datsunfreak
Toyo makes those R888 in a bunch of sizes. I was looking at them too. They have stuff in 13/14 and 15" Unfortunately, they only make two sizes in a 14", a 205/55-14 and a 225/50-14. Perfect for a 510, way too tall for a 1200. Link to comment
Lockleaf
Perhaps this is an absurd idea, but have you ever considered rims/tires from a Morris/austin mini? Pretty big aftermarket for rims and tires in 10", 12", and 13". Would require spacer/adapters as the mini lug pattern is 4x4 inch or 4x101.6mm (or something) and the tires don't seem to come wider than 170, but it was a thought that occurred to me. Here's one of the MANY sites selling those parts if you have any interest in looking. https://www.minisport.com/mini-tuning-and-styling/mini-wheels-and-tyres.html Link to comment
Lockleaf
Maybe this is an even worse idea... But golf cart style buggies also use 4x4 inch lug pattern, like the mini. And they have 12x7inch rims and DOT rated tires as large as 245/50 and 255/50. But maybe using those rims or tires is too sketchy. I was just thinking that with how light the 1200 is, and those tires being DOT rated and the rims intended to take pretty decent off-road abuse, maybe... See here for those tires etc. http://www.buggiesunlimited.com/golf-cart/255-50-12-excel-classic-dot-street-tire-(lift-required)/40279 Link to comment
datsunfreak
Pretty big aftermarket for rims and tires in 10", 12", and 13". Can't run 13s. Brakes too big. #firstworldpains Maybe this is an even worse idea... But golf cart style buggies also use 4x4 inch lug pattern, like the mini. Those would shred at 100mph+, which the car is capable of. Link to comment
Lockleaf
#sadface I never thought about speed ratings. Link to comment
datsunfreak
#sadface I greatly appreciate the suggestions, though. I'm going to give those 185/50-14s a try and see what happens. 1 Link to comment
datsunfreak
Got two different kinds of LEDs for the turn signals. Left is a pre-wired one piece light, right needed wiring added. I measured them and the left one needs a hole that is .465" and the right one needs a hole .525". So I decided to try the smaller one first... Knocked the green lenses out of the dash, and looked at the arrow shaped hole. For the smaller lights, it looks like I just need to file on the hole a wee bit, so I did... Light was a tight fit (which is a good thing), but they are in there now, and wired up... I had to lengthen the wires for the stop light switch because every time you moved the harness it unplugged itself. Fixed that, and went through and hooked up all the other wires to where they needed to go. So pending a test run of all the circuits, the dash wiring is done. Took the harness from the fuel gauge and run it through the firewall using the same grommet I used for the other gauges harnesses, ran it down the firewall and through the trans tunnel with the main battery cable, ran it up through the hole on the rear panel that housed the filler neck (same spot as the fuel pump wiring), and hooked it up to the fuel tank. I had to lengthen the harness by about four feet (thinking it was meant to run inside the car, not outside?), and I had a spare weatherproof connector from another project so I spliced it in so I can unplug the sender should I need to remove it later. Oddly, the wiring on the fuel cell had a connector on it, but it did not come with the other half of the connector... Hence being cut off and spliced. Not exactly pretty, but I have it tucked under the rear panel now where no one can see it. 2 Link to comment
datsunfreak
Finally ordered some u-joints to rebuild my drive axles, but just found out they won't be here until Monday. So I can't put them in this weekend... Will probably finish up the exhaust mounting this weekend then. 1 Link to comment
datsunfreak
Decided to stay home and work on my garage a bit, and of course the u-joints show up today... I already had a bunch of the 220-0027 u-joints (next size down), but they don't fit. Seem to only fit the main 510 driveshaft, not the half shafts. Kooky... Decided rather than use the 510 axles for this car, I'm going to use the 610 axles I had squirreled away... On a 510 there are bolt-in stub axles in the diff, then the drive axles bolt to that, then the hubs. Using the 610 drive axles eliminates one step/connection. For the 510 guys out there, these are a direct bolt-in. But you'll probably never find a set. 2 Link to comment
dimlight65
It's weird, when I read your posts about stuff at the shop, your voice in my head sounds normal. When I read posts about you working in your garage, it has that "I'm recording this in a room with lots of hard surfaces" echo... in my head. 1 Link to comment

flatcat19
The way you two banter on the internet makes me wonder what it's like in your shop. I know I text my wife when we're sitting on the couch together...is it anything like that? Only with less handjobs? More? Link to comment

datsunfreak
Decided against the 610 shafts for a multitude of reasons, so went ahead with the 510 shafts... This pair still had the original clamps on the boots... You can tell by these funky horseshoe clips that they are the original joints as well... Started on breaking them down at that point. One down, three to go... Got them all together and almost forgot these wacky zerk fittings... Scrubbed down and a coat of paint on them... And in the car they go... Last thing to do driveline-wise is to refill the trans fluid and build the rear exhaust hanger. Then it's just down to buttoning up the dash and we should be ready for a test drive... Speaking of the dash, I was going through a box of parts and found these bits I snagged from a Scion xB in the junkyard... One had a scratched up cover and the other had a broken base. Took them apart and made one good one... Thoughts? 3 Link to comment
datsunfreak
This looks simple, but I swear it took forever... Tried about 16 different ways/positions/angles to make an exhaust hanger work, with three different types of hangers, and finally settled on this... It still centers up fairly well (hard to tell in the pic)... Decent gap to the body as well... The whole thing is nice and stiff, but shouldn't vibrate. You can "bang" on the tips a bit and nothing hits either... May need a few tweaks after it's running, but I'm satisfied for now. So the current list is: Bleed brakes again Refill trans fluid Test dash circuits Pour in some gas See what happens ^_^ 5 Link to comment

TSKB310
Back when I was fresh out of high-school I worked an apprenticeship on Jaguar, Alfa Romeo, MG, Austin Healey and so on with an old guy that'd been doing it all his life, especially the old E-Type. A lot of the subtle styling they had gave them character, I think it's cool to see some of it on a Datsun. 2 Link to comment
