josh_t
so i have had a nice exhaust leak at the manifold flange since day 1 with this car and i finally decided to try to get somewhere with getting rid of it. seems i have made it much worse. to the point that i might as well just run an open manifold. one of the studs was missing so i put a bolt in it that is the same thread as the other 2 studs and the hole is stripped. FML. i'll just use a nut and bolt for that one. then i pull the nut off that faces the block since it is where the leak is and there is some kind of lip in the threads where obviously it stripped at the end and pushed metal up into a nice lip. so i cant get a nut on it properly. FML again. so i decide to try to temporarily hold it together with a vise grip and the plate that holds the pipe on is touching the manifold completely where the leak is and the leak is now 10x worse than b4. i was using a donut gasket off another car to attempt to seal it up even though i knew this doesnt use that type of gasket. it would still leak terribly. problem is it seems to not use a gasket at all. WTF? anybody had problems like this b4? and is there any alternative? Quote Link to comment
Nicholas7620
No I've never had that problem. They have the gasket you need at O'reilley, it's called a header collector gasket. It will cost you $5-6. You got to fix the problem, you can't be breathing that nasty exhaust :o . It gets pretty tight in there, you can reach one of the bolts from below, reaching up along the transmission. I remember tightening up one of my bolts when I changed my clutch. Happy wrenching. izzo
a couple long extensions from below will reach. I'd spray some penetrating oil on the studs/nuts if you can. It will help out. Then let them soak for a bit. They tend to like to break. Quote Link to comment
josh_t
they have all come off fine but the one hole stripped so i'll use the nut and bolt like a said b4. and i'll figure out how to clean up the spot in the threads on the one stud. i cant seem to find anything in the way of a gasket. can someone take a picture of a spare one so i know what i'm looking for. bananahamuck
The lip on the stud you describe sounds like corrosion, not sure why or how it does that but it does. When you install gasket, ( and it leaks again ), smear some ultra copper on both sides and let set up till almost rubbery before install..The ultra copper sometimes makes it smoke white for awhile but it goes away. ...And try use original type lock nuts so you don`t have to tighten as tight.. josh_t
Felpro part 25560 B/A part 0396031 uhh. i have an a series not an L. mine is a 4-1 manifold and doesnt have a flat surface like that. it leaks at the 3 bolt flange where the pipe goes up in it but its not like any other flange i have seen it doesnt seem to take a donut gasket. Nicholas7620
The gasket size will vary depending whether you have a California or Fed model. You probably have a Fed model. I can't tell from my parts catalog what size you need. The gasket doesn't look like izzo's :P , its triangular shaped like the one you have pictured. josh_t
well if its the 3 bolt gasket then i just measure the pipe size and any collector gasket of that size will fit? sorry, i'm sure its a noob question but i dont normally have problems finding gaskets like this.
