Anyone want to buy new 320 vent window rubbers?

My point in raising this topic from the dead was to point out that you could use the 3D printer to help with the mold making process. 3D print one example and test fit it. If it fits, then move on to 3D printing the mold. From there we could send the 3D printed mold (and the file) to a mold making company, like my friend in AZ, and have a mold made in aluminum. From there, having them poured is the easy part.

It sounds like Marouk (Phil Muffet) on here has been doing CAD work on the part--maybe he'd be willing to share the file?

It sounds like he has put a lot of his time and effort into that with an ends to have a commercial product. I would not feel right in asking for a file that would undercut his efforts. Just doesn't sit right with me.

I meant no disrespect to Phil. I'd be happy to pay him for a set to help him recoup some of his time.

I only mentioned it because he said he's not interested in producing in mass or trying to turn a buck. He also said he'd be happy if someone figures out the gaskets first. I'm not suggesting anyone undercut anyone else's efforts.

Unfortunately Phil Marouk has not logged in here for more than 60 days. I tried PM'ing him when he started this thread and received no reply.

I am no longer in a position to participate in  big way in the creation of these parts as I have moved on to other projects, but my buddy, the one who bought my 320, would certainly buy a set. I think Dguy210 and Matt S. said it best a few posts ago. If someone has the gumption to at least scan and build a file of a left and right vent rubber this project would be much farther down the road.

It is easy to state what another should do, but until either someone with silly money comes forward to reproduce these, the only way this will likely move forward is if an insider who is experienced with 3d printing is willing to take this on, nothing will happen.

Dguy210: I met you some time ago at Dave Pare's place when I drove my 320 up there. If you decide to take this on, PM me and I might be willing to make a token contribution to an effort to scan and print a trial set. If it works, it works. if it doesn't, then there would be no obligation or expectation at all to produce anything.

Datzenmike: Don't get too excited, we aren't talking about diving down the road that happened with king cab rubbers:) I am just offering to consider offsetting some of the material costs to 3d print a trial pair of these or to help get a good set of scans so they could be printed - should Dguy210 be interested in trying this.

The fellow Richard who left his number above appears to have at least one side in good shape that could be scanned. I have no idea if he has a set of left and right vent rubbers.

If Phil Marouk is still reading Ratsun posts, but just not logging in, please PM me. My email is in my profile.

This thread moves faster than I do, unfortunately.

Apologies for the absence. I had been off being distracted in general with work and other projects and then locked myself out the site (long story short - use the right username and email and it unlocks really easy. Use the wrong one and you'll drive yourself nuts).

No real progress on the vent rubbers. It is at a frustrating stage where I need a few hours run at it and time is pressed. Hopefully, with the slow down over Christmas, i can get the time to run off the latest mold and see how close it gets us.

Take your time, no one else is doing anything about this issue we have, over here everyone wants everything done yesterday except when they have to do it.
I looked into this way back, but the guy I talked to in Australia had a reputation for taking peoples money and then having nothing but excuses when it didn't work out, my friend said the guy had someone in Asia make some of the best reproduction rubber pieces out there, but he told me don't give the guy any money up front, but it was alright to buy the stuff he had on ebay as the parts already existed.

Wayno - I had a simple rule at my wedding that unless you are paying for it you don't get to push your opinion. Same reason why I don't take 'investment' from others on projects I am not making money on! I'm 90% certain I have dealt with your mate's mate. He is well known in other manufacturer club circles for helping to produce a part at your expense, only to have it turn up en masse at a cheaper price. Shame...as he clearly has the bandwidth and contacts to make it happen.

320 Newb - I'm a firm believer to hold the applause until the act finishes, you never know whats coming!!

I've said it before - I'm confident in getting a result, its the time it'll take given the priority of this that's in doubt!!

I suspect we are talking about the same guy, some of the best reproduction rubber parts out there, then they show up on ebay in the US for half the price.

Here is most of my post earlier in this thread(post 98) below.

I actually got a quote from a guy for 320 wingwindow molds a couple days ago, then I asked a friend of mine over in Australia about the guy, this is what I received from him, I am going to change the name of the company/person right now, I will refer to him as "THE GUY", it's not likely that I will be sending money to THE GUY to have molds made, if he is selling finished parts on ebay, I will buy them just like everyone else, but I am not paying for molds.

G'day Wayne,

Mate........................BIG story. I'll just give you the highlights. Now alot of this story has nothing to do with me.  But this guy THE GUY has around $4000 worth of stainless mouldings for my Monaro, and i will never get it back.

OK, so the story goes that this guy THE GUY was doing repro rubber parts for Japanese cars, and good quality stuff too. He was getting them done in Thailand.
Now these guys in Thailand are also doing repro stuff for other people, including car panels for U.S. cars like Camaro's etc and selling to a particular guy in the states.

The story goes, someone in the states got onto the guys in Thailand, and paid big money to make tooling for these parts. In return, they were to be the sole supplier of said parts, but.......... the guys in Thailand are dishonest, and sold some of this stuff to THE GUY "out the back door"
Shame on them for selling someone else's product,
and shame on THE GUY for doing the deal with them.
So then THE GUY says to the guys in Thailand, i want a heap of early Holden parts reproduced, how about you do them for me?  Of course the guys in Thailand say "sure, you pay for the tooling and we will do it."
So they start off small and he gets some good parts, gets them into Australia and he is the sole supplier of these parts.  More and more tooling gets made and paid for, more and more parts are coming in, THE GUY is making a killing.
So guess what happens!!!!!
Some guys in Australia go to the same back door that THE GUY went to, and THEY start buying repro Holden parts from Thailand.
So THE GUY is now on the receiving end of losing out. He gets the legal stuff happening, and that is where it is at right now.

How do i know all of this i hear you ask.....

Well, a while ago i find a HQ Holden Monaro coupe.  Has all this good stuff with it, but the body is in a panel shop, the upholstery is at the trimmers, and the stainless mouldings are at a reputable dealers place. I visit all of these places to inspect all of the items that belong to the car. So the guy that has the stainless says,"no worries, your stainless is at THE GUYS place, we just need to get it back here" It's all reconditioned ready to put on.
So i buy the car, do the rounds to pick up all of the parts for my car, but THE GUY hasn't got the stainless at his shop, he has sent them to Thailand to be used for templates.
OK, so i want my parts please i  say.  "Well, about that, he says, i can't get them for you as all of this shit is going on right now. I acknowledge you own these parts, and i am doing my best to get them back for you but i am having trouble"
These parts for the Monaro coupe are super hard to find, and a full set is generally worth $4000. And they don't come up very often.
So there is hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of stuff that people like me have unwittingly loaned out that will never get it back

So, if you are asking my opinion on you doing a deal with THE GUY????
NOT ON YOUR LIFE!!!!!!
Buying stuff from him off ebay would be fine. But trusting this guy with $3000, would be like giving a fat kid the keys to a chocolate shop.
With you being in the states, he would have no reason to honor anything for you, because you will never come to Australia to retrieve $3K.
I think you are most likely in a very hard spot, especially since you are overseas.
If i can help in any way just ask, it is no problem.

I figure only Wayne and I ever really follow this thread anymore. Just posting to let anyone foolish or stubborn enough to reproduce these items know I would still be interested in buying at least one pair of retro rubbers:) Please PM me if anything ever develops.

I've sent my bed off to paint and I'm tearing down the cab so I'm going to need to figure something out sooner than later. I've got a great local glass shop that's confident they can find something they can cut up and make work. Or worst case they glue them shut in a way that looks good.

Look at my post on Sept. 30, 2017, I mentioned that 1980s Mazda B series wingwindow gaskets can be made to work with some effort, but you need the wingwindow frame assembly from it also, you need the rear mount metal welded into your Datsun wingwindow frame assembly, I posted a couple photos of the issues.

And you don't even own a 320 anymore...

Me either.

As with many convenient things that were really handy when introduced and then disappeared over time by design evolution, 'wind wing' vent windows are something that I very much like and miss on newer cars. I've even considered trying to find a set of 'Tropical' doors for our 620 to add vent wings later. All the modern climate control systems and widgets on later model cars have eliminated the need for vent wing windows and most everybody never even gives them a thought any more on a vehicle that's not decades old. We just buy a new/late model vehicle for the 'family car' with a climate control system, crank it up or down, depending on the season, dial up the sounds and buzz on down the road.

In the Volkswagen Type I culture for decades elimination of front door wind wings with a one-piece door glass has been a big customizing fad for decades. There's even a lingo like West Coast, California, or One-Piece for the window conversions. I'd have to look it up. I have several old 'Kafers' around the place but never considered the custom one-piece windows for one of them. I'm not a big fan of one piece windows but has anyone considered a one-piece window conversion for the old Datsuns that wind wing rubbers are no linger available for ??

Just something I've been thinking of for a while. Not sure I'd want something like this on our 320. But .... ??

I admit, I am a fan of the one piece window. I converted my 1983 Toyota pickup to one piece glass by swapping on some 2wd doors. I just don't like the cluttered look of the wing window, and they obscure the side view mirror.

Interesting idea. One piece door glass on a 320...

BTW - the word "kafer" might not be so PC these days. Ever read "the power of one"?

Matt,

Did do a little reading-up on net after your post.

Thanks for the heads-up and a little self-education. Always enjoy learning new stuff. May have to check out the novel/film. Probably the film, hard for me to sit still long enough for a read.

Seems that all I could turn up on quick search, discounting UrbanDictionary, kafer generally translates to beetle or Type I Volkswagen which is what I have several of stashed away and was referring to.

BTW, love your projects and visit your site occasionally.

One-piece window in a 320 wouldn't be so difficult. Flat glass. I'd probably look at leaving the divider bar between the original up/down glass and the wing window. It'd take a little thought and planning and I'd have to take a door apart and study what is in there originally but, probably either a split divider bar or preferably something fabricated (always a last resort to cut up or otherwise destroy original vintage stuff) to replace the original bar between the wind wing and door window with an inner and outer bar with the glass between with clearance. Have to add structural support for the added front portion of channel for the one piece window to track in. Not an overly complicated project since it is a flat glass.

I messaged that Australian guy Phil Muffet a while back who was trying to make the gaskets. He had a good pair that he'd scanned then adjusted for shrinkage. He couldn't find a good product for pouring into the molds. He said his next step would be getting a quote to outsource them. I'm waiting to hear back to see if its viable.

I'm tearing my cab/engine compartment down for paint as we speak so I'm going to have to cross this bridge sooner than later. I'm kinda religious to the stock look so I'm going to keep the wing windows even if it means I have to have the local hotrod glass place glue them shut. I just want it to look good and not leak.
