearing walked out of its spot and is making the shaft back away from the the speedo gear. I think most of the time from what i read is that hapens is like mine the counter shaft the other gears than 4th are using looses a bearing on the fifth gear end and end up with a noise like mine has. It works but makes a racket like a lot of backlash or open space in the gears. You find my problem in lots of places if you search. For you that bushing or bearing on the output shaft has came out. Get your warrenty stuff done and make them start over on your time again. My tranny is supose to have 230k on it. Quote Link to comment

Skulptr
I wouldn't, if something broke, and you mess with it, that will "void" a warranty, at least thats what any half arsed tranny shop will claim, so they don't have to fix it Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
If they rebuilt it maybe best to take it back to them with your complaint. See what they do about it. I wouldn't go any further than removing the cable. (left) not the pinion (right) . Quote Link to comment

datzenmike
There is a ferule on the cable end that locks into the pinion in the transmission. The pinion is slotted and held in position by a 'key' and 10mm bolt. Quote Link to comment
